Israel & Fatah?

Do you guys think that Israel and Fatah will be able to develop a good dialogue? Do the majority of Palestinians still support Hamas, even after Hamas were so violent when they seized control in Gaza?

The British government ultimately HAD to negotiate with the IRA; will Israel have to include Hamas in talks eventually, even though Hamas refuses to recognize Israel's right to exist?

Can we please keep this a civilised discussion! I am really, really interested in both your factual info and your OPINIONS.
But no insults to anyone!!!
Additional Details
WANDERKIND: please note, I never did compare Hamas and the IRA. I merely noted that the IRA carried out terrorism in the UK and yet the British government, ultimately, did hold talks with them.

I'm not that smart.
No peace can come while enmity by the larger portion is still evident, even if treaties and cease fires are signed, they'll elapse without much concern by those in enmitical power.

Generally peace only comes by three means at this level.

1. Generational shifts, the young learn they don't like the past and change it, or certain old ones of influential nature become wise.

2. Women are accorded equal rights to say, and thus war is abated.

3. Dramatic outside forces.

Now we can see these 3 converging at ever increasing rates, peace will surely come to pass even if it takes horrible natural disaster, or the force of united world government to efface the overt hostilities from the earth.

Hopefully simple aged wisdom, and this wonderful coming of age of the world we are witnessing will win out first before other things more dire take place.

Educate the children, listen to the wise, and give ear to the woman's regard for nurturing, and conflict resolution has its ABCs so to speak, Ancient Beauty Children.

A Humble Baha'i

God bless.

I understand that The State of Israel was formally recognised by the United Nations(UN) in the year of 1948.....In many conflicts and disagreements around the world a small few prefer to use firearms but the majority want to always use the ballot box for fair elections to have a peaceful and happy life.

HopelessZ00
Well I can tell you many bad things about Hamas but I could tell you many bad things about Fatah. I'll leave that one alone. One good note (I think)the president of Afghanistan will now hold peace talks with the Taliban and also offer them a place in the government. Maybe that will bring about the end of war and peace and more understanding, to have this dialogue. But of course both sides have to be willing to have dialogue with all concerned in order to find such peace! Let's wait and see if either 3 sides will change in Israel! Peace!
Also very good point about Britain, Shin Fein (the political side) was also included , and they now have peace. Nice to see that.
edit: yes Tabitha, having a civilized discussion , .....that would have to be the very beginning, Its really hard when others hurt each other with their hated replies as you can see below me. Good question to see if us people in the west can have a civilized discussion, if we can't do that, then how will there be peace in the middle east?

edit @ wanderkin...I think you are not aware of all the bombs that went off in the UK and people that were killed for many many many years? Also Taliban is not internationally accepted. But many people vote for them , that is democracy. As for the terror , yes that has to stop. Maybe dialogue could help? Sometimes we have to talk till we are blue in the face, sometimes we have to comprimise not once but many times. The UK did not stop until they reached an agreement.
@urooj: yes, also hamas was democratically voted also.

purple nurple
I think that the problems between the uk and ira had to be resolved because the pressure from other nations made it embarassing and like a millstone around our necks. I really do not think it would have been done if we were not made to feel the ashamed of this burden. Again, in israel and hamas, there is too much support (from countries who secretly benefit from the situation and like the conflict) and until there is enormous pressure bought on both sides (and the support is truely removed) then the situation will remain poor. Ditto for burma crisis.

There can be more no negotiating with Hamas they are absoloutely commited to destroying Israel and it shows by the their actions. Shooting Qassam rockets into Israel and all the hateful propaganda on the state run television.

At least Britain had a more benign entity to negotiate with. Israel is not so lucky and i say this not as a pro israel person per say but i can see mistake when its about to happen and im sure Israel has already recognized this aswell.

Fatah is corrupt, Fatah is lazy. Those are some of the reasons Fatah got booted out in the elections.

To make real change they have to step up to the plate and shed off their old faults and began anew. But i doubt it; the same holds true of Fatah today...

but you must not forget that Fatah is an armed militia like Hamas.

I remember hearing soemwhere that Fatah had grenade launchers and Hamas didn't so that was a suprise why Hamas won the Gaza Strip.

But some of my criticsm will extend to countries that neighbour Palestine and Israel.

They turn a blind eye to the smugglign of weapons and rockets which only serve to harm the palestinians either way they use them.

They don't really care about the Palestinians they only care about Palestine the peace of realistate.

Have you heard the addage that everyone cares abou Palestine but not the Palestinians?

For more results towards peace i beleive that Fatah and Hamas if it is managable need to be disarmed and only the security force be armed with Ak47's and not some militia who's loyalties can change over night.

wanderkind
An important difference between the Israeli/ Palestinian situation and the British/ Irish situation is that the IRA's ideological position never included destruction of Britain or denial of Britain's right to exist as a sovereign nation. Therefore, I don't think you can compare Hamas to the IRA.

Israel has already negotiated questions of recognition with the Palestinian Authority and it would set a terrible precedent (and not just in the Israeli-Palestinian context) to renegotiate those same issues with Hamas. Should Israel provide more concessions to obtain the same thing, just because the government has changed? No. Hamas must recognize the previous commitments of the Palestinian Authority if it is to be recognized by other nations as a government of the Palestinian people. If Hamas meets the demands of the international community: to recognize Israel, to honor previous commitments of the PA, and to stop terrorism, then Israel can and probably will talk to Hamas.

