of course they should! My children as well and many other children are going to be in the hands of these teachers for years. Now, a parent generally does a lot of research on a childs day care provider, right? Well, a parent is leaving this job to the school probably because it's the schools decision to hire this person and we can't just pick any random teacher off the streets to come teach at the school closest to our house. So yes, the schools should do exams and background checks and reference checks and everything else a parents might want to make them feel more comfortable with the teachers in the particular school their child must attend...and I say must because they aren't allowed to go to schools outside of their district.

ay.
its always being like that, and not a bad idea. some times its called promotional exams, all professions have similar stuffs

I work for a school district and teachers are evaluated (slightly) on how their students perform. I think that's fair.

Absolutely, they should have to demonstrate their competence to teach the subject - but then teaching ability should also be assessed.

I think its completely fair to test the teachers

Is this happening in Egypt now?
You're a bit vague in asking the question. What are the specifics?
What types of exams?
What material would be covered?
Is teaching methodology part of the exam?
Who would evaluate the exams? The federal government? State?
You need to be more specific.

Actually i used to be familiar to the European and american systems ..that's there is nothing in Evaluating Teachers ..It is so normal......but we the eleves or the students who do so...but that should be a "Straight line system"...In other words....NOT Just once and finito....and actually here in egypt ..The Education level varies from one to another....So if u r talking about applying that thingie in egypt...In ma opinion it is not FAIR at all....
U know something ?!!!!
Day by day ...It proves to me that the absence of logic is really a CURSE

what a big question which should be answered by professionals as well
its also the system should be evaluated
i would not talk about teaching in Egypt but the worst thing which might happen to a country to be occupied and this certain occupier put himself in charge of choosing the teachers and the directors ..........
people outside in the big globe thinks that fight and struggle is connected with those who belong to groups in resistance who carried the guns .but that is were all goes wrong
its a fight and a big one is going on in teaching and i suppose in many cases we are loosing in this field especially if the head of department that is chose to lead the education process is ignorant or having no good characters or not a productive person and sure this happened through out the passed 40 years and i would not say that happened randomly it was planned
direct to your question teachers exams and evaluation could be some of humiliation and have no positive effect but
1 to choose teachers according to qualifications
2 courses to teachers which updates them and give them methods and information
through out these courses you can do the evaluation and the redirection as well as this can help in classification and knowing the gifted teacher in order of allowing them of more essential rolls in the education process
i can write to you till tomorrow but i suppose this is good to give ideas
add
one method i used
put a video camera in the class covers the classroom then to set with teachers watching the performance
that had helped on the wide scale of school were you can see the good points and weak points
another method i had used was to bring some of those who gives lectures and practice for teaching aids and how you can put a meaning which from some raw materials you can make some fantastic artwork for a teacher and student
some third thing i used to do is to have a sort of workshop for teachers that they can stay doing their work
another method i used is" walls teaching" having the school as a museum
as well i tried the method of open teaching in which i had the help of local graduates volunteers through which i managed to have students are free to study and proceed in lesson after another with none stop if he has got the ability so student can go in mathematics years forward and in physics for instance he can have experiments within small groups and reports is to be written and directed with the volunteers that enable guidance for small groups not a whole class
none stop........................

If you mean the exams that the students take, I totally disagree, unless you evaluate the students from year to year to see what progress they made in class.

Most exams just take a snapshot, so maybe Joey can only answer 43 % of the questions correctly, and so he fails miserably, but at the beginning of the year he could only have answered 28% correct. Johnny in another school can answer 83% correctly, but at the beginning of the year he could have already answered 81% correctly. You tell me who was the better teacher. But that is not what the results of the test will show.

I think it's crazy!

I took a teaching cycle, in order to get my license. Every class, they teach has a mantra: don´t teach to the test...standardized testing is bad. Don´t push standardized testing....etc.

Yet, the first thing they do is start telling you how you have to take these four, half day, massively expensive standardized tests!

And the biggest and most important part of the school year is this massive two-week testing period for kids in about four or five grades! The entire basis of evaluating how the schools are doing (and, I must say, it's really poor in this state) is these state standardized tests!

I must say, as a Spanish teacher, having to review and relearn Algebra...pretty much a waste of time, except that I needed it to pass this stupid test! I have no other need to prove my knowledge of Biology, except for this stupid test!

I guess, you could extract that I disagree with testing teachers.
