Palestine was the name the Roamns gave Israel once they exiled the Jews from their homeland. They did this in order to obliterate the connection between the Jews and thier homeland, Israel.

The name Palestine is meant to evoke the Philistines, a non-Semitic people who inhabited the land of Israel during the time of the Greeks. The Philistines have vanished by the time the Roman Empire came into power.

There was a Jewish population in Palestine continuously. Even after the Jewish state was ended by the Romans, Jewish communities continued to exist. All of the successor governments tried to eliminate the Jews at one time or another, but none succeeded as numerous accounts testify over the centuries. When the Zionists started the modern "return" to Eretz Yisrael in the 19th Century, they were joining Jews who never left.

In 1918, a Yiddish book by David BenGurion and Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, Eretz Yisrael (Israel) in the Past and Present, was published in New York by the Poale Zion Palestine Committee. The authors note that long after the destruction of the Second Temple â€” and even after the defeat of Shimon Bar Kokhba, leader of the Jewish revolt against the Romans in the second century C.E. â€” large masses of Jews still tilled the soil of Eretz Yisrael (Israel).

Your not finding much because there's not much to find. The stolen myth is just the latest propoganda rasied by those who believe the whole middle east should be owned by Muslims - and no one else should have self-rule. The Kurds are facing the same problem.

Kismet got you started with how it came to be named Palestine -- by the Romans in 135 CE, after an ancient Aegean people (around Greece) who were the most hated enemy of the Jews. It was part of a campaign to eradicate Jewish identity altogether. Massacre as many as you can, exile the rest and change the name.

We'll leave out the middle period, a long series of successive conquering empires. Jews were resident there throughout.

The last conquering empire was the Ottoman (1299-1922). The region in question was a backwater. It didn't have many people or any organizing structure, just scattered towns and nomadic bands.

The Ottoman Empire was relatively tolerant towards Jews, but that changed when it was dismantled in 1917 for choosing the wrong side in WWI. The UK and France carved up parts of it, assigning names from old history. The Mandate of Mesopotamia (plus a bit) became Iraq, the Mandate of Syria became the Lebanon and Syria. The UK named one of their bits the Mandate of Palestine.

From the bulk of it (7/8ths), they created the state of Transjordan in 1923. They also made various conflicting promises as to the remainder.

The end of the Ottoman Empire meant rising Arab nationalism AND the end of the relative tolerance towards Jews. So it was pretty tense.

By 1947, the UK had pulled out, and it was clear that there needed to be a Jewish homeland within the Mid East, because of anti-Jewish discrimination and violence in the Mid East as well as Europe. This is an important point, because most people ignore the Jews who had been living throughout the OE for centuries.

The UN proposed a partition, creating two roughly equal states, one with a Jewish majority and one with an Arab. The Jews accepted theirs. The Arabs refused, gambled on being able to annihilate Israel and lost.

Because the Arabs refused to recognize the partition and accept Israel, they still call it Palestine. That's a political act, and a hostile one.

So the 'Palestinian' identity isn't very old. But it's a very effective political tool to undermine the state of Israel.

As for the Palestinian Arabs in Gaza, they were the ones who listened to the League of Arab Nations when it called for them to flee their homes as seven armies invaded Israel. Those who listened to Israel and remained are now full Israeli citizens.

800,000 Jews were displaced from their homes throughout the Mid East. Israel took them all in. 500,000 PAs were put into refugee camps by Egypt and Jordan. The 22 Arab nations refused to absorb them, 'lest their identity be diluted'. They've kept them there because they're effective pawns in the on-going quest to undermine and ultimately destroy Israel.

Please don't believe most of the answers that people posted for you. Most of those people can't even put together a proper sentence, as you can see.

Israel, which used to be called Palestine, absolutely belongs to the Jews, fair and square. Israel is surrounded by TWENTY TWO Arab countries, all of which want teeny tiny Israel, the ONLY Jewish homeland, wiped off the map. (And all those Arab countries rejoiced on 9-11) So they refuse to call it Israel, and insist in calling it Palestine, to this day. Palestine does not exist today, and won't be found on any textbook map.

Importantly, while there was a Palestine, there is no such thing as a "Palestinian". There is no such thing as Palestinian culture, no such thing as Palestinian history, no Palestinian language. The Arabs that call themselves "Palestinians" are no more Palestinian than the JEWS that lived there are Palestinian. It's not a real word with real meaning.
