You are right in that Israel is today the largest target in the world for terrorists.
Contrast this with Israel itself, which is so scrupulous about civilian life that, risking the element of surprise, it contacts enemy noncombatants in advance to warn them of approaching danger.
Hamas, which started this conflict with unrelenting rocket and mortar attacks on unarmed Israelis — 6,464 launched from Gaza in the past three years — deliberately places its weapons in and near the homes of its own people.
For Hamas, the only thing more prized than dead Jews are dead Palestinians. The religion of Jew-murder and self-martyrdom is ubiquitous. And deeply perverse, such as the Hamas TV children's program in which an adorable live-action Palestinian Mickey Mouse is beaten to death by an Israeli (then replaced by his more militant cousin, Nahoul the Bee, who vows to continue on Mickey's path to martyrdom).
At war today in Gaza, one combatant is committed to causing the most civilian pain and suffering on both sides. The other combatant is committed to saving as many lives as possible — also on both sides. It's a recurring theme. Israel gave similar warnings to Southern Lebanese villagers before attacking Hezbollah in the Lebanon war of 2006. The Israelis did this knowing it would lose for them the element of surprise and cost the lives of their own soldiers.
That is the asymmetry of means between Hamas and Israel. But there is equal clarity regarding the asymmetry of ends. Israel has but a single objective in Gaza — peace: the calm, open, normal relations it offered Gaza when it withdrew in 2005. Doing something never done by the Turkish, British, Egyptian and Jordanian rulers of Palestine, the Israelis gave the Palestinians their first sovereign territory ever in Gaza.
It was a big mistake, as the world is seeing today.

It depends on your definition of terrorism.
If terrorism means to instil fear in a population by violent activity then yes. If it means gaining a political advantage by violent means then yes.
If however terrorism means violent activity by an individual or group of individuals against the interests of the United States or it's allied states then no.
Israel as a state was born in terrorism. Google Stern Gang and Irgun for more information. Until recently the leading Israeli Government members had warrants out for their arrest for acts of terrorism. Only the fact that the elder statesmen are dead has changed this. As it is Ariel Sharon lies in his bed with his hands stained with the blood of thousands.
Of course if one classes everything critical of Israel or its policies is as palestinian propaganda or anti-semitism one will never learn anything. Propaganda is created by both sides you know.
The Israeli Government, and Hamas are both the elected representatives of their people. The "lovers of democracy" would do well to remember that.

Annet - your answer confuses me. Israeli is scrupulous about preventing loss of civilians by bombing densely populated areas? Hamas is uncaring of civilians because they are bombing lightly populated areas? Hamas has killed 4 people in 3 years, the IDF killed over 400 last night!
Phoning someone and giving them and their family 15 minutes to leave their home is not a humanitarian act, particularly if you go on to blow it to bits whether the family has left or not.

Just think- the USA kills kids (the army..), the US bomb civilian areas of the middle east, the US has WMD. America is just as bad. So are countried like Iraq and Russia and Iran and Pakistan and even India and China, the world's fastest growing third world country. No, Israel is not a terrorist state. Doing those things doesn't make you terrorist. You need to realsie these things happen all over the world, not just in the places the news shows you. They are protecting their country, they are a very religious and conflicted country. they have been at unrest for a long time. So if you think so, just look at yourself. I think it is the Americans who are the biggest threat in this world Well, i think so. Look outside the box next time, look into more of what the news doesn't filter out and tell you want to think. It is really sad that most people answering here support Israel and what they are doing to Gaza. So far, 25% of the dead in Gaza are women and children and the rockets fired from Hamas AFTER Israel started attacking Gaza. I lived in Palestine/Israel for 9 years people, and I have seen innocent people beaten to death for no reason. The Israelis are trying extremely hard to get the Palestinians out so that they are able to claim the entire country as theirs. A close friend of mine lives in Gaza, and I have learned that her 4 and 14 year old brothers were killed 2 days ago. What did they do to deserve that....I can only tear up as I write this just as I used to when I would walk home from school 5 years ago in a blanket of tear gas that Israeli soldiers fogged Palestinian roads with. All those who support what Israel is doing to those poor Palestinians, SHAME ON YOU. If Israel has a problem with Hamas, then they should arrest them and deal with them alone. I too do not follow Hamas and most of the Palestinian people don't either. But I guess you wouldn't understand that. It's like saying if a black man robbed someone then all African Americans are thieves. What about the KKK? I guess since Hamas are Palestinians and that means all Palestinian people are terrorists, then all white people must be a part of the clan....My point has been made. Have sympathy on the Palestinians who have done no harm to Israel and preach that they want nothing more than to live in peace with Israelis. |

