Limiting the number of wives in Egypt to one ?

would you support or oppose this law when/if it is discussed ?

I would oppose this law. There must be wisdom that we may not understand, the first wife may accept that her husband marries another woman on the basis of: dil ragel wala dil hait. I am of the opinion that when it is allowed to marry more than one wife, men will have no excuse for having a relationship with another woman if he is married. The other woman can- under the current law- ask him to marry her if he loves her. But with a new law that prevents this, men- who are not satisfied with one woman- will argue that they can not marry another woman. I do not know why some men would act like that, but it seems to be the nature of some of them. And this seems to be international, think how many men are cheating on their wives around the world.

Arabian Dune
yes I would oppose it. Not because I want to have more than one wife, ( not a bad idea now that I've mentioned it ) but because god knows better than us. pure and simple.

Kalooka
i oppose it. Although i am a one woman man, i am against second wife (for me) but i think this particular matter should not be put in a law because there are still many cases which needs this second marriage..
Laws are discussed originally because they are suppose to balance or regulate certain issue the "needs"immediate attention or the consequences would be far more harmful than leaving the status as it is..so, i don't think there's a need to discuss such a law in the first place..i mean, who has problems with it? does it holds a first or second or even tenth priority in the family-related lawsuits and problems?
i guess not..

Allah (SWT) says one thing and man says another. I'll stick with what Allah (SWT) says.

No, I'm not looking for 4 wives.

SS I totally Agree! but here in America if I had 2 wives I would go to jail! I dont think I could handle more than 1 anyway LOL

Ranoush(ppl thumbed me down:p)
of course not...
i will oppose that law because this law is against our religion's law,and even i don't like this but there are some cases where more than one wife is a good thing.

Let the Prophet answer your question: not me (I am no one): In fact the Prophet (saws) did not allow Saydnan Ali ben Aby Taleb to get married to another wife (when he asked) than his daughter Fatimah, He waved the permission of more than one wife ,, for the sake of his daughter, With reference to that, the woman or her (waly alamer ) can wave this permission to achieve the stability of the family, wali alamer is the Government now,

otherwise why we do not give men also the permission to have (gawary/Amaah /maidens ,,,this permission is also waved),,
And Adam: I did not hear that you opposed this law in your country USA,, you are an American , are not you, You can not oppose or agree with any law in Egypt,,,,

edit: Was the Prophet (saws )against God's will in the previous event?(esta3'for Allah)??Or we choose what we like and reject what we do not from the religion? 3agabi..
------------------------------------
well: Adam: 1) The ruler is wali alamr, especially if he was elected, I do not care if he is bad or good, if he is bad, why people remain him as a ruler, it is their fault beside his, I am talking about wali alamr as a legal elected chosen person. can be also the court, if you do not like the president, or people assembly..you said my point may be valid depend of the ruler, so with a fair one can be done,"" that is good"", so we are talking now about who rules not the question's issue anymore,,,,that is a good step... (so they say in Egypt (Anta 7afez meh fhem )english: learn by heart but do not understand)
2) You can not be involved in apposing or accepting laws in Egypt because you are not Egyptian, as I can not appose or accept laws in Saudi Arabia or Usa,, it is very simple, and yes we are not one Ummah, or why the rich Muslim arabs jsut let our children die sinking into the sea while investing their money in las Vegas, in Gambling casinos? and let the EC&USA send us charity ?? or we are one Umah only in al 3'omah, and women related subjects??
3)God creats Brains to us , to understand the wisdom behind events, If the Prophet did that, it was for a reason (to prove the permission can be waved), we would be very stupid not to understand that reason
4)the beauty of Islam , it does not need a priest or a mufti to show God, and understand the religion’s wisdom, that was the privilege of Islam always, any way if You know my education you will be really shocked,,

5)To whom thumbs that down , you are simply do not thumb my answer down, I did not answer this question, The Prophet did more than 1400 years ago,,,,so enjoy

6)finally again to Adam : who pervened having (amah/maiden)?? was that any chalifah? Should we have a market for them in Tahrir square???

