Quick poll: How much do you feel your voice counts in the new South Africa? |
Relating to government issues and policies eg. crime, AIDS, illegal immigration, public services, allocation of your taxes etc.
On a scale of 1 to 10.
1. Very little. I feel that no matter what I say it's not taken seriously because I am European (or just another African voter) and feel that the government treats me as someone who is tainted because I grew up in the Apartheid era or was somehow (in the minds of the government) advantaged by the Apartheid era.
10. 100%. I feel that everything I say is taken serious no matter what my colour or past may be, whether I grew up under Apartheid or was somehow advantaged (in the minds of the government) by it. |

1. With the system of registering in a district (in person) and then voting there a few months later, the government makes it virtually impossible for overseas citizens to vote. That is, of course, a calculated move, since most overseas citizens left due to the ANC's misrule in the first place and would vote against them. |

1.
Speaking generally, i dont feel the govt listens to the ppl. Take renaming for example. They say there are public 'forums' but i get the feeling that not enough ppl were aware of them; they were badly 'advertised' if i can put it that way, and anything wouldve been steamrollerd anyway, in the name of 'transformation'.
How about the letter ,sponsered by FNB who later pulled the idea, to Mbeki about ordinary ppl dealing with crime. I doubt that wouldve been taken too seriously.
The TAC has been making loads of noise for how long now?
Service delivery protests are becoming a regular occurence but what is being done about it?
I could pply go on about how we are being ignored by the public servants that WE (those that voted for the ANC at least) put in place.
Its all very well having the right to freedom of speech, but how about the right to be heard? |

I would say possibly 2. I'm a 19 year old white female and people often accuse me of being racist when they don't actually know anything about me. A man trying to sell me perfume on the side of the road said that the reason I didn't want to buy his perfume is because I am stuck in the Apartheid ways. Doesn't my age give it away? I didn't grow up in Apartheid - its before my time. (Because this is South Africa, the only reason I didn't want to buy his perfume is - J'Dore by Dior costs R700, not the R150 he was asking for. Read between the lines...) |

I will say a 3, because I,m never leaving my country and will probably die hoping for a better SA but it keeps me going.
I have no problems with other races and cultures and have learnt to make the best of my situation. I have a lovely grand-daughter but I,m not sure SA is the place for her to grow up in, considering the high crime involving kids. It's unfortunate. |

For starters white does not equal European- weird question. Secondly, how much your voice counts depends what you do to be heard. You can sit in your back yard complaining about the country and how nothings being done or you can go join a political party, or something else to actually take action. Only then can you really judge what impact your opinion is having on our country. |