First, a terrorist is someone who intentionally perpetrates, or causes or directs someone else to perpetrate, a violent attack against others with the intention of killing or maiming random non-combatants or destroying their property.
For the record, a person is considered "random" if they are not a specific, designated target of the attack and they are a "non-combatant" if they are not either (i) a uniformed soldier in a combat field or (ii) a terrorist.
By this definition, Hamas are clearly terrorists, and so is Abu Mazen's Fatah and PLO.
On the other hand, the IDF's targeted assassinations would never be acts of terrorism (they don't intend to kill or maim random non-combatants - only Terrorists). 'Collateral damage' casualties can never be terrorism (and that is not to say that they should not be avoided when possible).
The answer, then, is clearly that Hamas is a terrorist organization, and Israel is a sovereign state defending its citizens and making every effort to avoid civilian casualties.

No. And don't believe that propaganda...Israel doesn't kill kids...Israel WARNED the people to get out, and the Palestinian Authority would not allow the civilians to go someplace safe. They do this so that the world will believe that Israel is the villains, when, in fact, THEY are the ones murdering their own people!
They routinely allow people whose lives could be saved to lie, writhing in pain in the streets, when there are ambulances there, simply because it LOOKS like they are victims of the Israeli attacks. Again, these people could be saved and live and go back to normal lives, but they are allowed to die in great pain, simply to raise the numbers of dead.
Israel did NOT bomb kids in their homes...they bombed the homes of terrorists, and I repeat WARNED them to get their families out of the way.
Do the Palestinians WARN the Israelis when they bomb schools? Buses? Pizza parlors? Market places? Synagogues? No. They sneak in with their innocent looking children who they convince to strap bombs to themselves, because THAT isn't killing their own children, now, is it?
Get a reality check there.

I understand where you are coming from - but you need to understand that Hamas - fires rockets at israel from residential areas - it manifactures them near schools - mosques etc.
Gaza has 1.5 milion inhabitants in a 360 sqaure km area.
Because of these factors its is emensely difficult to conduct air strikes at militant postions as they are intermingled with civilian areas.
Israel does not intentionally target civilians as does its "counter-part" (they're are nothing a like really),
Do you think that firing rockets designed to maximize civilian casualties (targeted at civilians) is justifiable because of a non-violent limited economic blockade?
Without the rocket attacks there would be no economic blockade of Gaza and no Israeli air campaign. Life in Gaza would be waaay better.
Why doesn't Hamas embrace this much better life for its citizens, which would certainly not require it to give up its goal of running an independent Palestinian state?
Why dont they care about their people?

You can't call someone or a country a "terrorist" only by some actions of this country, There is a reason behind what Hamas & Israel is doing now, Dig more deep, read more, and you will answer this question yourself, This problem has been on since 1948 between israel and the Palestinians.

Israel is protecting itself from terrorists by bombing terrorists.
Hamas targets civilians and then hides behind civilians when Israel strikes back.
Israel then calls civilians on their cell phones to tell them to leave certain buildings being bombed and throws flyers that tell civilians to stay away from Hamas so that they won't get hurt.

What you have to ask yourself is why the Arabs who live in Israel (over 1 million of them) have more human rights and civil rights than any other Arabs living in the Middle East?
Why do these same Arabs refuse vehemently to leave Israel (at the haranguing of their Arab brothers in the muslim countries) and quake in their boots that something may happen that will force them to leave Israel?
Why do these same Arabs want to be able to join the IDF and fight for the survival of Israel?
Could it be that they are very, very aware that in Israel, they are leading a far better, richer, freer life than they would have in any other Middle Eastern cesspit - errr - country?
I can also 100% guarantee you that the next time some group of terrorists blows up another Western city and causes hundreds of dead and thousands of injuries to people that it won't be the Israelis doing it.
