Should Egypt have "religious police" like Saudi and Iran? |
Everyone here in Egypt complains of the corruption of the Muslim society, due to the influence of the West. Do you think Egypt needs the moral religious police to keep "youthful men and women" from forgetting correct Islamic dress and behavior?
Thanks for your opinion. Additional Details Thanks to the first three answerers...I appreciate your honesty.
I look forward to more answers. It is a fearful thing to have to be "policed" isn't it? |

No, thank you.
Life would be suffocating.
Religion is a personal relationship between a person and God.
No police force should interfere.
It is very private. |

Allah swt says ((ادعو إلى سبيل ربك بالحكمة والموعظة الحسنة))
And (( فمن شاء فليؤمن ومن شاء فلبكفر))
If those are the words of Allah who are we to judge or force his religion on others....
Definitely a NO for me. |

Hell No.. that would be the beginning of the end to the freedom we have in Egypt, people don't need religion to have morals
If you need religion to stop you from killing, you're a killer
If you need religion to encourage you to donate to poor people, you're cheap, because you expect something in return from God

its not a corrupt muslim society, its just a corrupt egyptian society.nothing to do with religion, just egypt.and no thank you we do not need people to tell us what to do or how to behave.we would like our men and women to stay straight (although im not against people who arent straight dont get me wrong) in saudi arabia its a much bigger issue
id also lke to see the guy im going to get married to, before we actually get married
id like to wear what i want , because thats a subjective thing, without anyone judging me
id like to enter mixed malls without people checkin if im a girl or a boy first.
nobody needs to force anything upon anyone because nobody "forgets"
btw its not fearful, its extremely stupid. |

I agree with lovely diamond. You can't have a theocracy and expect it to last long. Look at Israel...they're always in war, everyone's always dying. God should be a personal relationship. |

no because i believe they drive them away from being good muslims and they force them into islam rather than experiencing its greatness with their intention and will. not trying to stereotype, but since many of the girls in saudi arabia were forced to wear those clothes it resulted into them being very bad muslims and doing very bad stuff |

I think to some extent.
I don't know how the most efficient way of taking care of this problem would be handled, but i can say from my opinion if not religious police at least being able to be religious without fear.
Religious people here are constantly worried about the National Security breaking in or arresting them where ever and no one hears anything about them again. (know this happens to many unfortunately).
Security here keeps giving religious people hard times in order to have them shave their beards, stop going to the mosque, stop reading Quran, not attend religious activities, etc...
SO the corruption of the society doesn't necessarily mean that it's the womens fault. Or the mens. Or the police.
It's the people and the government. We all know how corrupt our government is. The police can be easily bribed and laws are meant to be broken. At least in Islam there are MORALS. But everyone is afraid to follow them.
Regarding Esc's post, i'd have to say that he misunderstands what is meant by the western influence. The west has placed so much disgusting images and obscene images in the MAJOR source of propaganda. Media.
Movies from Hollywood and other generally show so much obscenity and opens the minds and hearts to a plague. Because of these, and no God fearing men, you have what you complain of.
Women wearing hijab are less likely to be harassed then women voluntarily showing of their 'skin', 'shape' and 'sexuality'. Because of these western ideas that a women should show off her beauty and the images from movies (regarding certain things that should never be done outside of the bedroom and without one's spouse) you have a major 'bug' in a man's mind.
That 'bug' along with his natural desires and no morals or firm islamic faith leads to the rapes and harassment that leads to the filth we hear about now.
So in summary, i think Islam should be strong again, but not forced upon anyone. Unfortunately Islam is being 'terrorized' and now we live like animals in fear of our government and our 'neighbors'.
REPLY; to Esc, the things you see stick in your mind, whether you know it or not. And if you have ever taken or bothered to know about physiology you know what effect things like this have in playing towards ones behaivors which in turn leads to morals and character to actions....
FYI, dunno why my person life is suddenly so important, but i am a citizen of the USA and was my permanent home until i married and moved.
I don't know how u got culture from, but okay. Guess you wanna say that the culture is reflected from the media, or vice versa? In all cases, I've seen many decent people as well as trashy slutty people. And if you ask them what they watch i bet you it'll definitely reflect that as well as their religious morals and teachings.
my whole point was the images that are fed to the people (esp that of young men) leads them to commit their actions. God-fearing men know better and how to restrain this as Islam teaches via marriage and if they can't afford it then to fast. Put your hatred and anger aside and try to understand.
I never said to turn Egypt to a police states, as i mentioned, Islam should not be forced upon the people (and was never done by our Prophet PBUH and the companions). Therefore this is wrong. But to be living in fear of our government and police is wrong. And the bribes and unsound morals they show is what is leading to our corrupt country.
REPLY2; subhanaAllah! you misunderstand me again. I and not saying that if every women followed the correct hijab the problem will go away. Rather I'm saying if all obscenities are removed from the peoples access then you have a purer society. A clean mind will lead to clean actions/behavior. Along with the gheera (jealousy). If all men stood up to this attack on women, then other men would be less inclined to do such hideous act.
If the police here, and government, were more God-fearing they wouldn't be so corrupt. Rather they fear the positions above them. Like the article said, Mubarak asks Washington what he should do. If this is our president, naturally police will only worry about their superiors and to make sure they survive just fine (bribes).
REPLY 3; lol, you could try that. Might be a big diff, but doubt it'll ever work. So again here is were Islam plays a role, u know part of hijab is lowering the gaze, that's a good start. Stop showing or atleast edit nudity, sexuality, drugs, abuse, etc. Anyway lots of possibilities out there i'm sure, just takes commitment and brainstorming, but i also don't think this is the appropriate place to continue on about it, lol. |

