I'm gonna give away my age here, so I might as well go the whole hog. I vaguely remember the days before TV (!!!!). Our family would huddle around the old Pioneer Hifi to listen to some radio shows. Then, when TV was still new, only the "rich" kids' parents had TV (read: not us) and every Tuesday was TV-night. Dad would take me and my sis (in our pajamas) to a friend's house just before six and picked us up again at 8. We looked forward to those 2 hours of TV the whole week! Our first TV was a Blaupunkt that weighed about as much as a piano.
Ja, Haas Das, Wielie Walie (met tannie Elma Potgieter) and Oscar and Knersis were favourites. Then there was another kiddie show that nobody in the world but me seem to remember: The Zoot Rootititoot Show. I'm serious! I remember it like it was yesterday. It was about this psychedelic spider-like character with a wide-rimmed hat...ag, never mind.
Then, much later (in the early 90's) during military service, not the most hardegat corporal could keep our bungalow's troepies away from the TV when it was time for...you guessed it, BRRRRRAKKENJAN! (often the corporal would join us).
By the way, interesting new look, Inno (certainly doesn't look like Liewe Heksie). |

I know all those stories but my favourite storie used to be 'Ballade vir 'n Enkeling'. I know it's quite old but it had a really gripping story line. By the way, it's back by public demand every Friday on SABC 2. I usually go out on a Friday night but I make sure that I don't miss a single episode. I record it! Lol! I guess I like the story cause it reminds me of the good old days. |

Didn't Zoot Rootititoot have a spotted suit?
And what about Bangalory Time with Janice Honeyman?
And never mind TV starting at 3 in the afternoon, I remember when it came on at 6pm. First programme I ever watched on our first Pioneer set was Wielie Walie rolling along on his barrel at 6pm on a Tuesdy night!
Before that on the radio it was Squad Cars, Jet Jungle, The Mind of Tracy Dark, Check your Mate, Test the Team and Father Dear Father. Anyone remember any of those? |
