It´s no good just converting the pound to the rand. One must take the whole picture into consideration. In the UK the wages and salaries are higher than in SA. So, one could say that the earnings are adjusted to the cost of living in each of the countries. SA may be cheaper in many things, but then the wages and salaries are also lower than in the UK.

What one gains in SA in some things like food, esp fresh fruit and vegetables, one loses on security to give just one example. And likewise, as LiseK mentioned, many things are cheaper in the UK than in SA.

For a tourist coming to SA with UK earnings in his pocket, SA will be cheaper than the UK. But, a person residing in SA and earning SA rands, will find the overall burden of the cost of living is as heavy as a UK resident living and working in the UK.

The mistake many South Africans make is costing an item in Sterling then converting it into Rand and claiming South Africa is cheaper. However one must take the total picture into account for there are many things South Africans pay for that we do not pay for in the UK e.g. Education,Healthcare,Security etc. One also has to take into account the advanced infrastructure of the UK compared to that of South Africa and the quality of goods etc.
All in all I would say it is approximately the same.

You must also remember that before they screwed up the value of the Rand it was R1.70 = £1.00 so instead of multipying by 14 try 1.7 and then see how cheap UK is.
My daughter lives in Cape Town and I have to top up her earnings from here every month.
As Alf said school fees are free here whilst she pays a fortune. My grandson has athsma and alergies and is often ill and in hospital and even having med aid it is still expensive as they do not pay everything.
He came here last year in June and got ill.
My daughter could not believe that even though he was on holiday and did not belong here he paid nothing.

probably yes.

But... at what cost would put your life??
How many times have you been carjacked at traffic lights, do you have to have a gun under your pillow ready for when they break in, have you ever been stabbed for your mobile phone?

Wel-come to Sarf Afrika my frend!

M.C.
No, I do not think so, somethings might seem expensive to a SA when visiting the UK, because of the poor rand, however if you lived and owed a living in the UK, the answer is NO...

If you're earning pounds and buying in Rands.

If not, No, in fact things may cost you an arm and a leg or your neck.

Snorkie
Yes ......a lot cheaper to live here in SA. But I did find toys and clothing to be cheaper there in the UK. But that is about all. Food is extremely expensive in England as well as petrol, houses, alcohol, dining out etc.

A lot cheaper than Britain.Capuchino is about 6 Rands and you'll get around 12 Rands to a pound. That makes it about 50p,for what we pay £1.40 or more,so we do well from the exchange rate. Meals likewise are cheap, and the beef and lamb are first rate. I had no problems there for a month's holiday and found better service in the shops, and manners on the street than I'm used to in Britain. There are some dodgy areas though,so take normal precautions. I ,met dozens of single girls from Ireland, England, America, Spain, Denmark, etc, and not a single bad-luck story from any of them.I stayed in backpacker hostels, guest houses and hotels and all of them were very friendly and very pleasant. However, all the 'rich' places have steel fences round and security locks. The staff in the airport were all wearing Father Christmas outfits in 80 degees heat. Seemed a bit daft to me,but they were enjoying themselves.Love to go back.

It is cheaper, but also a lot more dangerous. You are a lot more likely to be mugged there than here.

Turnation is right

It depends which currency you are earning - if you are earning pounds and shopping in rands in SA then yes you can get more for your money.

But if you take rands and pounds in each country and compare one for one then you come out about even actually.

i'm guessing its either cheaper or better in england than over there as that would explain why there are so many of them

Well i'm actually in london and i can say that renting is definitely higher.
The foodstuffs sux here, they have no creativity for spices, ppl r fatter here in every corner they sell fried chicken n fries.
architecture isnt grand and u cud hardly find a tree. well th ppl aint bad though as does the infrastructure. the red buses are nice.
travel is good.