What the hell is wrong with you honeybunch? That hijab finally cut off your circulation?
"... corruption of the Muslim society, due to the influence of the West." ???
The reason 1/3 of Egyptian women say they have never been sexually harassed is the same reason 2% of foreign women say they have never been sexually harassed in Egypt. Sexual harassment is such a problem in Egypt that the British Government says more of its female tourists are raped or molested in Egypt than in any other country and it has to issue a special warning to anyone coming here. This has nothing to do with "the influence of the West," it's plain old hunger for sex. Most Egyptian men are at their sexual prime and they can't afford to pay a dowry and buy an apartment and get married and have children and unless they can pull off the "gawaz 3orfy" stunt they resort to harassing women in the street.
"... forgetting correct Islamic dress..."
Once again, we have a case of someone so brain damaged, they insist it's the woman's fault that she's harassed. "Good girls" don't get any trouble from men do they? Do the math. This is a country where 85% of women are already veiled (that's not to say how many such women wear the niqab with eye slits and black gloves on their hands) and where 70% of women say they are still sexually harassed. In the last major wave of attacks a few months ago even women dressed like ninjas had their clothes torn off by groups of dozens of hound dogs. Surveys carried right here have shown that the hijab doesn't even do all that much to curtail sexual harassment.
And being such an expert on Egyptian social affairs, your solution is to have thousands of bearded bathrobe-wearing police agents clubbing any woman who doesn't cover her whole body apart from her face and hands and any man seen so much as walking beside a non-mehram woman?
This is a problem with the Egyptian men and has jack $hit to do with "Western influence" or "correct Islamic dress," got it? This is a home-grown phenomenon.
Edit - I REPEAT, "disgusting" or "obscene" images we get from Western media (that we allow and that some people in the civilized world call "art" God forbid) have nothing whatsoever to do with sexual harassment. Right now there is a bigger harassment problem in Egypt than there is in any Western country.
And btw Illusion, when you were a guest in Australia or the States to profit from much more money and a far higher standard of living, when did you learn to appreciate their "disgusting" culture?
Sexual harassment of women in Egypt is on the increase and observing Islamic dress code is no deterrent, according to a survey published this week.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7514567.stm
An Egyptian women's organization recently carried out the country's first survey on sexual harassment. The survey found that about 80% of Egyptian women face harassment. One aspect was surprising to outsiders - that dressing conservatively is no protection from harassment.

is your "innovation," keep it to yourself and keep in mind there are enough sensible people in our government and intelligentsia to keep Egypt the hell away from it.
Edit2—I’m not here to discuss abstract psychological theories with you. People have often envisioned simplistic solutions to complex problems, with disastrous results. You look at this and say, oh, if the women covered themselves like walking black bags no one would want them, so that’s the solution. That’s as logical a solution as banning driving because of road accidents, or Communism to solve the problems of poverty. The problem is more complicated than seeing a pretty woman in the street.
You can see the research, carried out by a women’s rights organization right here at home, which shows that the hijab is not a deterrent of sexual harassment.
And while it’s not an appropriate point, people who characterize Western culture as “disgusting,” “obscene,” “propaganda,” or “a plague,” yet have immigrant backgrounds, are rather ironic to me. I’ll be an immigrant myself one day.
Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc, with their council for “the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice,” are police states. If a woman wears a sundress on a hot day, or if a boy walks with a girl who’s not his mother or sister or other relative, they can be arrested. God forbid this should ever happen in Egypt, but that’s where we’re headed.
I know the police here are corrupt, but police corruption is not the problem on sexual harassment. Most women who are harassed don't even report it out of shame. It's the national psychology that a woman who is harassed is at fault herself for "leading the man on" that's the problem.
Edit3--so you're saying ban satellite telivision, fashion magazines, etc? What are you implying? |

very funny ..
that's what we need fanatics roaming the streets beating women who aren't veiled ,lashing people who drink an who have sex without sex contracts "marriage contracts" ,no need to jail people we can simply cut of their hands ,no need to be reasonable no need to use our minds an human knowledge ..we got ancient books claimed to be written by God ..he knows better after all ..
an freedom of speech is a blasphemy ..who needs it anyway ..it's just a principle created by western infidels to guarantee that everyone is entitled his own opinion !!.crazy right ..we don't need that in our society ..all we need is a religious police ..
i think we need an anti-religion police ..
to stop the ancient fairy tales (that's religions an not only islam ..all of them actually) from spreading ..enough with the hatred an the irrationality .. |

it's sad to see so much negativity towards religion, i personally believe the people of egypt are not ready for such an innovation, they need to make their minds pure and stop HATING to begin with. my opinion is that religious police will have a negative effect on egyptians, and people will do wrong just for the sake of rebelling and looking 'cool' as they are breaking a religious law. Sad to see some answers preceding mine, it made me think 'what a shame'.. but yeah long story short; people need to stop hating, think more positively and get educated, and God-Willing Egypt will be a better society :) |
