Not really. There are so many women now in India, Pakistan and indonesia who wear a head gear and wear dresses that are Islamic. But not a complete veil with only the eyes seen or totally covered. This is not seen elsewhere. It seems unique to Saudi Arabia. As someone said it is a matter of one's relegion and belief. |

No, Im a Christian, but i understand the meaning of the hijab, and i think they can be very pretty. Besides the religious connotation, i think theyre make good accessories. A lot of ppl are suprised to know that the bible actual suggests several times that women cover. |

Yes it does bother me!!!
I think a few people here are missing the point, the question isn't about whether veil is right or wrong, or whether Muslim women like it but whether it should be FORCED.
I'm a Muslim woman living in the west every day I wear hijab, because I want to... and I have the freedom to dress how I wish but I wouldn't want to be forced.
I was in Iran recently and even though the legal dresscode is no different to how I usually dress, it did bother me, the fact that I couldn't take off my headscarf. I felt presurized and had I urge to rip of my hijab. which ironically subsided as soon as I left Iran, and had that option. I then felt happy again wearing my hijab.
That might sound strange but I hate feeling that I have no choice.
I love wearing my hijab and am happy to do so.. but freedom is important.
There is famous saying that 'THERE IS NO COMPULSION IN ISLAM"
Hijab is important but it means nothing if it is forced always a woman must choose for herself to dress that way.
*(I know Iran has less strict code than Saudi and only hijab is compulsory. But is same idea. I would not wear a veil. I tried once, and I hated it I couldn't breath. I wouldn't visit in a country that forces a woman to wear a veil. Covering the face is not compulsory. If a woman chooses to wear niqab (veil) that is her right, and I happy for her but there is nothing about her way of dress that makes her extra pious or Islamic than any other woman.
BTW There is no law in Saudi that says a woman must cover her face, it is just custom in some areas) |

its a matter of religion and following what God has ordained for you..
There are people of various religious beleifs all across the globe and they observe their dress code accordingly..
Catholic nuns have a strict dress code.
its a sign of modesty.. Not all muslims beleive in the face veil. this is an interpretation left up to different people of the muslim faith.. Where as in our Quran God tells the believing women to be modest and take their covers and wrap around to their bussoms. (not exact wording).. God didnt exactly say "Face" in that verse. So he left it up to us as individuals to interpret it as best we can. Some of our muslim scholars say it means cover the face, some say no, just the hair and body.. Both are correct cause God didnt specify oneway or the other.. .. These women choose to cover their face.. Some dont.. I am a Saudi muslim women and I personally dont. But if my sister here wants to. so be it..
You have to understand the arab culture.. We live by our faith, we are not like (bad example, but here anyways).. you see some christian women who will walk around with skin tight clothes, halter tops, cleavage showing to the maximum viewpoint, and you are left up to nothign as for imiagination as to what her body looks like.. and then she will show up for Church next sunday!.. It this what Jesus meant for them?.. There are modesty rules in the bible also.. So dont mock a culture that actually lives by Gods rules... |

I don't have to wear a veil; I chose to, because I am Muslim. It doesn't bother me, but people's ignorant reactions can be irritating. |

Yes. If they immigrate in a non-muslem country (which isn't politically asseted on Shari'a), they should be able to get adapted to the country they step in. Otherwise, it would be better for them to move in a muslem country (with Shari'a political asset) -if they want to leave their countryhome-. Above all, I dis-like the fact that often those are people who wants to spread Shari'a in the country they move in. It is a matter of non-respecting others. When another move to a muslem country, wears as much clothers as (he/)she can. Why a woman should wear a veil (if not even a burkini!) in a country where "political"/"religious" symbols are not well-come? (Above all: where spiritual power must be splitted from political power). (...). There are exaple of women going to swimmin-pool with a burkini: so, why do not go walking or doing something else, instead of show themselves with clothes totally un-adapted to a swimming-pool? (If one wishes to be respected, should respect ...).
[Sorry, did not understand the question! Anyway: if it was me, I would wear a veil where requested. Where not, I won't. I do not think a person, anyway, should be judged -good/bad- according to what he/she wears]. |

Mintee, for a top contributor you are very RUDE about christian ladies. If you feel free to wear your hijab or niqab (excuse my spellings), what gives you the right to suggest that Christians or non Christians are wrong in showing cleavage. We in the west live in societies where we have a choice, you too would be free to wear your religious clothing if you came here - at least it wouldn't be rammed down your throat.
I'm Christian, I wear what I want when I want to, my relationship with God isn't about clothing or fashion but it's personal (between me and God) as should be the case with any other religion. I personally don't mind people who cover and show the face its the ones who show only the eyes I do not understand, it seems like a barrier and usually you cannot speak to them (because you can't see them) and they wont speak to you. However, like I said we all have choices at least in most countries . . . |

What do you define as veil.....is it the covering of the face? Coming away from your question a bit, I am a Muslim and have always lived in England, and I cover my hair completely voluntarily. |

Nah!
I am actually happy with it! and never think of it as something stopping me for doing anything i want!
I am very comfortable with, don't care what others say! coz the last thing that gonna be with me forever is my religion! not ppl's reactions or comments about me!
oh and btw, I honestly CHOSE to wear it, no one told me to do it! I am satisfied that i started wearing it sine a pretty young age!
and anyhow! I have tons of male and female NON-Muslims that totally respect me and respect Islam! and never cared about my veil, coz the most important is the person and her personality, not what she's wearing!
I love my life and everything about it! thankfully!
and by the way, u know the thing they ut to cover their FACES! I really hate that and I never wear it! THAT is a CULTURAL thing, coz I noticed that here in Doha, Qatar, not many women wear that as Saudi Arabia! and it's not a -must-wear-it! Islam didn't say that we HAVE to wear it! but some strict families make their daughters wear it which they sure not gonna feel comfortable with something they might don't want to wear it!
so after all, yeah it depends how much u believe in god or how a good Muslim are u! and about the environment u r living in! and mine is perfect!
:) |
