Rather than asking for your team to win, they should rather be asking for strenght and courage to compete in a dignified manner and accept whatever the outcome is. God can not take sides and will not.

Then again it might be a numbers game..

Youve highlighted one of my biggest concern over religon: this whole prayer business.
If performing enhancing drugs are banned, then shouldnt a performing enhancing spirituality be considered the same?

If both teams pray for victory, how would God go about selecting who he listens to? Does that mean that one team is better in Gods eyes than the other? Sorry, but my idea of god is nothing so petty.

Another way of seeing the prayer dilemma is with a life threatening disaster: if youre in that situation wouldnt your thoughts run along the lines of "Please God save me!" (even if you might be a hardened atheist)? So if by whatever reason your life is maintained, would that be a reason to say "God saved me", rather than looking at the facts? What about the others who were also praying to God to save them, but died? Did God abandon them?
The answer (in my opinion) is no; it is unjustified to ask that of God, or rather, we have a warped perception of what prayer and god mean.

So why pray? Prayer is one avenue of many to come to understand the divine, to build a personal relationship. Prayer is not for requesting such petty things as victory in a sports match.

Yes you can look at it that way but it will still not stop people from praying. Praying will never be unethical to any true believer.

I think any team can pray to any God (wether they exist or not), it is the team playing the game, not some spiritual being.

The same could be asked about our Soccer teams who send Sangomas to bless the goal mouths.

I donā€™t believe that they are praying to God to help them win, rather asking God to help them do the best they can.

I think praying during sports is more of a way to focus your mind and your desires then to really think that God will help you win.
Its a boost to feel that you have a divine power by your side and if you lose well, God works in mysterious ways!

if the praying is for your team to win, then I agree with your statement and styvies' but if it's to ask for blessing for everyone, referees, spectators, technical & support staff, media and players, then there is no problem: Good question, Zim....^^(((<O>)))^^

It is not right if they only pray to GOD to assist they competitive match while in day today life they never pray to GOD to lead their way of life.
Should be in every way of their life they ask for GOD assistance no only on such a competitive match.
GOD is not only our assistance that have to answer all what we need how egoistic creature that is, GOD should be our way and our leader.

I think in light of war and desease and famine it shows great disdain for the use of prayer to use it for a sports event. It is like the women who win on game shows and shout, "OH, GOD! OH, GOD!" That's really crass.

It is right. Whoever he lets win will win; he does listen to prayers but that doesn't mean he'll answer yes to all of them.

yeah I always found that a little weird. But I think it is good to pray to God and ask him to protect everyone and that nothing would happen that would not glorify him..You know bless the teams and the audience.

God can be asked to bless your competition and you can pray for victory. This is not cheating because everyone has the opportunity to ask God for help in prayer and those that do not ask will not receive.
