As for your question, we need to mention here that the role of women in Islam has been misunderstood in the West because of general ignorance of the Islamic system and way of life as a whole, the current lifestyle of some muslims and because of the distortions of the media.

The Muslim woman is accorded full spiritual and intellectual equality with the Muslim man. She is encouraged to practice her religion and develop her intellectual faculties throughout her life.

Prophet Muhammad granted permission to Muslim women to attend mosques and pray standing behind the rows of men. He even advised the Companions by saying: “Do not prevent the female servants of Allah from going to the mosque”
So, both men and women are allowed to pray in the mosque in the same jama`ah (group prayer).

But how? The Prophet explained how: When men and women are together in the mosque, we should have first lines of men behind the imam, then children, and then women. This is the way Muslims used to pray behind the Prophet , and, as I mentioned, we cannot invent new rules in our religion by our own desires, but we stick to what came in the Qur’an

Remember that the ritual Prayer involves bowing and prostrating. The wisdom of separating men and women during Prayers is to protect the hearts of the Muslims, both men and women, from any distracting ideas or evil suggestions that the devil may whisper into their hearts. This is especially between men and women, in order to keep their hearts pure and sincere and busy only with Prayer. For the same reason, the mixing between men and women in general has special rules in Islam.

yes women and men can pray together in the same room on condition that the women pray behind the men,and obviously the reason has nothing to do with superiority of men or whatso ever..
it's just so that men won't be distracted during prayer if they looked at the women from their back..

Having read the above responses to your question, I am wondering...it seems the focus is mainly on keeping the males' desires in check, but do not women also have desires? Why must a female be responsible for not allowing herself to appear as a woman, simply to keep down the desires or lusts of men? Women, too, have the strong ability to have those same notions when viewing a male. It's natural.
I'm not referring to the naked body of man or woman, but to the simple form of humans, in general.
In some lands, the women must wear berkas (sp) so men cannot lust after them. Women, however, are allowed to view a man's face.
Forgive my ignorance (if there be any) but what is so terribly wrong with both sexes focusing themselves on their devotion to their 'higher power' and not succumbing to these so-called 'evils'?

They definitely can! The rules is to divide the room (a partition is not a must) men usually pray together shoulder to shoulder and women pray together shoulder to shoulder behind the same imam (prayer leader).
They do not intermingle in prayers because it would distract them from their prayers. which is the main intention behind going to a masjd.
A proof for this is that in the holly masjid in Mecca women and men are praying together in millions!

Typically, it was supposed to be like this:

Men in front, boys in the back, youngest in the rear. Then women, (so they can't be in contact with men) then girls. All that was in the same room, so they can pray together in the same room, but people are plentiful these days...

they can pray in one room and they don't have to be relatives or husband and wife , in mosques women and men pray together but women pray behind men.

also when we have guests or friends visiting us we pray to gather men in front and women at the back.

women can destruct men specially if they are not wearing proper clothes.

As for CharJ, I’m sure you don’t mean any harm either and you’re just curios. Here’s my unprofessional opinion.
Men get turned on by seeing women’s butts and that’s a fact. And most men will look if they see one posing in front of them; it’s a natural thing for men. Men think about sex very frequently, it’s in their nature. Women on the other hand are more reasonable concerning that subject, they do not think about sex as frequent as men do, they do not look when they shouldn’t because they are shyer, and definitely there’s nothing to turn on a woman when seeing a man’s butt. Men get turned on and are distracted easier, that’s all. It’s a weakness, not discrimination against women.

Here is just an additional note to the fine answers here. Men and women in Many Christian demoninations prayed on opposite side of the aisles in church. This was the practice for hundreds and hundreds of years. Only in the last 100 years of so did it change......as for women being 'aroused' by praying behind a man. well I suppose it could happen, But a woman cant have sex with a man from behind, soooo it only makes sense that since this position is only really possible for men, that men would be the ones more likely to be aroused....

if u muslim u will know the woman must dress awide dress or uniform to her body can t be seen so they can t bray together becuase the man must concetrate in praying
