Actually that has been for a while now.lol.But to your why dont you live in Israel question,i don't live in Israel because it isn't that easy to do so.You cant just say "Kids we are going to live in Israel lets go".I mean they have to absorb Israel and if not it could be very nerve recking and shocking to them. Also people have family and jobs as well.I mean i will love to go to Israel and when i retire i definitely will. But now i cant do so. |

american jews want to live in america, but we support the existence of israel because when jews are persecuted, there needs to be a safe place to go. america did NOT let jews in during ww2, even when they knew what was happening. |

EDIT TO CORROSION FACTOR - Oh, that's hilarious! There was me thinking that there was a Jewish state out there, where my family and friends live, when in fact, oops silly me - it's just an 'abstract concept'!!! And I could have sworn I used to live there.... Guess I was just hallucinating. Funny how on any map there's this tiny area labelled 'Israel' then, isn't it? You truly are amusing.
As for the question: I do understand what you mean, but you could also ask: why don't all Muslim people live in an Islamic country instead of in the UK or USA? Would you consider that a valid query?
MSAFWAT - OK, fair enough. Though of course Israel is not 'exclusively' Jewish as just over 20 per cent of citizens are of other religions...!
Also, is it not valid to suggest that if there was only one Islamic country, the situation and attitude would be very different; Israel is of course the only Jewish country.
By the way Msafwat - good to have you back in this forum!
EDIT -
Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, not Tel Aviv.
MR X makes a great point about America refusing to offer sanctuary to Jews trying to flee the Nazis. |

There are also more Irish Catholics in New York City then there are in Dublin city - so what's your point (and their are more Irish in America period than there are in Ireland)? Do the Irish lose their right to their homeland because most Irish Catholics choose to live in American than they do in Ireland? Why not go to the Ireland board http://answers.yahoo.com/dir/;_ylt=Amd3yRtr8YDxOpbj0CZtXzD47BR.;_ylv=3?link=list&sid=396545529 and ask that question there as well?
I can give you and answer to that - because both Irish and Jewish Americans feel that America has been a good and healthy place for them to live unlike most other places in the world. Both Irish Catholic Americans and Jewish Americans are strong supporters of the historic homelands, but do not choose to move back.
Zoo - when I see you start picking on the Irish like you pick on Jews on issues like this - I might start to think you aren't a totally bigoted against Jews - but lets just say the focus on that topic is might help (or I will realize you hate the Irish as much as Jews - like who knew that).
BTW - you are also aware there are more Anglo-Saxons in America than there are in the UK right? What's up with that? Its like infectous or something. |

I'm able to support Israel better from here in the US than I would be living in Israel. Israel has accepted oppressed Jews from all over the world. I am obligated to support all of them in their efforts.
Personally, I wish the US would grant asylum to more people of all nationalities. It is a disgrace that we don't welcome Iraqis fleeing their war-torn country. Since Arab nations won't accept their own refugees, the west should be resettling Palestinian refugees.

Its simple, if you take the case of the Jews in Iran you will understand from what they say, i.e they feel loyal to Iran, they have many social and economical interests in other countries, so why should they want to move to Israel. Its a lot to do with economics and practicalities and the majority of Jew's are very secular and know how it feels to be oppressed so many will not go with the Zionist ideology. |

Your post has slightly xenophobic overtones - Why don't all Jews go back to Israel?, leads to why don't Asians got back to Asia.?
Until very recently there were more Jews living in New York State then the entire State of Israel. There are still more Jews in the USA than Israel.
Over 40% of the Population of Israel live on the coast with the majority in Tel Aviv-Yafo and the surrounding area. So why mention Jerusalem?
msafwat - Jerusalem is the Capital of Israel not Tel Aviv-Yafo, the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) is in Jerusalem as are most Central Government Deaprtments - can you name me another country whose Parliament isn't in its Capital City? |

First of all, there are 8 million souls in New York and 3/4 of a million in Jerusalem, so clearly this is not appropriate grounds for comparison. Statistically however, the concentration of Jews in Jerusalem is much higher than that of New York. If Jerusalem was the size of New York there would be approximately 5.5 million Jews living there, equal to the number of all the Jews living in America (more or less, depending on your criteria). According to recent statistics, Israel has surpassed America in Jewish population.
Moving to a different country isn't easy. Americans particularly are ignorant of the difficulties resulting in such a move; America is so large and so diverse that one can practically move wherever one wants without leaving the country. A New Yorker can move 3,000 miles to a different region, yet still be in the same country speaking the same language with the same political system etc. To move a different country is much different. Israel is different from America on almost every level. The social system is different, the political system is different, the climate is different, the language is different, the currency is different, the philosophies are different, the challenges are different, the job market is different etc. Many Jews dream of moving to Israel, but the actual task is daunting. And because it is so daunting, and because life in America is comfortable and easy, few attempt the transition. However, rates of American immigration to Israel are rising, and as more come and create an American social pocket, the more capable American immigrants will be of making a life there. |

Uhm, well, consider the fact that not all Jews follow the political philosophy of Zionism. I know three personally, one a coworker, who care not at all for Israel and have no intention of moving there.
All say Israel is an abstract concept, not a land. |
|

Aussie
|
It may be abstract for those living in downtown Manhatten but for those occupying Palestinian land I don't think it's an abstract concept !
I also find it iinteresting when an interviewer interviews an Israeli & the person has an American accent you could cut with a knife ! |

Its not just that there are more Jews in New York than Jews in Jerusalem (Note that east Jeruslaem is not recognized internationally as part of Israel but rather occupied Arab territories, and that also tel Aviv is the capital of Israel not Jerusalem). But overall there are more Jews in the USA (7 million) than Jews in Israel (6 million).
Edit to Tabatha: The concept of Israel as a religious state is quite unique to human History it can not just be compared to any other state in the world... while some states might be described as Islamic by definition, none will be considered "the" Islamic State for all Moslems like Israel tries to establish itself as "the" exclusive Jewish state. I find the concept behind the latter rather artificial and enforced. I think this is what was meant with "abstract concept".
Edit about Jerusalem: Declaring a city as the capital of a political entity is not enough to make it "the" recognized capital of a state. According to international law a political entity such as a State or a Capital needs three factors in order to exist, People, Territory and International Recognition. While Jerusalem has the first two it lacks international recognition. Only two states recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel those are Costa Rica and (mmm sorry I can't remember the other one right now... I'll edit this later). All other countries recognize Tel Aviv as the capital of the State of Israel and this is where all the Diplomatic Representations are.
So it doesn't really matter where you put your Government and Parliament (by the way Parliaments can be located outside the political capital examples are South Africa where the Parliament is in Cape town not in Pretoria and Bolivia where the Parliament is in Sucre not La Paz), it doesn't even matter what you unilaterally claim (It is as good as claiming New York the capital of Israel, you have the people you have the territory but no recognition... so the declaration is worthless) you can not claim occupied territory as a capital.
The fact remains that Jerusalem is not the Capital of Israel in the eyes of the entire world (or to be accurate the overwhelming majority of the world). |
