Regular Joe

Should Israel resettle Gaza?

I am under the opinion if they do this it would decrease the number of rockets fired and provide thousands of Palestinians with jobs. Hundreds of Palestinians have lost their jobs when the settlers were evicted from their land.

Thanks to all great answers and they are great indeed. For the first time so far none of the people showed disrespect to each other. Finally we are able to have a dialog without cussing each other out. Good sign indeed.

Yes.

The motive for dissolving the PA would presumably be a mixture of protest and frustration regarding the lack of progress in the current peace process, the fighting in and around Gaza and the Palestinian Authority's general lack of authority and substance. It could also constitute a response to the advent of serious Israel-Hamas talks regarding a long-term ceasefire that effectively neutralizes Israel-PLO peace talks.

The Palestinian pro-dissolution argument would presumably go as follows: If the PA cannot deliver a viable Palestinian state within the framework of a two-state solution -- the purpose for which it was created under the Oslo accords – then why should it continue to exist?

If the PA has lost control over the Gaza Strip and barely controls Judea and Samaria, why not call a spade a spade and dissolve it? If Israel, in the Palestinian view, is incapable of rolling back its settlement drive in Judea and Samaria, then confront it with the need to renew its occupation and face the consequence: a single-state solution.

But renewed occupation and the specter of a single-state solution are not necessarily what will happen next. For one, the dismissal of the PA's security forces might be the signal for Hamas to try to take over in Judea and Samaria as well. Alternatively, some Palestinian leaders would see this as the appropriate time for a unilateral declaration of Palestinian independence -- replacing autonomy with a state, however virtual.

.

You are fooling yourself the only solution at end is one state for all. Resettling or occupying will not end the Israeli/Palestinian endless conflict. Resettling peacefully is the only way out for all. What Israel is doing so far is a wast of time and wast of lives from both sides.

Gamla Joe
I have to agree with mr_rieux, when peace arrives between Gaza and Israel then economic development and trade can blossom.

I would even suggest that be part of any final peace deal (not a long term cease fire) it might involve Israel helping Gaza build its own port modernizing its sewage and transportation infrastructure, etc.

but Israel is past the point of settling Gaza. Besides there is tons of settlement opportunities in the Negev and even the North.

It would be a very bad idea for Israelis to resettle and occupy territory in area known as Gaza. It would be a major set back for peace and what is happening now in Gaza would not even be an Israeli problem if the rockets being fired from the area were not hitting Israel's sovereign territory. A resettlement of territory by Israeli settlers in Gaza would actually lead to a level of legitimization of the terrorist attacks in the first place.

Good Luck!!!

Israel has already withdrawn and recaptured Gaza 3 times in history...resettling it would provide creature comforts for many, but would incite the jingoists out there who would then call for more blood.

Your just providing them with a justification for violence when you do that.

As someone whos uncle was evicted I agree with you, even those who proclaim themselves staunch supporters of the palestinians cant argue that conditions were'nt better for the people of gaza before 05

mr. roo .JPA.
A terrible idea!

When peace comes, Gazans can find employment opportunities in Israel, as they did before, and Israeli companies may invest in Gaza again. But there is absolutely no sensible reason to establish Israeli settlements in Gaza.

None whatsoever.

==================================

EU Citizen:

You make a good point. Certainly, if Israel, hypothetically, were to annex Gaza all residents should be granted Israeli citizenship.

(BTW, just to be clear, I think it would be a terrible idea to annex Gaza. It is true that there was in the past a substantial Jewish settlement there. But there are no sacred Jewish sites there, and the area is not at all significant to Jewish history or religion.)

However, resettling isn't *necessarily* synonymous with annexation. All resettling means is that Israelis live there. It doesn't mean that Israel establishes sovereignty over it.

I was making a primarily theoretical point.

We are in agreement about the two basic options that Israel has with regard to the West Bank. The present situation is untenable.

==============================

Blue Xull:

You could have, in theory, a situation in which Israelis live in a Gaza under Palestinian sovereignty. Not likely, of course. but possible in an ideal future. So yes, I am talking about them living as immigrants, not as "bullies."

The "single state" solution sounds nice in theory, but we have an example of how it would be likely to work in practice - Lebanon, with its endless sectarian violence, and Yugoslavia, which broke up into religiously/culturally homogeneous areas.
Doesn't seem like an attractive prospect.

==================================

Joe:

Sadly, it looks like you spoke too soon about the level of civility and respect in the answers.....

Blue Xull
Yes and the west bank too, and then there will be one Palestine/Israel with all it's people living in Palestine/Israel. I wouldn't insist on the name but then all Palestinians and Israelis must have equal rights in that country.

Some liberal Jews agree with this opinion (a 'one secular democratic state' solution).

Too impractical I know.

Mr. Rieux, what do you mean by "All resettling means is that Israelis live there. It doesn't mean that Israel establishes sovereignty over it."?
like immigrants? or like bullies?
-Alright then. thanks!

You know how it is, two Jews, three opinions. I wish Israel settled in Gaza again. Besides the economic impact it had for both Israelis and Palistinians, there is a matter of security. When the Palistinians broke through the border to Egypt, a Hamas cell was able to prepare a bomb and enter Israel through the southern open border. The bomb was detonated in Demona killing two and injuring twelve in February. There were also two Palistinian men arrested near the Egyptian border carrying a bomb. I am a Zionist but I don't blame them for being so hostile there- they have been given the land but nothing to thrive, 60% of the population is under 30, without education and ability to earn a stable income. They should have had preperation before they settled. You can't just hand someone land and expect them to know what to do. They argued for it, killed for it, but never prepared for it. I don't blame Israel. I blame Hamas for taking over the PLO. I know there wasn't the best direction before but at least they were trying to negotiate with Israel. Israel will not negotiate with terrorists.

My advice to Palistinian lobbists pushing for land but not telling their people how to work it?

Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.

It sounds a but cruel but they wanted Gaza, now they have it. It is not Israel's problem to fix what they screwed up. Go ask Hamas to employ and feed you.

Witness To Palestine
I am inclined to recall Mo's comment:

CAUSE- A people are unlawfully oppressed and their soil is occupied

EFFECT- These people fight back

and

"With every action, comes an equal and opposite reaction."

Your sense of humor is so amusing, after what happened to the Israeli army in Lebanon I doubt if they can even occupy Tel Aviv without losing, we also saw it in Gaza last month, the first incursion they tried 2 soldiers were killed, I don't think they can risk anything more than air attacks, the Israeli army is so weak with very low morals they cant do much, one thing they are good in is fighting unarmed civilians.
Again this shows the level of hatred and animosity you have in you...you sure sound like a proud terrorist.

It will never happen for one reason Gaza is a cursed piece of land not even Egypt wanted it back even many Arab states dont want anything to do with them exceipt of cource countries like Iran,Syria.they all thrive on chaos.. I feel sorry for those Palestinians who did not vote for Hamas and the destruction of the State Of Israel.

I think that's a bad idea. If you settle Gaza then you are allowing all those terrorists who were shooting the rockets in the first place into Israel. That will give them more freedom in how to attack Israelis. I say Israel just build a dome over them and let them **** their own **** up.

samsproudmommy
totally. i personally was opposed to the pullout, i knew that it would become a hotbead of terrorists. howevwer i was willing to admit i was wrong if all went well. it didnt though, there are still daily rockets. to stop this israel must resettle gaza

Well, let's see... Jews tried to move Jews out of Gaza, and that didn't work. I say, now is a good time to try Arab-free Gaza, and see if that works.