Fatah has lost its focus. At this point Fatah is more concerned with its own survival as a political organization, and they are trying to have things both ways. Cooperation with Israel has apparently increased, because Fatah is terrified that Hamas will gain power in the West Bank. But they still have to look like they are "resisting occupation," to maintain popular support.
There can be/is dialogue between Israel and Fatah; but I am not optimistic about the long term results because IMO Fatah will be unable (ineffective) or politically unwilling to meet any commitments they make.

(Tabatha, I admire your optimism and wish I could share it. I am guessing there is a significant difference in our ages.)

i have a really short answer to that
and i hope it would not be like my answer
but

NO

Israel and Fatah will NOT be able to develop a good dialogue

Dialog is the only solution to the conflicts of nations. Go back to 1776 when the American Colonies fought the British. It took 13 years and a lot of losses on both sides for dialog to begin and a settlement to be reached. Back then the Americans were the 'terrorists'. There are examples all through time up to the present. Should Israel and Fatah be able to talk to each other? A resounding YES! Will Israel and Fatah talk to each other? Another resounding YES! But there will be one caveat. Both sides will have to sit at the table and really want to have peace.

Urooj
Hammas has emerged as a party with sound standing and heavy medate from Palestinians after the elections, and only a fool can ignore that reality. Palestinians are pressed to the wall and they do not have much choice, they have faced with contineuous violence, opression and brutality through out the years. Fatah did not do well, and perhaps Hamas will also fail, but they are an alternate.
Besides shall we forget that Hammas was actually funded by Israel as a barrier against Fatah in its initial days, there is nothing final in politics! alliances are made to be broken and changing realities force parties to change their motives and objectives.

Dear Tabatha;
I am so sincere about this response that I am willing to use proper syntax, spelling and punctuation to get your attention.
The stated purpose of Israels enemies is their annihilation .
Don't kid Yourself ahmenajerk of Iran speaks for the majority of the middle eastern world as well as most Muslims world wide.
I'm not trying to be a hater here but I'm a realist.
while living in the middle east I read every local paper that was printed in English that was available to me .The Arab Times ,The Kuwaiti daily whatever were unanimous in Their condemnation of Jews,Muslim schools don't even show Israel on the atlas as if it doesn't exist as is their desire.the Pakistani and Muslim Indians that i worked with spat the name Israel.
In short the state of Israel has no more business negotiating with hamas or Fatah than Chamberlain had negotiating with Hitler . The net result will be the same,or worse.

All what we can do is hope. A lot of Palestinains are against Hamas now.

Pasta
Fatah are murderers.

Israel would be foolish to sign anything with them.

HI
I realy don't think there will ever be peace in Isreal or with the Palestinians, you see there is too much loss in lives, and each side hates ecah other, they will fight to the end, while Amercia supplies Isreal with weapons and money to kill the muslim.

sar
Why did the British have to negotitate ? Because the IRA was hitting them were it hurts most. They started destroying town centres and hit the Canary warf in london, costing the British billions and big business was thinking twice about being in london and moving away.

Things are not finished in the North of Ireland yet. If there is a united Ireland like the Sinn Fien and IRA want then its back to square 1 only this time its the loyalists who claim to be fighting for freedom.

In the end violence has worked for the IRA. They are closer to united Ireland than they have been for a long time.

My point is that when you use the North of Ireland as an example you are actually showing that violence does work. Not violence to kill lots of innocent people or the troubles in Ireland would haven been solved along time ago like in the 70s and the pub bombings and other attrocites that the IRA done. Governemts don't care about the loss of civilian life but when they start hitting economic targets and costing the governemt billions then thats when things change and violence works.

Fatah are the original terrorists. The have killed thousands of Jews.

It would be insane to even speak to them.

Would you negoitiate with Hitler?

lasuremartin
It won't end until Palestinian parents love their children more than they hate Jews. Then they'll have to clean up the corrupt thieves that have been hording all the money that has come from all over the world.

I have often thought that these were the most brain dead people on the planet. If the middle east was a safe place to visit, people would come in droves to visit and tour all the historic sites.

ÐÅ MÅN ☺ ☻
that will only be so IF Israel bribes fatah into working for them like they have done in the past, no wonder why the majority of palestinians is not with them

hotmaleforever
i am sure that all who answered your question are israelies or at least jews so no wonder why they all defend israel's point of view, i am sure if someone who doesn't know what is the matter and it happened to look at your answers i bet he would think that all of you are israel's attorny.

let's make it clear to eveybody:

1- there nothing called israel.
2- the so called israel is only a front for USA and EU in the middle east and this front is to watch for Arab's oil.

Ultranational
The mistake of Israel was in ever recognizing palesimians, and ever paying attention to them as if they were human beings capable of negotiation.
palesimians will support whatever party promises to push the Jews into the sea better than the other party can.
Fatah are the oldest continuous group of palesimian terrorists. However, out of hamas, they are the lesser of two evils, if you wish to rank evil.
In some cases, dialogue is just BS'ing, beating around the bush. Force ALWAYS guarantees results, as will soon be seen when negotiations fail with Iran and war breaks out.
