ok since this has happened to me before I have many solutions for you:

1. try to buy him the same shirt
2. if you can't (cuz it's like an old shirt), then tell him you gave some of his old shirts to charity
3. put the shirt with a new load of washing and ask your daughter to put the load and set it herself...then when the washing comes out you can blame her (always blame it on the kids, they have half his genes)
4. or do 3 but ask your hubby to put the load instead of your kids
5. give it to the dog and let him chew at it...blame the dog
6. just put it in front of him and say: "see what you made me do? it's all your fault I have too much to do and I can't be with my friends online"
7. Let him read my answer and then he can see why you are loosing your marbles

my wife did that once ( many years ago ) till today when i want something hard to get i mention h much i loved that shirt, h much i was emotionally attached to it lol.
it works and things get done hahaha.

but if it was me ...... ill go to his room.... take some money from his cupboard ..... and go buy another shirt that looks exactly the same !!! dont forget.. money from HIS cupboard !!! lol

that way... he would think extra good of you... one = you done the washing and didnt put us first (wish is not true) and two = your washing turns out so clean that it looks like you just bought it !! lol =D

dont worry if he says anything to you just tell him that your gana tell fatma and he will leave you alone !!! (trust me he will get scared that if i start talking i wont stop... kinda like what im doing now... lol im gana stop now )

The best defense here would be a good offense.

Make a huge fuss about something BIG and after it cools down (& he's so glad it cooled) tell him "oh yes, your favourite shirt was ruined".

Well my version is this:

Wash it, Fold it, and stuff it in the summer or winter clothes, (which ever you are not using now)

So if he asks for it, search the whole house and say you didnt find it, then when the other season comes, do the same and stuff that shirt in the summer clothes lets say!!

Do the same thing until he finds it some day, and say, "Yihh 2akid el tyeib 7allu beba3dun"

Dnt tell him lol...just get him a new one or make it up to him with some presents such as a watch or whatever husbands like lol i haven't gotten to that stage yet so dn't know. Although there are some alternatives which have been mentioned above. Lol Goodluck.

just give it to him and tell him it was in the washing cause when you washed it it got a little bit changed
so you sent it and it's as brand as new
but if it doesn't turn as brand as new

It seems I was reading a story from myself !!!
I put his favourite sweater in the washing machine, and without realize I didnt annul the hot water. So, after 1 hour in almost boiling water, when I opened the machine....it was sooooooooooo small !!! lol
I dint tell him anything, but he was looking for it everywhere..He really loved it...he he.. Finally I bought a new one....and after some days I showed the other one to him, but he was calmer then.
Anyways......I had to hear some "nice" things about how I handle the house..hahahahahahahaha..but i replied that was not about to handle the house.....it was about to handle the washing machine !!!!! lol
So, my advice,..you know him better than anyone.....so wait some days and then tell him what happened, after buying a new shirt for him (try that be as much similar to the old one as you can!!) Even, add some kisses and beat your eyelashes...loooooooool
