Is egypt safe?

I know that egypt is predominately muslim and i know that quite often muslims can be quite agressive to other religions, so i was just wondering if it was safe to go there on a holiday?

I am agnostic.

Also, I know of bombings and such in Egypt. Is it safe?

I am not trying to nsult muslims or egypt, but going into a different culture is quite often difficult.

thanks

Egypt is full of very nice sweet people. Very friendly. Men are famous flirts. They also help each other so fast if someone is hurt.
As for aggressiveness: There are creeps all over ANYWHERE in the world. Not just in Islam. There are nasty Christians as well.. remember David Koresh? Undoubtedly there are lunatics who happen to be Muslim. The fact is some PEOPLE are just nuts, regardless of religion.

You will be FINE.. just be conservative in your actions here.
my travel advice to you is this:
no shorts, no kissing a boy in the street, no political talking in the street and don't jOKe too much with strangers. I would avoid discussion of religion while you are abroad except with your close personal people.

oh yea.. definitely BARGAIN at the shops! They are charging you more because you are tourist. So go ahead and haggle!
you are VERY welcome here but respect the culture and travel wisely. everything is going to be ok :)

RELAX and enjoy it.

LOL @ MIKEE & KU football... Egypt IS in Africa
and mugging is very very rare.

Dagon

I spent Christmas and New Year in Luxor doing a Nile Cruise. ALL of the Egyptions we dealt with were fantastic and incredibly friendly. I have travelled extensively across the world and have never really felt unsafe, as long as you respect the nation you are travelling too. I wore shorts but made sure that my shoulders were covered when visiting temples. Smiled and said thank you to everyone who helped me as well. I bought lots from the locals, although bartering is a definate requirement, however I was buying cotton scarves for £1!!!

In my experience the majority of every religious faith does respect the other, it is a very small minority that causes problems. When we were there all of the hotels were decorated with Christmas lights and there were Christmas trees too.

There are a huge amount of tourists of every nationality in Egypt and I felt safe everywhere I went. The only thing I learned very quickly was that if an Egyptian showed you something (even the police) they wanted paying for it, often they will come over and say 'I have something to show you' just politely say you aren't interested.

Drink only bottled water, use it to clean your teeth as well. Be careful when you eat salad as well as this can often be cleaned in the local water - which we Westerners cannot really digest too well - as it can cause stomach upsets. I have a delicate stomach and took lots of immodium but was careful with the water and had absolutely no problems.

Dependant on where you are going in Egypt as I have not been to Cairo, but I would say it is an absolutely stunning country. The temples are absolutely awe inspiring and you just stand there staring up at what the ancient Egyptians managed to do without any technology.

The last major terrorist bombing was in Sharm El Sheik about 3 or so years ago and then previous to that was in 1997.

Go and enjoy - you will like it.

Mona l
They're not aggressive.

Egyptians are either too posh to bother with discrimination, or too poor to even have time for it.

The country is rich in culture.
Just beware of the ripoffs; make sure to always make a bargain out of EVERYTHING, and show them how tight you are on your money hehe!

Otherwise, enjoy!

When I was living in Egypt i felt 10 times safer than in England! dont worry. =)

Sure it is safe and stay together with your tour wherever you go. It is just common sense.

crime rate in Egypt is very low and not like in the UK?nowhere in the world has a crime rate like us as other countries have laws of the land and Evan laws of villages and must be abide by or suffer the consequences if we had more laws like that it would be safer here too and yo will not be roaming around the place you are taken care of and told where and when as the sun is really hot and you must obey when in another countries and comply with there rules and regulations and respect the people you are visiting,Sh arm El sheik and Hurgada are man made for tourists and they give you a fab holiday but if you are going to the big city's and to see the treasures you will be escorted and not alone enjoy this wonder full history and the country take care

It's Safe Here Really Muslims Are Not Aggressive At All In Fact Egypt Has A lot of Orthodox Christians In It And We All Live in Harmony Together No Discrimination What So ever In Fact If You Look Like A Western Tourist Egyptians Will Love you All Kinds of Egyptians love All Tourists From All Around The World
I'm Muslim And I'm not Aggressive Towards Anyone I have A lot of Christian Friends And Muslim Friends It's The Media That Makes Muslims look Bad Bin laden May Have been A Terrorist And Muslim But That Doesn't Means That All Muslims Are terroists
And Bombings Happened Before In Egypt But That Was Like Years Ago

Pammie
I think you have Islamaphobia from reading junk in the press.

Where is the evidence that Egyptians are aggressive to other religions. Were you going to wear a label to say what religion you were perhaps? Of course not.

The media is to blame for so many perceptions. Learn to take what you read there with a pinch of salt.

well me being an egyptian i can tell u that if u come to egypt u r more protected than i am in egypt
police always protect foreigners here in egypt
when calling an ambulance for an egyptian sometimes ppl say foreigners are involved in the accident to get police and ambulance there quicker

Like everywhere else, it depends where you go. I have always been safe in the major tourist areas - Red Sea, Luxor etc., but as a white European, I have had police escorts to some of the more out of way places, and if you are in a small party of westerners, your guide will be reporting in to the police all the time telling them where you are, especially if you go down towards Sudan ( Abu Simbel). In the "sticks" you will see two kinds of police, one in grey uniforms (Tourist Police) and the other in black uniforms (Anti- Terrorist police). Both of which I have been assured, are well meaning - but useless.
Stay off the buses if I were you - even in Cairo.

Oh go to Egypt. You will love it. I have been a few times. I would rather walk down a lane in Sharm than i would in London. the people are so friendly. Please dont believe everything you hear about people. I have lots of Egyptian friends since going there. They go out of their way to help you, are funny, polite and very trusting. You never leave a shop without a wee gift whether you buy or not.

I have been in the Tiran Centre in Sharm lots of times, since it was bombed three years ago. i never felt unsafe.

The beaches are great the tours are interesting and fun but it is the people who you will remember the most. once they make a friend of you , then you have a friend for life.

They will make no difference to what religion you are. there are Christian Egyptians called coptics. there are churches as well as mosques there, and they live in harmony much better than in this country.

Please don't be offended by the shop keepers asking you to come into their shop. It is just their way, they mean you no harm and i always go in to be polite. Nowadays i always take little gifts for the friends i have made there and some smaller ones for anyone i meet that i get on with.

Being in Sharm there are no restrictions in what you wear. young girls wore bikinis, shorts, bra tops and sleeveless tops. maybe in the cities you should stick to skirts instead of shorts. it is only out of respect for them

i will give you an example. after swimming with dolphins in Habada...a district in Sharm.....we walked the two miles back to the hotel. we stopped in a little cafe which really just catered for the Egyptians. there was one old man serving and another having a coffee. We had two coffees and sat enjoying the rest. When we came to pay the owner of this tiny cafe gave us two bottles of water free for the rest of our walk. That is what the Egyptians are like.

KU football lover......i think you mean being robbed in some areas of the bigger cities. You can get robbed in any city in any country in the world.

safe is a relative term.

you might want to read the US State Department assessment of dangers there. see the link below.

Also the embassy in Egypt has its own page more current local data that you should check just before leaving,

Any place you go isnt 'safe' you dont know where you are, or who the people are. Stay in the city. You should be safe.
