I would not. But here is why some do it. This is not to be judged; it is to be understood. If you're interested, read on.

Let me start by saying that I am not Muslim/Arab/Jewish/African, but I have studied women's conditions across different cultures and religions. A lot of people are misinformed about polygamy in Islam. Initially, the 4 wife rule was because the ratio women- men was higher, much higher. Mohamed made this law so that women would be able to get married and be taken car of. Remember that prior to Judaism & Christianity society was matriarchal and matrilineal, and with the demonization of and killing of the myth of Lilith, women no longer had rights to property. For 25000 years before that, they did - women ruled and society flourished.

Second, the only Muslims that have numerous wives (a harem) do so not because of Islam, but because they have money and like women - but so do the Japanese. In Japan most rich older man have young, attractive "translators", which in fact, are their concubines.

The second type of Muslim who marries a second wife is the kind who's first wife is sick/ill. This - he does so the second wife can take care of the children and be like a mother to them and a sister to the first wife. It's not all about sex, like many think. It's about the children. Your average Arab-Muslim is very much in the family way.

In addition, there are tribes in Africa where the first wife actually asks the husband for a second (or third or 4th) wife because she needs help. Gikuyu women in Mutira, for instance, live in compounds and their lives are difficult. To these women, having another woman to help with taking care of the house and the children is a blessing. The one thing they need to work on in that region is female genital cutting. Not only is that scary, but it's a stupid tradition that they need to do away with for the safety of these poor girls.

Finally, years back while in college, I asked a Muslim colleague if he would consider marrying another woman, in addition to his wife. He smiled and said: "Are you nuts? I can barely handle one woman."

I think this time Codindra has covered all aspects of your question most eloquently.
As all wives in a polygamist Muslim marriages must by law be treated equally in every way not many males can afford to take one wife let alone more.
This has nothing really to do with the actual subject matter but,
I know many Western women who who love to get rid of their husband for a few nights a week.
Or are you thinking of Mormon polygamy?
For that is a different set of rules again. There are a number of right wing Christian sects that encourage polygamy without any of the protection that a woman has from Islam.

I believe that we are not animals and are much evolved than them. Dedication is one quality which humans should have. One man one woman is the way to be.

As a Musilim I accept the fact that our religion says you can marry up to 4 wives but that does not mean I agree with the practice. Most Muslim women have the option to put it into their marriage contract that their husband is not allowed to marry another wife and/or must ask for his wifes permission to do so. However, it's more important to note that Muslim men who do this should be extremely careful. The Quran does mention that you can marry up to four wives but on the condition that you must treat all wive equally and fair. In the same exact chapter it goes on to tell men that they can never be fair between two women. It is obvious to those who can think that Allah has put this in to allow for women who have no husband and no prospects of marriage a way to be married and protected. However Allah has also placed such stringent restrictions on these marriages because he prefers you be faithful to one wife. At the time this verse was given women needed to have a husband in order to survive. The husband was the one who worked and brought income and food, he provided security and protection and a woman without a husband was left extremely vulnerable. The area was swept up in war and men were dying left and right. This left many women without a husband meaning they were left without a life. In order to protect the widows and orphans Allah allowed for multiple wive to ensure that all women would be safe. However, it is in my eyes no longer necessary and so I would never accept being a second wife and would never accept my husband marrying a second wife. We made a covenant together to love only each other as husband and wife and that's what we intend to do. My husband studied Islam at Al Azhar and he agrees that Allah prefers you not marry more than one and if you do you had better watch yourself carefully for Allah himself said you can NEVER be fair between two women!

I am very happy to say not to long ago i posted a question for women asking if they would marry a man who thought that marrying more than one woman was ok and 100% of the women who answered all said NO they would leave him in the dirt... Im glad that theres still strong women who have self esteems... and to any man who answers this question as yes was not raised right I feel sorry for his mother:) So my answer is no I would never let a man degrade me in this way:)

ALOT of women say they wouldnt accept for the man to have more than one wife. But depending on the school of thought, the man doesnt even have to tell the first wife....Its not her concern....as long as she is supported etc. Ok having said that, thats not the reality in these days, However many women say they wouldnt accept, but if the man goes and does it, alot less of the women actually ask for the divorce. They simply adjust and its not a big deal
Ok the man still should do it for the right reason, ie; charity, sick wife, wife who cant have kids, etc....

First of all I want to say that marrying four wives is acceptable as God bade it as long as you will treat the four of them equally but what I am saying is a personal opinion.
As for me I don't think I'll marry four wives as I think it is pretty distracting.

The most important condition is fairness. Even if you can physically and financially support 2,3, or 4 you have to make sure that you deal fairly with all of them. sice we are all humans, this is very difficult to achieve in normal situation, then you MUST as per the Quoran stay with only one, unless you have an exteremly good reason.

Polygamy is an answer to many situations we are facing, but many people still cannot realise or understand.

my question to you is, all over the world females are more than males, there will always women who cannot find a partner. what is the solution? this is the answer to your second part of the question, you need to find an alternative decent solution for those women.
