It depends where you plan to live and what type of employment you are looking to have. I would say that learning Hebrew would be of great benefit to you (many Israelis are fluent in English) and Arabic - considering the Palestinian population - certainly wouldn't hurt - but it is not as much of a priority for you - unless you go to Israel with a plan to do alot of interaction with the Palestians in places like Jerusalem.
Good Luck!!! |

Start with Hebrew and once you've masted it and you see a need for Arabic then learn Arabic. I lived in Israel for six years and never had the need or Arabic.
Good Luck! |

Official language is Hebrew.
In cities with mixed populations, the municipality must ensure that signs are written in both Hebrew and Arabic.
Looks like here, in USA.The difference is - that Israel managed to have official language and USA did not.
Do you need to learn Spanish to move to USA? Not yet. |

Most Israelis speak great English.
Learning Hebrew will be a massive help to you, though, so that you can enjoy the newspapers and TV etc. And of course it is the language of Israel.
If you find languages fairly easy and enjoyable, then it can't hurt to learn Arabic and I'm sure it is an interesting language (though which dialect would you learn? can anyone tell us please, cheers)
Many people in Israel will speak Russian, of course, as has been pointed out. I also remember hearing a lot of French when I was in certain areas too, such as Netanya. I know many French Jews have emigrated to Israel in the last few years, so French might be an enjoyable option also.
Good luck with it!
EDIT TO DAGLAS
You know full well that you've just lied.
Anyone is welcome to apply for Israeli citizenship.
Over 20 per cent of Israelis are not Jewish.
The Law Of Return states simply that ANY JEWS not ONLY JEWS may get automatic citizenship. There is clearly a big difference between the two - and you repeatedly and deliberately mis-state the situation. |

You do not NEED to learn both hebrew and arabic, because most people do speak a little english and many speak it very well. To get around you just need basic hebrew and arabic is not really needed, although it does depend on where you would live. If you're planning on living in Jerusalem, you only need basic hebrew and regular english, and you'll pick up hebrew in no time!! Trust me- I live here and am learning more and more each day just from the streets!! |

It depends in where you want to live. Good communication are important everywhere but depending on where you want to live, in an area where there are more Israelis or more Arabs, you should be able to decide which language you would learn. However, if you feel that you are very good at learning new languages you can learn both. There is a lot of over lap between Hebrew and Arabic. It shouldn't be hard for you to learn the other if you learn one.
Arabic is my first language and I am so interrested in learning Hebrew.
Good Luck |

I think most in Israel speak english, the majority english and Hebrew, and if you do happen to make some arab friends , I think they speak english as well and for fun you could learn Arab. Hebrew and Arabic are very close, it would be easy to learn both. Cheer!

hebrew is def. enough. however in some places you might not even have to learn a lot of hebrew to manage. if you're moving to yerusalim, then due to the large amount of americans there, a lot of people speak english - or at least understand a lot of it. |

Hebrew and Arabic are both official languages, although a huge chunk of the population speak English and Russian.
A working knowledge of Russian will take you really far with the Russian and Russian descended population because there is alot of them there.
However there are also alot of Palestinians people or Israeli Arabs as they are called in Israel aswell.
By speaking Arabic youw ill get through arab municipalities better and palestinian areas of the majore cities i would say.
Plus you would make more friends a person who learns Arabic such as you would be considered an act of friendiship i would say.
So learn both and you will get really far. |

Arabic is only needed if you need to talk the manual laborers. Other than that, Hebrew and English.
EDIT: Well, Arabs aren't exactly brainworkers eh? |
