Muslims & Jews; Israelis & Arabs - answer this please?

I've been greatly cheered by the many positive and interesting answers to my previous questions. Yes, there are a few people who are still being foolish and rude, but the rest of us are behaving like decent human beings.

Now: Muslims & Arabs, please name the ONE book about the Middle East situation, either fiction or non fiction, that you would make compulsory reading for Israelis.

Israelis and Jews, please name the one book you would have all Muslims and Arabs read on this topic.

I'm really looking forward to these answers and I hope to get a few of the books named, so give some interesting choices, guys!
Additional Details
Let's say any book EXCEPT the Old Testament or the Quran!

I am going to a book for both actually - for those to understand the Palestinian side I would suggest a book I read a number of years ago (ok it was twenty years ago when I was in college take a course on the Arab-Israeli conflict) entitled The Disinherited: Journal of a Palestinian Exile by Fawaz Turki http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&EAN=9780853452485&itm=34 . As for a good reader from the Jewish perspective would be The Case for Israel by Alan M. Dershowitz http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&EAN=9780471679523&itm=6 in which Dershowitz effective attacks and eliminates 32 issues that are directed at Israel and shows what the Jewish (or a Jewish) perspective is on these issues.

Tabatha you are a great and a peaceful girl. I am sorry that I can't answer your question because I live in Canada and I don't know what books they have in the middle east. I tried to find something on the internet though tha may help.
I didn''t read this book but I scanned some of its pages and I think it is a good one,I hope.

Thank you for asking and have a good day.

A very good book by a lebanese christian infact is "gate of the sun"

It is very well written and highlites the situation for palestinians in refugee camps.

It is a fiction book though. It has a 101 arabian nights feel to it.

I have to go with the choice of Da Man: Jimmy Carter's Palestine: Peace not Apartheid.

It has great relevance since it is written by the only American president who was able to broker a successful peace agreement between Arabs and Israelis.

With his huge experience in the field, including the Noble peace prize he holds, its a shame that his oppinion was countered with the usual anti-semite accusations.

I guess it is indicative of the general environment opposing a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in Israel at the moment.

Edit to ivri_anokhi: So do you have the courage to mention the similar passages in the Torah and the Talmud or the Talmudic laws "Halakha" (I just don't feel like rewriting them all again)... or you just prefer to coward behind the Quranic text alone.

Do you have the courage to answer the following questions; What were the divine orders to Joshua when reconquering the "Promised land"? What is the punishment of adultery in Judaism? How many wives and concubines "or sex slaves" as you like to call them did David and Solomon your greatest kings have? (have I heard 700 wives and 300 concubines somewhere... wow). What does the Talmud say about Gentiles?

Well, if the answer is any different or better than the Quranic text I'll owe you a big appology. If they are identical though make me a favour and chose one of the following; either believe in the Quran as the truth, admit that your greatest prophets and kings were perverts too or just keep quiet. Thanks

Edit to Tabatha: Thank you for your nice questions and attempts to lead a respectable and clean debate in the Israeli section. I sure would have loved all would stick by the rules of decency regardless of our affiliations. But unfortunately this is easier said than done.

Any way, all our religious books, Torah, (Talmud), New Testament and Quran do contain passages that could be misinterpreted or maliciously used as ivri_anokhi did. I hope you wouldn't be offended by my reply to him, but I do appreciate your understanding since I try my best to keep the discussion within the civilized limits.

You could have a look at the Talmudic texts I was referring to in the following question:

ONE BOOK

Palestine: Peace or Apartheid by Jimmy Carter

James Bond
I'm not sure where you live, but in the united states our news on the middle east is pretty one-sided. If you want to hear the other side of the story, read the following book:

"The new Intifada: Resisting Israel's Apartheid" (link below)

http://www.amazon.com/New-Intifada-Resisting-Israels-Apartheid/dp/1859843778

There is also the book called "the history of the middle east", by Peter Mansfield.

