Should this apply to all of us?

Should we all have to provide links for 'facts' rather than just stating opinion as evidence?

I'm sure we're all guilty of doing this, Jews and Muslims alike. What do you all think of making this an unofficial 'rule' of our section here?

PLEASE NOTE: I suggest this in the hope that it will enable better debate and less wild accusations flying around.

What do you reckon?
Additional Details
No offence meant at all, but I was directing the question to the Muslims, Jews and Christians who are regulars here; we are having a lot of arguments and people are claiming things that are just not true.
There's nothing 'complicated' about what I suggest, as one of you has said. It's only like that if someone is lying, which has happened in this forum.

I don't always have a link for knowledge I've presented, but will try to reference a source to the best of my ability to support what I've said. I think that whenever possible, references that can be verified should be used, especially if you are claiming that such data exists somewhere.

I also tell someone when words I post are not my own and come from another. This week I've seen my own words given as answer from others, I've seen my friend Rabbi Federow's words plagiarised and on another question of yours about Jewish genetics, one of your respondents I cold busted plagiarising his answer stating it was his reply from information given to him by two friends, when it was a direct copy-paste from a blog.
I only "Googled" it because the vocabulary of the response was incongruent with vocabulary I had previously seen posted from that respondent.

Plagiarism is a violation of community guidelines and even if what you have copied supports your position and nails it as true..by using deception to present it, your integrity is shattered.

I reckon that if we want to make "rules" we could all start by following those already in place!
Plagiarism can get one expelled from a university, it is a no-brainer that it shouldn't be condoned in a question and answer forum, IMHO.

I enjoy learning from others and I also try to share what I learn with others.

Shalom

Of course we should. We're all entitled to our own opinions, but we're not entitled to our own "facts".

I'm Jewish - and I'm bored with all this political rubbish.

How about everybody getting together and going out for a few beers?

Sounds much nicer.

Gobilina
I never do links, I just give my opinion per moment per question and that's all folks

when it comes to religion, it's very touchy.

spReez
Great idea. I think I'll just type the link for the whole Bible, otherwise, I'll be just repeating what it says. It will be easier that way.

Mrs Robinson 2 B
no i like to express my opinoin as does alot of other ppl

Kojak
Links do not increase validity. It is beneficial to know the writers source but a link does not, in and of itself, prove anything. I was in Beirut when the 214 sleeping Marines were slaughtered.....How do I link that. I worked for the Shah of Iran and know the region well.....How do I link that.
The validity of a statement is contingent upon the verifiable facts it contains and common sense logic.
Rants filled with personal bias and prejudice revel themselves quickly.
Example: The general consensus is that there were no WMD's in Iraq. How do you account for the 101st AAD finding gallons of WMD's dumped into the Euphrates River when they entered Baghdad. Huge drums of poisonous WMD's were dumped in the river in vain attempt to hide it.
When you think about the fact it only takes one small coke can of Sarin to kill hundreds of people......That was a significant discovery.
BTW The war in Iraq is VERY much connected to the survival of Israel. If Iran gains control of Iraq through its Shiite ties.....It will put Israel at the mercy of it's greatest enemy. I see Tel Aviv as a greater nuclear target than Los Angeles.

live and let live
Links for facts is real good.

I think that there should be a rule, but that it should apply to examples, not opinions.

A person should not need to cite references for a claim that "Israelis commit violence," "Palestinians commit violence," and "The Middle East is in turmoil." Common knowledge or current events do not require citation.

However, when a person begins to make up atrocities, or to claim that all Israelis are bad people, or all Palestinians are bad people, or that something was 100% one side's fault, then YES. I have seen too many people make claims that cannot be substantiated.

This sheds light on a deeper issue; many times in this forum, people make one-sided claims, or seem insistent that their side is right and the other side is wrong. Perhaps the call for facts should indicate that we would all do well to learn more about the "other:" Start reding al jazeera, or iran daily, or ha'aretz, or yedioth. Start researching the sources for your feelings, and start understanding that lies and propaganda exist. No one is 100 percent right or wrong, and we would all do well to learn from one another.

I reckon its a game of two halves. I dont think this should be an option, it leaves it wide open for more antaganistic attacks

I think it limits personal opinions. Take the intelligent and well informed answers and investigate for yourself and take the sheerly opininated answers for what there worth, opinions. Most knowledge though comes from life experiences.

your suggestion is too complicated

Why should we have to do this? That would be another step towards censorship. Let the extremists, the uninformed and the loonies have their say too.

For B, so far you are the only person who is being verbally abusive. Interesting.

Paperback first stop saying that I blocked you because I removed you from my block list just a few hours after I have added you to it. You are funny you answered my question (which means that you are not blocked) and then you posted this question saying that I blocked you.

Second, I can accept your suggestion about stating facts not opinions but can you do that?
I believe the facts you provide are different from the facts we provide. So, let's say I provide some facts regarding the issue in the middle east, if you don't like these facts you will call it a biased opinion. Similarly, we don't believe everything you call facts. Then a word fight will arise and you will start:
Edit at Mimi,
Edit at hopeless
Edit at B
Edit at Mark
Edit at DAMAN
Edit at Eu Citizen
and you will fill the page with edits as usual so I don't think what you are suggesting will work.

Peace

Paperback,
for the tenth time I tell you that I didn't block you because I don't agree with your opinion.I blocked you because you keep commenting about my posts. It's you who does that not me. DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO WHEN I SAID THAT I LOVE HIZBOLLAH WHAT YOU SAID TO ME?
YOU HAD A BIG WANRING TO ME AND EU CITIZEN SAYING THAT IF WE ANSWER YOUR QUESTION AND TELL OUR OPINION ABOUT HIZBOLLAH YOU WOULD BLOCK US BOTH.
So, YOU ARE the one who blocks people for disagreeing with you. You took my word as an opportunity to prove the opposite and you are trying to act as an innocent now. I am sure if I didn't block you, you would block me. But you want to show the others that you are a good person and you never block people for disagreeing with you even if they have asked you to do so.

diana
i disagree, I have my own opinion I will speak out. you can agree or disagree. but if I want to prove anything, yes I can provide a link.

You're a miserable excuse for a human being, B, decent or undecent.
