NON-Alcoholic wine and beer, What is your opinion? |
Is it a good thing, and harmless?
Or is it immitating the haraam, and a first step towards alcohol?
I have just discovered non-alcoholic wine (I know I'm a little slow LOL) when asking for subsitutes for wine, when cooking because I wanted to cook some European food that used wine.. but of course don't want to use alcohol
Is it halaal for me to use , or is it like having pork flavoured crisps (which don't contain pork.. pork, well still would be haram.. because who wants the taste of pork. Additional Details OK Just to make it CLEAR:
I have NEVER had pork flavoured crisps. NEVER want to. I couldn't imagine a more disgusting thing to eat.
I'm not ocessed with pork. I just gave it as an example. And was interested to know whether you thought non alcoholic wine/beer was a similar concept.
I ask it here because I want Egyptian opinion :) I'm not really bothered for expert opinion as I'm capable of reasearching that myself. |

I think you should look at the purpose behind not using alchohol. The reason is that it can alter your perception and make it so you do other things that are bad. However even alcoholic beverages when cooked become non-alchoholic. I don't remember who specifically but several scholars have said that it is alright to eat foods that have been cooked with alchohol (like at a restaurant) but that it is better not to do it yourself. I don't see any harm in using a non-alcholic beverage to flavor your foods. How do you feel about using vinegar? Vinegar is basically the same thing as a wine... it's fermented ethenol! Yet, people use vinegar everyday without a second thought. If you are using the non alchohlic beverages to flavor your food because you want to expand your horizons then I think it is halal. If your intention is to show off that you have something like alchohol then it's haram. Alcohol is a natural ocurrance that takes place in everyday foods and beverages such as fruit juice and breads as others have already mentioned but the difference is the intention of drinking fruit juice is not to get drunk and drinking it does not affect behavior. Eating bread does not risk losing control of your mind either. Look at the reason why it's considered haram and apply it to your situation.
P.S. I agree who want's to taste pork? I'm a muslim convert who has tasted pork before conversion and nobody is missing anything, it's gross! |

Non-Alcohholic beer is healthy and no problem with it.
Non-Alcoholic wine is not haram but I don't know anything special about it for health.
About Pork you need a specialist Muslim to answer you. Not a normal person.
You can send them your question to get a good short answer. |

According to western standards, the definition of Non Alcoholic beverages is "drinks containing less than 0.5% Alcohol by volume", so you could have a drink labeled Non-Alcoholic but still containing a small percentage of Alcohol.
Don't be alarmed by this fact because even the regular fruit juice you drink here in egypt (fresh or canned) contains a similar small percentage, it is impossible to have a solution containing sugar or starch 100% free of alcohol since fermentation is a natural process occuring all the time around us and even inside our own bodies.
Another example is Molasse (عسل أسود). Even inside a fridge it starts fermenting the more you leave it the higher the concentration of alcohol in it. On packages in Europe they recommend to boil it to get rid of most of the alcohol when it starts fermenting. But here in Egypt of course being the taboo it is we just prefer to keep quite and eat it as it is. It is the theory of the ostrich (Bury your head in the sand and every thing will be all right :)
I guess I should mention the example of bread also, the yeast used to (raise) ferment bread is the same as the one used to make beer (خميرة بيرة). And indeed the fermented dough contains as much as 5% Alcohol by liquid volume. Most of the alcohol though evaporates through the process of baking. In European cuisine most of the Alcohol used in cooking evaporates also by the heat (I'm not making any recommendations here to cook with wine, I'm just stating facts).
After this introduction back to your question. Since even regular fruit juices contain a percentage of alcohol of around 0.1% due to the natural process of fermentation we spoke of, then I guess beverages advertised as non alcoholic and containing a similar percentage can not be considered haram.
According to my humble oppinion (stressing on the fact that I'm not a religious expert) I guess the hadith clarifies this issue when the Prophet peace be upon him said (ما كان كثيره مسكر، فقليله حرام) and i doubt any one can get drunk regardless of how much he drinks of fruit juice, non alcoholic beer or non alcoholic wine.
Applying the math; if in average 50cc of alcohol are needed to inebriate an adult person (3 bottles of beer or 2 glasses of wine), then to get this amount from non alcoholic beverages you need to drink 10 litres at 0.5% or 50 litres at 0.1% which obviously is a physical impossibility.
So I think that we shouldn't use modern science to complicate our lives. We all know that alcohol is haram, but does that mean because modern science was able to detect minute percentages of alcohol in regular foods that we have been consuming for ages like fruit juices, we should start discussing whether they are haram or not. Or if there is a way at all to eliminate all traces of alcohol by removing the micro organisms present in those foods?
I truly believe it would be a gross exageration... Back in the days of the Prophet (PBUH) I'm sure hygenic standards were not as strict as they are today and fruit juices or any sugary/ starchy solutions they consumed might have contained far higher percentages of alcohol than those present in so called non-alcoholic beverages we are so preoccupying ourselves with.
So my final verdict: No it is not Haram to consume beverages labeled non alcoholic even if they contain a small percentage of alcohol equivalent to that occuring naturally in fruit juices or other foods recognized to be halal.
I hope I haven't shocked or offended any body with my opinion. But this is truly what I consider logic.
You can use the link below to have an idea about percentages of alcohol in different beverages including fruit juice
The second link contains non alcoholic substitutes used in cooking.

