Well,if B backs it that seals the deal (*wink*); I think Gamla raises a valid point about the hollow 1988 declaration, but I disagree with his conclusion. He's right and wrong. Obviously what screwed things up in '88 was in fact the lack of territorial control - but that's including the west bank in the package, and they sold out a year ago when they refused to recognize the election results. The Gaza is in control of it's territory, which makes for a very different picture than 1988. This is another good reason to jettison the west bank, along with a lot more I could name. But to answer the question - yes,and as soon as possible. To avoid controversy, slap together an interim secular government with an Acting President to handle to declaration and serve as caretaker authority until an election can be held. (This time there won't be any P.A./Abbas Qisling to question the results); I would recommend the venerable Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and to get super-practical I would ask Lila Khalid to return from exile in G.B. to serve as Acting President. She's an icon to an entire generation of progressives throughout the world, she has international stature and name-recognition; she's a respected academic, she's a woman, she's left wing and she's secular. Perfect for the job. She could fly in through Egypt- like Khomeini returning to Iran from Paris in 1979. Another thing: she is so much a grey eminence within the movement, everyone trusts her. Haniyah would not have to worry about a power grab. Oh God,how I hope the Gaza goes indie -now,and without the west bank. They made their deal with the devil and if they don't like it they can migrate to an independent Palestine. But it must be made clear that de facto acceptance of the current Gaza borders do NOT constitute de jure recognition of their permanence. I would keep that question permanently open - given the long-term goal of a Palestinian state - namely regaining as much of their territory as possible,no matter how long it takes.

they said they may declare a state soon. Israel, america and many others would recognise it and let it be.

You guys really should, I'd back your decision, what more do you need?!

Yes,yes and yes and yes again and absolutely as soon as possible. While those people in Pristina are dancing in the streets the Palestinians are enduring daily assaults by their own version of Bosnian fascist thugs, namely the so-called "zionists". There is a political wrinkle given the split with the P.A. but that can be resolved at the same time. Last night someone mentioned that if George Habish, founder of the respected Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestinian had been around in 2005 and running the show,he would have declared the Gaza an independent Palestinian State IMMEDIATELY upon withdrawal of the jews. It's not too late to go by press accounts. The incursions haven't been that deep so far,but that will intensify. The world responds favorably to ANYONE seeking freedom and independence and the Gaza - unlike the west bank - is the only remaining piece of Palestinian territory currently not under izzy control. As a nucleus for a larger and future Palestinian sate it is ideal, much more so than the west bank since that is land-locked whereas Gaza has a good strip of shoreline - and upon independence that automatically becomes territorial waters - thus ending the jew blockade. I say: go for it. Split from the P.A. and declare an independent state. Do it now. Time is running out.
As to the EU,no,not right anyway; they will yield to U.S. pressure. But every small nation on earth will provide almost immediate recognition and that represents a majority of the U.N. Strength in numbers. When the P.A. issued their nothing-ever-really-came-of-it declaration in 1988 it was at the height of the first Intifada but 78 states still recognized it. Nothing came of it because they were west bank dominated and that is an area under heavy jewish occupation, which the Gaza isn't. If your real lucky the Scandinavian states will recognize and that would be a huge plus in breaking the ice with the EU - which - sooner or later - will break with the U.S. on this. Go for it!

if an independant state of palestine would be respected by israel, and not re-occupied at the drop of a hat.and if all illegal israeli settlers were removed from palestine, otherwise how will it work? and while we are at it, how about dismantling that disgusting Berlin style wall

Galahad
Not the U.S. but the EU would after a period; in the interim most small states would provide immediate recognition. The advantages are too numerous to mention. They would need a "caretaker" interim government not associated with the kassem rockets, etc. And break their ties to the P.A. and the West Bank.

I think; and this is only me going extreme, that it is better for the Palestinians to have one state with Israel, and then we can destroy those Jews from within…
Imagine adding 1.5 Million Palestinian in Gaza with 1 Million more from the west bank to the already 1.5 Million inside Palestine 48, you will get 4 Million Palestinian verses 4 Million Jews right away; and sharing the Jews living under the benefit of the American taxpayer…with time the proportion of the Palestinians will grow to reach more than 75% to 25% by a hundred year, then the Palestinians can revolt for their fair share of control over the country and afterwards the sky is the limit…They can claim back all of Palestine...