Morally, the Israel should read carefully what God said about the new Israel in the Holy Quraan.

: 1. 'And We warned Banu [the Children of] Isra'il in the Book that twice you will do mischief on the earth and be elated with arrogance. When the first of the warnings came to pass, We sent against you Our very powerful servants who ravaged your lands. And it was a warning fulfilled. Then We granted you victory against them and increased your resources"JEWISH Lobby" and numbers and made you numerous in (fighting) man-power. If you do well, you do well for yourselves; if you do evil, you do evil for yourselves. When the second warning comes to pass (We will permit your enemies) to humiliate your faces and to enter the Mosque as they did enter before, utterly destroying all that they lay their hands on (Surah [chapter] al-Isra', 17:4-7).

"If you do well, you do well for yourselves; if you do evil, you do evil for yourselves." Is occupation evil or do well. Its up to the Israeli according to God.

If the Messiah is coming today who will he save the Palestinians whose lands was taken by force and living in a Refugee Camps for the last 50 years. Or the Israelis forces, which took the Palestinian, homes and land and cities?
The Messiah is fare and justice and love and peace how can he stand on the occupation side.

The human book would be Palestine Peace or Apartheid by Jimmy Carter.

Thank you for this question, as a Muslim i have great respect for Jews and Christians alike, it's time to put behind us all our differences, and guide our fellow brothers of the same religion that still have middle ages view of things to change as well and bury the hatchet.
As far as a book i will recommend :Creating True Peace
by a Buddhist and as a cherry on top i let you with a simple but meaningful paint by Mister Picasso himself on this link :http://www.cardaid.co.uk/catalog/images/13158_DoveOfPeace_l.gif

Tabitha, I am neither, but I hope a follow-on question to both groups is what book about the Middle East Situation would you want people who are neither Muslims/Arabs or Israelis/Jews to read? I'm an American Christian, descended from Europeans, who cares about the situation.

As an Israeli, I am thrilled at this friendly new exhange between Jews and Muslims, I really feel this is the way forward for us all.

Thank you Tabatha!

The novel I choose is 'Exodus' by author Leon Uris, it's a deeply moving story and I believe it conveys how Jews feel about having a homeland.

A Read the land rights for Palestine pre world war two.

An excellent choice for all interested would be Joan Peters'
book, "From Time Immemorial", publ. 1984.
(This is also in response to comments on your question by Julie Travelcaster and Mel. )

The author is a journalist. She is neither Jewish nor Arab. Although many tried, no one ever succeeded in refuting her thesis.
Not surprisingly, some found this book so threatening that there was an attempt (throughout the mid to late 1980s) to have it removed from bookstores.

books written by jews will be jew-biased. by palestine will be their bias. outsiders will try to be neutral but somehow dont make it. friedman's commentaries/articles r quite objective, altho jewish of mid-east origin.
if only both will sit and talk instead of firing rockets/missiles @ each other. still a long way to go! if they had accepted barak's proposal in 2000, they wld probably got their independence by 2002! and then settle issues one by one

It is most important for all literate people to read and become familiar with the Quran, so that they can understand Islam.

Some choice passages are as follows:

Amputation for petty theft:
Sura 5:38: Cut off the hands of thieves, whether they are male or female, as punishment for what they have done a deterrent from God: God is almighty and wise.

Kill unbelievers:
Sura 9:123. O ye who believe! fight the unbelievers who gird you about, and let them find firmness in you: and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.

Don't be friends with Jews or Christians:
Sura 5:51: O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your allies and protectors: They are but allies and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.

Sex slaves are permitted:
Sura 4:24: Also (prohibited are) women already married, except those whom your right hands possess.

Kill disbelievers:
Sura 2:191. And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have Turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith.

Permission for a Muslim man to beat his wife if she does not obey him:
Sura 4:34: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in their sleeping places and **beat them**; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

Fight disbelievers until you subjugate them:
Sura 9:29: Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

Death for apostasy:
Sura 4:89: "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks.
