Is this for all eyes?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_South_African_slang_words Read the afrikaans part of this and make sure no small kids are near by. I was shocked to see this from a "open" internet site.

Ag no man Barend? that is how some South Africans talk, you probably just got a fright when you saw it in print. I laughed my head off when i read it, no body can swear like a South African. I thought it was very funny!! Thank you for enriching my vocab, some of the words were new to me :)

It really irritates me and being an Afrikaner myself, I know we have so many beautiful words, why focus on all the bad ones?

Ek is mal oor my taal, en ja ek weet daar is BAIE vloek woorde, maar hoef dit regtig geadverteer te word...

What's the problem? Very descriptive slang words commonly used in the 'volksmond'. Also known and used by 'small kids' of reading age, I can assure you.

It is the same as those sites that says 'Adults' or you must be over 18 - kids will get it on their cell or watch it anyway, it does not make it right though, i also hate the idea of kids viewing it, but it's there for all to see, unfortunately

I am not sure why Wikipedia focused so much on unsavoury language. It risks giving Afrikaans, a rich language, a bad reputation. All languages have these terms, but this is sampling seems to have a narrow focus. Complain to Wikipedia.

i've seen websites where zulu's sotho's and other southern africans in their language's calling the boere "white cows" and more......

don't make the afrikaans language look rediculous

I came across this the other day when I looked for something. I immediately knew I won't find the answer there. It is disgusting, but you will find this in English and many other languages as well. As for the children seeing that; children today have a richer word range than kids from years ago. I'm sure they know half of those words already, in all languages, I have to remind you.

Karen C, I have never said anything nasty to you and in some cases agree that the language used is unsavoury, but why drag people's parents and teachers into this? You have no idea of the level and quality of education contributors have, so your comment is out of line.
Attack the person, if you have to, not the family.
** I do not agree that a person is a product of the parent. I know wonderful people (who raised their children to be great people) with the worst children, adult and young and vice versa. Another thing, I don't respond to your posts, as I am one of those 'fence sitters' you wrote about. But when I feel strongly about something, like someone attacking the family and not the offending person, then I will have my say. Sorry if this makes me sound foolish.

absolutely not! most on there is completely unacceptable

Yes, it is for all eyes, as you have discovered. But, like Karen C says, that should not shock you or any of the other regulars on this forum. We have been exposed to almost as bad language here posted by quite a few. And I agree that it is indeed a sad reflection on the average South African. What do other users think when they come across such cursing and insulting, do they think that we are ALL like that??

We should always remember that when we post something here, it is a written record, and will stay in the "archives" for all to see, perhaps even our children, parents, employers etc.

Barend, I once posted a link to this and it was deleted. So people are offended by such language, be it in wikipedia or on YASA!!