Who cares about the U.S and the U.E.? That's not the whole world, although they seem to think so. The vast majority of so-called "third world" nations would immediately recognize it,as would Russian and possibly Scandanavia. They don't have much time left though. They should have done it in '05 but I suppose they still have the encumbrance of ties to the west bank. But that's over now, since the two governments have split already.

Israel would let it be if rockets weren't being fired from Palestine. However, this situation is a little different. I completely support the establishment of a Palestinian state as long as it brings peace!

The States and the EU wouldn't care as well.... as long as there is peace. There is never any problems when there is peace... but for some reason some people just don't want peace. :(

A lot of questions about us today!
yes and no.
I think that the Palestinians have the right to have their own state but at the same time one has to make sure that the state will not be a solution for the issue not just a temporary satisfying offer. What I mean is that if the Palestinians get a Palestinian state, they should stop asking the Israelis for more. At the same time, the Israelis should stop trying to occupy people's lands. The Israelis have to make sure that hamas doesn't use the state as a base for their terror and the Palestinians have to make sure that the Israelis will not reoccupy the state.

I am Palestinian
Peace

Zeno, your suggestion regarding Ms. Khalid certainly fired my imagination and given that, I think it is possible that Leftists,Progressives and Liberals all over the world might have the same reaction. Another point: she precedes the era of suicide bombers and so on. What a splash she would make with the international media. Lila Khalid - wow.
To respond to the question - yes, absolutely, what have you got to lose? Nothing,so it's worth a serious try. If the Gaza doesn't,they go under jewish occupation. Even if they do,they might - but they wouldn't have lost anything and it would still seriously complicate matters for the enemy. I do agree with some of the postings emphasizing separation from the West Bank and the P.A. They've done themselves dirty and in the process messed up the leadership question in Gaza, which has been a major handicap since the election. Let them go,tell them they're on their own. They have their Abbas. I would support the interim government concept as absolutely essential - many small countries would hesitate to provide recognition if it automatically implies recognition of Hamas. The U.N. considers it a "terrorist' group; their authority is subject to question; new elections need to be held - certainly an "untainted by all this" interim government is to be recommended. Most of all it has to be presented to the world as a fait accompli - no turning back,if the izzies attack,it's an international situation, not "internal security". I say yes a thousand times.

No way Jose.

there are so many differences this is not a good comparison.
To me the main one is that Kosovo folks aren't starting out talking war but peace.
They aren't the kind that sleep with guns and rockets under their bed. No suicide fanatics.
The first thing Pal would have to do is give up their weapons. Now do you see that happening in Gaza?
I would like to see Israel declare the land to Pal and then shut off all relations and trade and let them find their own way. Maybe then the Arabs of the world would step up and help them out. They sure aren't now.

I wish the Palestinians would get their own state...

This way Israel can say "the very 1st stray missle that leaves your country into ours will bring on a full scale war" - and it ends once and for all

This way people like you will have to say "c'mon Palestinians who have your own land, no reason for anymore stray missles" and it would force groups like HAMAS & FATAH and all the other Brigade groups to end their suicide bombings in places where no Israel military are present...

Let's face it - in '47-'48 when the Jews came to town (on British owned land, let's not forget) the Palestinians had 2 choices: Welcome their semite brothers with open arms OR wage war. - Looks like they've made the wrong decisions for the last 60 years, but then again they put their trust in terrorists to run their lives....

Maybe they can pretend to have their own land, like how they pretend to be hurt like they do in the link below - ENJOY

1-they should have done it long time ago..but the Palestinian movement lacks strong leadership.
2- the EU would not back them!! for many reasons
3- there is no sense to talk about the 3rd one! as the situation is out of their control ...

Gamla Joe
There are two main differences between Kosovo and the Palestinians.

1. Unlike Serbia Israel is willing and wants the Palestinians to have a stable independent state, every Israeli PM for the last 20 years has said so.

2. Unlike Kosovo there are serious disputes over the borders of the state in question. Such issues will not be resolved with a declaration.

On a historical note the PLO declared a state of Palestine in 1988 the move was largely symbolic because they had no physical control of the territory in question. The same is true today. Without an agreement it is only words on paper.
