Should i just take GBP to Egypt?

I am going to Egypt next month for 2 weeks and have been advised by a lot of people to just take English pounds. Should i do this as im worried i will have to change it over in Egypt and the exchange rate wont be good.
Thanks

Gemma

No body used English pounds there. You can go exchange them at the bank if you want.

What are these answers saying you can only get money from the Egyptian airport? Personally I would change up a small amount of GBP into Egyptian at the airport in England for getting food and drinks for first day night you are in EGYPT. . When you arrive in Egypt (presuming you are going Sharm or another tourist destination) you can tip using pound coins, for the porters at the airport or the people who take your cases to your rooms. I would then either use the currency exchange facility at your hotel (or bureau de change in town for slightly better rate) or just withdraw cash as and when you need it from the cash machines.

No coz they dont accept them in the non-tourist areas. Change for Egyptian pounds in any bank or exchange centre before u go. Also, things cost more in English money over there.

When i was in sharm they excepted GBP USD Euros and Egyptian pounds. We only took egyptian pounds (which came in 100 from Thomas Cook) this made it very hard for tipping. in the shops they didnt mind you paying with any currency. and even when you paid in egyptian they quite often tried to give you change in another currency.
I would recommend taking english pounds with you for tipping and then maybe change over some money incase you go to none tourist areas.

Whilst they do not accept GBP as a legal currency for purchasing good in Egypt, in my experience they go crazy for £1 coins when tipping them the obligatory Baksheesh!

I always take a mix of GBP, USD and Egyptian Pounds.

USD is able to exchange in Egypt
Euro is Able to exchange in Egypt
English Pounds is able to exchange in Egypt
and YOU can exchange it everywhere u can go!!!!!

chuckie
They certainly do accept GBP in Egypt. The exchange rate is about £8 Egyptian pounds to one £ sterling. Never exchange at Ports or Airports, they are the worst exchange rates of all.

Most hotels will change your money and there are plenty of banks who will too. I always take some travellers cheques where ever I go.

You will get a slightly better exchange abroad than you will exchanging before you leave.

Every one wants a tip, so small change is essential.

u must change it at egyptian airport i don't think u'll find egyptian pounds in the uk, u can change some & keep the rest either in English pounds or in USD, preferably USD then u can change the amount u need from the hotel u stays in,

while in egypt don't go out with the dollars leave them at yr safe at yr hotel coz if u need to change it will be cheap out side, always argue with the sellers about the prices they tend to give a high price for forigners, when u argue the price or pretened to leave them coz of the price they will offer u better prices

enjoy yr time

I went to Sharm el Sheikh at the end of feb, i exchanged £100 in england before going and got an exchange rate of £1 GBP to £7.3 EGY.

We stayed all inclusive so didn't think we would need much however we ran out toward the end and i just went to a cash machine. I got £8 EGY fot the pound which was loads better. My bank doesn't charge for overseas withdrawals but i would check with yours first if u do this.

We noticed at the hotel they exchanged at £7.6 EGY to the GBP. So the rates were better over there.

Have a great time, wish i was still there!

Hi. The most useful notes to have are the very small denominations which you will only get when you are over there. Go to the bank and insist on small notes. (You need them for tipping) In the mean time take lots of 50p and £1 coins as they are often ggratefullyrreceivedas they exchange them with the tourists for Egyptian money. I prefer to go over there with a small aamountof Egyptian money but you don't need a lot. Have a great time

Hi there,
At the moment it would be better to take Sterling with you, as you would get a better exchange rate out there. I TOTALLY disagree with comment that you CANNOT get Egyptian pounds outside of Egypt, what a load of twaddle. You can get them at any PO in England and at all Thomas Cooks etc but at the PO you do get a bettter rate. You can also change currancy at your Hotel or any Bank near to it at a better rate than in the UK AT THE MOMENT, I should know, I have travelled there for over 30 years!!!! Hotel Staff do prefer being tipped in their currancy, and although they take £1 coins they save them up and ask British Tourists to exchange them for their currancy. USD are also excepted and are popular at the moment as it's a better rate of exchange out there. Hope this helps.
regards

yes take English pounds you will get a far better exchange rate out there than you will here. i have been there many times. Most good hotels have small bank kiosks in the hotels. You can exchange on arrival at the bank kiosks in the airport, though i seem to remember the exchange rate there is not so good as in the hotels. or in banks in town, you can also use maestro and visa cards in the ATM;s though they are not always reliable. But £ travellers cheques or cash will work well. if you take travellers cheques take all the paper work you get from the bank with you sometimes the Egyptian banks want to check it. most banks will not charge commission if they do go else where to find one that does not charge. my last visit was in Oct, in fact i went to Egypt 4 time last year and i am travelling there again in 2 weeks. i only found commission was charged in a few places in sharm. Luxor and Cairo have not previously charged commission

Laura J
i would take english money and travellers cheques and exchange some at the airport. We were there a few years ago at Sharm el sheik and they were asking us for English money in the shops. They get a better exchange rate and thus more for their money! We tipped our cleaner £15 and that was a months wages to him. So the pounds really do go further for them.

Derek M
It's the only way to do it really as you can't get Egyptian pounds outside of egypt. Any other currency you would be changing twice so paying two lots of commission
