Yes. Shavuot is celebrated as the day we received the Torah, while Simchat Torah was chosen as a day by the Rabbinic authority to finish the annual cycle of the Torah reading. A Torah cycle used to take 7 years to complete, but that was changed to 1 year later on, and a day was chosen to celebrate the 'siyum'. Besides for that they are both days for celebrating the Torah. |

Yes. On Shavuot we are celebrating completion of our first fruit offerings. In the old days, the rest of the harvest would belong to us. So we celebrate the blessings that come from Torah during Shavuot while on Simcha Torah, we celebrate the Torah itself. Shavout is a Spring holiday and Simcha Torah is a fall festival where we finish reading Torah and roll the scroll back to read from the beginning again. This is why we dance with the Torah on Simcha Torah. |

On Shavuot we study the Torah, and on Simchat Torah we dance with the Torah. One is mental, the other is physical. |

You know, we were debating this question at the simchat torah meal. So it's cute you mention it (but that's just by the way).
My thoughts are as following: On Shavuot we got the torah. It was given to us from above and all we had to do was accept it.
But Simchat Torah signifies our toil and our hard work and what we accomplished on our own, learning the Torah and finishing another cycle.
Also what happened on Shavuot was a one-time occasion.
What happens on Simchat Torah happens every year. |