The fact that the Egyptians stopped thinking long time ago, makes it very sensble to me that they appose things based on ignorance, or an advice from a foreign, hired (son of yesterday Muslim who may be hardly understanding or speaking Arabic, (ADAM : Please read the definition of wali al amr in any arabic dictionary) ...why do not you read what Mohamed said إن يضرني ما يضر فاطمه when Aly asked him for a second wife, would the Prophet be hurted from something Halal without having the ability to oppose it ??? No one makes people cheap, only people make themselves cheap, (WAITING FOR GAWARY MARKET IN TAHRIR SQUARE INSHALLAH), while that:keep escaping on rafts,!!!!!!

-----------
@Balsam: from a man: A man who would cheat in his first and only wife, will cheat on even his four wives, the fact that a man can get married to more than one, do not do any good for a man who is accustomed to cheat on his wife,,,...(do not you see The Saudis in the Cairo, or in Europe or even Dubi in the holidays ??
This will be my last answer in this community, as it was said' Mafesh faydah' cheers

well; i mentioned the saudis and the people of Dubai, for a simple reason , that the government of the state of Dubai, just invested $2.7 billion in the biggest gambling entertainment casino in the USA,, check the news,, what a friendly good people one Oumah...!!!

http://www.pr-inside.com/dubai-world-may-raise-its-stake-r258016.htm
It true that Islam is a victim of it is people,,,,,

@Salfat: I do not generalize,of course there are good people , i meant lots there are married to more than one and still cheat their wives, (Europeans do not marry to moe than one, ,,,but may cheat or not their wives,,, You know I do not mean hurting you, in fact i found you as a very logic , nice person )

I am all for it...why should a man have more than 1 wife??

GREEK BARBiE
omg i am absolutely astounded by some of the answers here. You oppose to having a law where it says a man has to loyal and faithful to his wife????

I dont see why any man would want to have a second wife, or any woman wanting to have a second husband.

And dont give me all this religious stuff. Religion and laws should be seperated. Laws are made to constraint violence, and force a more civilized society. Religion, is personal and spiritual, and everyone interpets it differently spiritually and personallly. Laws are civil and just. Emotions don't force laws to happen, justice is!! And l wouldn't call it justice when a man can have 4 wives, meanwhile a woman can have only one. And then Egyptians always wonder why Egypt is behind!!

even though i am against men marrying more than one women, i wouldn't support this law, this is a law in the US, but marrying more than one woman is sometimes a religious matter and shouldn't be messed with politically...

mesho f
this issue will not be discussed ever.
because second clause in the constitution:Islam is the basic source off all laws.
so Islam allow four we couldn't prevent it as the constitution said.
second thing all people in charge in the political life have more than one wife, so they will not allow this to happen

I would oppose it.There are situations were the taking of another wife is done as a means of giving a woman security and protection.
While there are few men who could actually afford to take more than one wife, many can hardly afford that,it remains part of Islamic culture and law, that the man can have more than one wife.
But only if he is able to fully care for each wife equally and without favour in terms of companionship, emotional and financial support.
All children must also be treated equally and no favour shown to the children of one wife above the other.,

Who am I to change God's law ??!

Edit:

@Zoser: in defence of Saudis, your comment is general and hurts. Why you mentioned only Saudis?, there are also European, Arabs and many other nationalities who do these things without going in details but they are all minority.

Of course I oppose it...Allah(swt) has ordained it...so be it...however, i must correct one comment I read. Yes, a man must financially support his wife equally etc etc...but emotionally? this is patently incorrect. The prophet (saws) was to known to love Aisha (ra) more than his other wives..and Khadija (ra) more than even Aisha...emotions are something that arent controllable to that extent....Behaviour is, but not the heart.

@Zoser, why cant i oppose this law? we are supposed to be ONE umma, not American, Egyptian etc etc. And yes the prophet (saws) did not permit Ali(ra) to take another wife. But the govt of Egypt is Not the wali of the people...where did u get this? Mubarek is Not the calipha...there isint one anymore. If there were, u might have a valid point. I know many brothers here in the US that have more than one wife by the way. Please show me your degree in Fiqh to give such a fatwa...i paraphrased mine from a book on figh...

A Friend 4ever
its against God's will ....

i am against ....

and at the same time i am not encouraging men to marry 4 ... just when it is necessary .. .he should be allowed ... but with informing the wife first and to be fair between them.
