if your having so many doubts and have to come on here to ask other people, it means you dont really want to go deep down. Just stay with your family...they are much more important than one wedding where the people getting married prob wont even notice your not there! |

Its your brothers wedding. Surely he wants you there.
You will be safe as long as you don't do the "tourist" thing. If you are going to drive make sure your doors are locked, windows are closed and that you have your eyes open Don't leave anything of value lying on the seat next to you. Its best to put you handbag under your seat. Don't flash your cellphone around.
SA might be crime ridden but if you follow precautions you should be safe. |

SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY, GO FOR IT!
DRIVING CAN BE INTIMIDATING IF YOU'RE NOT USED TO IT BUT YOU CAN HIRE A CAR WITH A DRIVER AT jOHANNESBURG International, very reasonable and well worth it for the peace of mind. Have a great trip! |

Went to South Africa last year. I was very apprehensive. No problems and we had the best holiday of our lives. We took our family, though. We were very security conscious but I didn't feel threatened. |

First of all dont listen to baldy old git as he hates anybody or anything that has got to do with South Africa and he will do anything he can to criticise, insult or spread rumours about South Africa. He has been doing this for a long time so just ignore him!
South Africa is a safe place! We do have crime and it is high but if you take caution, if you are alert and if you have proper protection or security you will be fine! Dont be scared to come here because its its more than half as bad as you think it is!!
Mabalingwe is a wonderful place to go to. You will love it! It is beautiful and you will love it!! It is safe, it is comfortable, relaxing, beautiful, fun and so so much more! Please take a look at this link i found for you so that you can find more information on Mablingwe. You will be 100% safe there.

I think in my opinion is to sacrifice a 2 week holiday with your family and come here. It is your brothers wedding which is a once in a life time experience and im sure he would love it if you came to his wedding! You and your family can go on another holiday another time and plenty more times after that. It would actually be great if you brought your family to South Africa with you.
The only thing i do not reccomend you not doing is driving 1.5 hours to the wedding as you will not know the way 100% and you may get lost. If you do know the way and you're 100% sure that you know the way then it will be fine for you to drive yourself there.

P.s. Those pics from that 'Crime Expo' site is not real and it is from a site called rotton.com. Check out rotton.com and see for yourself. |

I havent been back to SA for 4 years now. I cant honestly say for certain that it is totally safe, but like most countries can you really say that about them. I think that the best advice i can give is dont travel after dark if you dont know where you are going. When travelling for peace of mind lock your doors and carry your mobile with you. You will be fine at the lodge.
I travelled from Cape Town up to the Orange Free State, by myself. It was an 18 hour drive and went on the N1. I was fine and didnt feel unsafe at all.
Dont listen to the doom and gloomers. It is your brothers wedding. and you will miss out on a fantastic experience. |

Hi
Please do not listen to baldy old git. Yes, South Africa has crime just like other cities in the world. Yes you can drive to the game reserve but I'd say it would be better if you had a guy with you in the car. Don't take any dirt tracks, or deserted areas. But yeah, you'll love it! |

To baldy old git and others...please, please, please!!!!!!!!!! Yes,
we have a problem of crime here; but let me tell you something of the author of the crimeexpo site..the photo's he used on his website is sourced from other websites - not even South African ones. He also used material from one of our tv-channels without their permission. Someone has offered him a one way ticket out of here - he has stated that he will take it if the offer is for his whole family and the cat. I am not so sure about his motives any more. I will not deny that we have crime. I myself have been a victim 6 times - but lucky I never was injured and only some possesion was stolen from me. Yes there can be done some more things to combat crime. There is a lot of negative but also such a lot possitve in this country. Why the hell don't you come and find out for yourself what it is like for real, instead you are just negative and negative and negative. In some countries it is also not safe - so why is it so different then here? Because of some guy that put op a website of crime and some facts on it is not even true? So why should you trust this website then? To the asker - it is safe enough. If you have the oppertunity pleas come and visit and form your own opinion. |

It's pretty safe, just be careful. don't drive at night, get the hotel to pick you from the airport, get a map book when you arrive just in case you are lost. finally keep your mobile phone with you, you can get a sim card for next to nothig. Enjoy your trip. |

It's safe. You just have to be careful as you would in any other country. Mabalingwe is a very cool game reserve. It's a once in a life time opportunity that not many people get so take it. |

Hi, i am proudly South African, it is abeautiful country. Do be careful though as you would in any foreign country travelling on your own. I would advise it safer to travel with some one else if possible. I'm sure the wedding will be lovely - what a great setting. Here is a link to a website set up in response to that crime expose one - which please, take no note of, he is only hurting the country more and people who are trying to take things forward, and those who work in the tourism industry trying to promote their beatiful country, here's the link http://www.realsouthafrica.co.za/ |

You will be perfectly OK as long as you know where you are going and have a map when you drive, also a mobile phone in case you break down.
You will have a fantastic time at your brother's wedding, if you go you will so glad you didn't miss the experience |

I will be as honest as I can with you. If you have looked at the site www.crimexposouthafrica.org you will have a pretty good idea of what is going on down there. That does not mean it is totally unsafe and staying on a Game Lodge you will be OK. Simply because they are well off the beaten track and have not as yet to my knowledge attracted any of the high profile crime. The cities are the main no go areas particularly after dark but it is also unsafe to travel on many major highways and roads after dark. Jhb has a number of elegant shopping malls which will be very safe to visit during daytime as well as eat there in the evening. Again the issue is driving at night to and from a destination particularly as you are unfamiliar with the territory which is not nearly as well sign posted as here in the UK. Flying alone is definitely not a problem but you seem to indicate you will be driving alone to a Game Lodge some 90 minutes from the Airport. I would strongly advise you against doing that for the aforementioned reason and you should only travel with a local and/or someone you know. In all probability it will go off without a hitch but you cannot be too careful in SA and you must always have your wits about you. Sorry to be so negative but things are really bad from a crime perspective and there is a situation where their Government and some citizens are in complete denial because they fear losing the World Cup. If you want more info please contact me.
To Queen B - You are typical of the South Africans in denial. Please explain 54 murders per day for the last 5 years. The photos you refer to are genuine pictures from SA and rotten.com sees SA as it's prime source of photos. You are without any morality whatsoever inviting innocent tourists to your Country without any regard whatsoever for their safety. They have a right to know and make an informed decision and not be duped by the lies of your Tourist Boards and disinformation of your Government. |