it isnt haram , bec there isnt any alcohol in it.
this is written on the can/bottle , so there is no deceit in it.
it isnt imitating what is haram, but just drinking what is halal.
nonalcoholic beer is good for your kidneys and de-hydration.
non alcoholic wine is very delicious , esp with icecream. God has allowed everything that is halal, and when we enjoy it we thank him for His blessings and say, alahum zidni min khairatak.
however, i must say that i never saw anyone drinking any of these when i was on omra or on pilgrimage. people pampered themselves with other items in the Holy places. |

as long as it has no alcohol, then, in my opinion, it is no longer can be called wine or beer. It's simply a drink..
I have no idea why manufacturers of beverages insist on labeling it "non alcoholic beer" or "non alcoholic wine"!? |

OK here's the thing... non alocohlic wine (usually it's non alcoholic champagne, not wine) is not haram.. simply because it does not have any alcohol in it. as a corollary, it does not give u the same "warm feeling" one gets when drinking alcohol..
so, non alcoholic beverages of all kinds are halal.. and its not like the pork flavoured chips i guess (although i never heard of them) because simply they lack the haram factor, a.k.a. alcohol!
so go ahead and drink all non alcoholic champagne u can! but be sure that it doesnt have any alcohol percentage, cause (like i assume u already know) even the smallest percentage is forbidden
and oh, good thing to share bel marra.. i recently discovered that vanilla extract is HARAM because it's alcohol.. vanillin is halal, vanilla extract is not.. here are the links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanilla_extract
http://www.muslimconsumergroup.com/Ingredients.do?menu=Ingredients&eventAction=description
so check them and take care when u buy chocolates (specially from the duty free shops and from the US and Europe) that they don't inclde vanilla extract.
one last thing, about dijoun mustard: in the US they put alcoholic vinigar in it.. in Egypt, this WAS the case: they wrote that it had alcohol in french, but did NOT translate it into arabic.. but NOW they dont write it at all (not even in french) so either they changed how they make it (hich i doubt) or they simply removed the phrase!!!!! so beware |

Whats wrong with the bamya and molokheya?
lol well i think if you use alchohol free beer it will be very healthy, like cleaning the digestive system and so on, but you must make sure that it doesnt ferment and produce alchohol on storage because of the presence of a high level of sugar, though i insist that molokheya is better |

If it isnt haram(which non alcoholic isnt) it isnt haram.
Use it if you want, anything that is halal is HALAL, be happy that if you choose to use it, your not commiting haram. |

You can eat/drink whatever as long as it is permissble to be consumed (no alcohol or meat from carniverous meat; nor anything not slaughtered in a humane way, not invoking other than God's name on it: oh and nothing that died of natural causes)
So yeah, it's fine. We have some in our house..but I think it's GROSS. |

ok dear....
dad drinks non-alcoholic beer...but pork flavored chips???
we are not that desperate to taste pork...why when God has permitted eeeeeeeeeverything except these things...we still want to taste it....
u dnt understand it,we don't miss it......we are not dieing to taste what's forbidden...
every Muslim should avoid suspicious things like that.....
and choose to be in the safe side
edit:
i just found from a friend that even the non-alcoholic beer(like berill ) actually still contains a small amout of alcohol happened during manufacturing process....so it's better to avoid it anyway.... |
