Yes, Luxor is a touristic city. All foreigners go around in shorts & t-shirts, the locals are used to it. Egypt in general is not a strict islamic society as the media likes to show. Weather in Luxor is hot, so it is only normal that people walk around in shorts & t-shirts.

What isn't acceptable? well, just wear a bra and make sure your shorts are not jessica simpson hot shorts - get a pair of comfortable shoes cause you will get to walk in sandy areas.

Enjoy Luxor :)

yes u can wear what u want even if u want to waer a hot short and a bra

It's probably OK, but you may not be particularly comfortable as that is really something that many locals may find offensive. Too, you may attract unwanted attention. If you think you will be OK with that kind of scrutiny then OK,but when I was in Egypt, I was so glad I had on Capri's that hit a little below the knee, or I wore flowing linen skirts and elbow length shirts. Try the link below for some good ideas.

yeah.. i mean luxor you can wear fancy stuff.. or you can wear normal stuff.. basically everything is acceptable.. just don't turn up like all goth or mystical. but, i mean you should wear maybe a nice shirt and studded jeans or skirt.. if you want to be more comfortable. I mean it is the STRIP and you don't wanna be an outcast.. i would advise you not to.. but i mean its not gunna hurt.

No ,when you are in Egypt have respect for their religion .Dress to cover.

The short answer is, yes, but I wouldn't. Further explanation is below.

A number of tourists, male and female do walk around Luxor in shorts, t-shirts, and occasionally tank-tops. In general, it's accepted because it is a tourist area, but I consider it rather rude on the part of both men and women as, traditionally, most Muslim men and women dress modestly. Of course, what constitutes "modest" varies from culture to culture and place-to-place - in general in Egypt slacks (for men and women, as men wandering around in shorts look like they're wandering around in their underwear to some Egyptians) or longer skirts (roughly ankle length) are sufficiently modest as are t-shirts or anything with longer sleeves. Tank tops, strapless tops, excessively low cut tops, midriff-showing shirts, etc., tend to be regarded as less than modest, especially outside of the grounds of the larger resort hotels. However, I've seen nearly all of the above worn by lady tourists in Luxor. Depending on how suited they are to be wearing such a thing, they sometimes get followed by a group of young men watching them (rarely actually approaching or bothering them) or are laughed at by some of the locals (and incidentally, usually by me as well. Yes, I know it isn't nice, but some people are just laugh-worthy.)
In any case, you are a guest in their country and so you might want to try to be respectful of local sensibilities. Probably no one is going to be horribly offended and I would be amazed if anyone actually said anything to you about wearing shorts, but why not be polite when it's so simple to do so.
You may attract a bit more unwanted attention by wearing shorts, especially if you are a reasonably attractive young woman, and it will be that much more obvious that you are a tourist, but I seriously doubt that you would be the only one wearing shorts. It's really your decision.
Depending on the time of year, though, it may not be the best idea. Sunburn is a very real hazard year round, windburn can be, and if the wind is blowing and you're tramping around the archaeological sites, sand does occasionally pick up and sting a bit when hitting bare flesh. To deal with the heat and be comfortable, I suggest fairly loose fitting light-weight pants for air circulation and a shirt of similar material, so long as it isn't see-through. Good shoes are a must, especially if you plan to hike around the West Bank, and boots are a good idea if you have weak ankles and plan to do more overland hiking than sticking to the tourist paths. A hat is a good idea if you're so inclined.

Another notion to consider is that some of the hotels and restaurants do have a dress code for certain areas - the Winter Palace, for example, in their more up-scale restaurants require nice slacks/dinner suits or a dress for ladies and dinner jacket for men (I can't recall if a tie is still required). I have tramped into the very nice bar in the Old Winter Palace in (clean) dig clothes and boots and been served very politely by the staff, but the other patrons looked less than pleased by my scruffy appearance, so if that bothers you, or you want to go to any of the nicer restaurants or bars, consider taking one easily packable nice dress or pantsuit.
As I alluded to above, there seems to be different standards within the grounds of the larger resort hotels, designed to cater primarily to tourists of European or American origin. Shorts, bathing suits, etc., are acceptable as part of the resort atmosphere and the grounds are usually screened in by privacy fences or plants. The Club Med looks like a fortress, so I imagine you could run around naked in there if you wanted to, especially if you tip well. :)

Yeah u can in Luxor, but when i wore shorts in Cairo i was uncomfortable, people will stare at you. You can wear shorts but not too short. Egyptians dress casual, they wear jeans and normal clothes. It also depends on the location.

I have been there before and there are a lot of tourists and ofocurse u can wear anything u want , and ur gonna be comfortable there .

Bon Voyage

I think Luxor has always tried to impose a more upscale dress code than some of the other casino hotels on the strip, at least that's what I remember last time I was in Vegas.

So if you're in violation of the suggested dress code policy, that's what's unacceptable.

Sounds like you got a talking to.

well, as an egyptian lady, i'd advise u not 2 wear them coz men will keep staring& maybe some of them would say words that will make u feel like a 5-bucks wh#re.
Please consider that this's an islamic country & as a jealous woman, i don't like my man 2 stare at a woman who i can never wear like her in public, not coz i'm not allowed, but coz here in egypt, it gives a bad impression about u plus i'm fully covered & totally convinced :-) not brainwashed i mean.

being an egyptian myself, let me tell that it is acceptable. they know ur a tourist and it's natural for them to see that. although the locals might find it offensive because women there NEVER dress like that. i think that as long as ur comfortable, there's no prob. i mean, ur not the only 1 there dressed like that, right?

Morrelle
It's absolutely amazing how many people answered your question with out reading it well enough to understand it.........As to Luxox wear what you want ,if they don't like it TFB...but bring sunblock.

it's ok, but YOU may feel uncomfortable because most people there are mostly dressed elegant. but if you're as carefree as i am, girl, just walk in a t and shorts and sandals. just wrap a sweater around your waist as they have the AC full blass and u may get cold if you stay there too long. probably what would not be acceptable is a bathingsuit. lol

It's Las Vegas -- anything goes anywhere. Of course, this thing that the Luxor is so upscale and you'd feel bad is crazy. You will fit right in.

Dress shorts and a T-shirt with no slogans would be acceptable in the street but possibly not in some of the museums and restaurants. Try a dress shirt instead and if you are female, sorry, but you probably should consider a skirt or dress, both coming almost to the ankle. When in Rome, be a Roman. The local laws apply irregardless of who or what you are.

Sorry!, Braindead. I was thinking Luxor, Egypt. If your spending in the Casino, they probably don't care. Watch CSI for dress code tips.
