Commander MJ

Should we bring back corporal punishment?

Was corporal punishment a good thing in schools in order to teach discipline?
I have noticed when there was corporal punishment and the death penalty, when the school nurse could give you six of the best and the police didn't bother charging a skollie they just gave him a couple of klappe and sent him home to his ma we "seemed" to have a less violent society. Now we are all so pre-occupied with the rights of the individual that we haven't got this anymore and the kids these days are doing hard drugs and shooting each other.
Here in London there has been a lot of violent gang killings and they talking about one gang having 2500 members, guns, cocaine and crack and commanding whole areas of London.
Any thoughts? Spare the rod and spoil the boy?

I agree with you, I would like to see it brought back to some places for a trial and see what the results show!

Finally you are making absolute sense.
Definitely, corporal punishment should be returned, especially in South Africa and the U.K. where the symptoms of its removal are evident accross society.
It was not so much about the punishment itself, more about the ideals it instilled in the youth, they were taught that actions have consequences, and that trained pattern of thought was always at the back of our minds and carried over in their daily lives thereafter.
I had many "hidings" in school and personally, I believe they helped build character.

styviesblu
Well, im not too sure about doing it at school; it can be abused quite badly, not to mention that it could lead to an anti-authoritarian mindset, which i think we've got enough of in this country.
I was thinking, however, of public floggings. Bring out all these skollies to the town square, strap them up, drop trou, and get the biggest cop you can find to give them several hundred of his finest lashes (with a thin studded strip of leather). Surely the humilitaion factor alone should be enough of a deterent? The way i see thugs, they might laugh at imprisonment or even the death penalty, but i think if you severly damage their egos would go much farther than threatening those other punishments.
I think we should also bring back the death penalty, but i dont think it should be as public...

Angua
what concerns me is that some people in authority will always abuse this form of punishment.

A cuff around the ear really isn't going to harm any child and may well make them see that you can't just have what you want, when you want it and that some behaviour is unacceptable, which is sadly lacking in society.

Too many people are too willing to demand 'payment' for a child 'assaulted' by someone who is perfectly within their rights to stop anti social behaviour.

If I played up as a kid, and I did often, I knew that I was looking to get a slap, either from the person in question or a slap from my mum for back chatting in the first place! ( and my mum was scary when she wanted to be). Kids aren't allowed to be children in the respect of finding out about life themselves and trying to survive the 'playground' of growing up.
Some parents believe that confrontation with someone who has spoken up against their vile offspring is a sign of good parenting. Which just shows the offending child that "it's ok to do what you want because i'll be there to stop you being told off".

We saw what was happening in London 15 years ago and it took us two years to save up and move.

After trawling through mountains of absolute rubbish posted by you MJ, I cannot beleive that I am actually going to agree with something you say without reservation. It just goes to show that if we search long enough and try hard enough we will always find common ground somewhere. Maybe thats a lesson you could take back to SA.

chickyboo222
Innocent has got a good point. How can we stop the teachers from going to far? just now they beat the crap out of some kid just because they are white/black? But I want the death penalty back. That would make the world of difference to SA.

Snorkie
well Mj no matter what everybody say.........it worked. My brother always rather wanted 6 of the best than to sit in detention for hours writing out verses from the Bible/dictionary. And it is true, some of the young criminals just need a good snotklap or two, but now they are send to jail were they really become hardened criminals..........but it will never happen it is unconstitutional. All a lot of Bollie!

To a degree I dont mind it, but the thought of someone else hitting my baby when I dont...?

Its difficult because you cant decide for others. Some parents would rather discipline their kids as they feel. Some teachers used to take it way too much and end up hurting the kids seriously.

I'd say no, but still bearing in mind that its difficult to manage some kids as they trully are unrully due to most of these laws.

I'm most definately in support of a caning here & there.

I think we should also for vigilante neighbour hood watch shemes.

Taekwondo grannies & tazer-brandishing yummie mummies would most certainly help make the streets a safer place to be x

What a pleasure to finally find something other than a VolkStaat to agree on.
Yes bring back corporal punishment, give the schools the authority to teach once again, weed out the slackers and permit the students who are serious about learning to learn.
At Pretoria Boys High the headmaster would only permit six cuts, accross the asss, per day to be administered by a teacher or the Head or Deputy head, on a student, at one time I was so naughty at school that I was booked up until a week wednesday, that was eventually commuted to about a thousand years detention, because they thought that I liked it when infact I just didn't want to give them the satisfaction of knowing how much it hurt, I used to laugh after every cut and then thank the teacher for it afterwards.
After that I made sure that I never gave them an excuse to beat me again.
As for the death sentence, yes definately, take out of society those people who commit horrendous act of violence against the defensless.
Murder, child rape, extreme violence against children, violent rape against women violence against old people and anyone selling addictive drugs to the young , these are the people that must be taken out of society.
criminals who commit these crimes should forfeit their own rights and should be treated as such, the victims should have the law on their side not these criminals

Duisend-poot
AISCCHHH don't use my dogs name in vain , his name is Skollie. But yes, i believe corporal punishment should be brought back. I got the hidings of my life and i am still alive . And my gran used to say bend the tree while it is still young.:)

crazyirishnuttah
Couldn'y agree more with you, need to start putting fear into them.

they seem to know the law better than alot of other people so that needs to be change so they can't say its a violation of thier human rights which is rubbish that isn't what its meant for.

Think they should have ex-sas patrolling the streets as there some of the toughest around who wouldn't take no rubbish from a plastic gangster.

should bring back the guardian angels for the public transport make people feel safer.

Eish, ,my brother, now you're talking! I was watching an episode of Supernanny last night. The 5 year old was kicking the mother in the stomach and I thought, all that child needs is to have her bottom warmed!

Yeah... Some people can't listen with their ears, so they have to 'listen' with other places... lol

History seems to show that physical/corporal punishment tends to be more effective... problem is, like others mentioned, it tends to be taken too far by people that don't know how to use it. Everyone's definition of punishment is different. i.e. when you were a kid, and your sibling told on you for hitting them, your classic reply would have to be "What? I barely touched 'em!"

When you've done something wrong, a true punishment helps to clear your head of guilt and therefore hopefully prevent repeating the offence. I think many people keep on commiting crimes because they feel bad about what they have already done...

Just a thought...

I was given hidings at home and at school. The problem is that some people get seriously 'carried away' and don’t know where to draw the line. Where IS the line? Some children were spanked and some seriously abused. I remember a matron hitting both my hands a few times, with full force, using a huge wooden bat. Both of my little hands split open and blood spouted out. She did not blink an eyelid. I was in grade one for crying out loud!
I have nothing against the 'pap lepel' per se but there is no way of controlling corporal punishment. Even the church and police turned a blind eye and/or even used corporal punishment in those days. I know many polite and respectful people that never saw a strap during their entire childhood. I also know many people that have gone completely off the rails that grew up in a home where corporal punishment was the norm. AND VISA VERSA. That can not be the reason for crime and drugs.
Let’s not go backwards. Let’s remain civilised and refrain from teaching our children that physical punishment solves problems. Times have changed. Parents can't spend enough time with their children. They are all working like hell to provide for the family and its future. The catch 22 is that they don't have the chance to help build the characters of their children. THERE lies the main problem. Most children are being raised by one another today, and not by their parents.

cheri
Yes we should bring back corporal punishment it is the only way to learn kids respect and discipline, the death penalty as well and introduce reading from the Bible in the morning back in the schools again

dave
Its nothing new; There has always been gang violence. Take the Krays as just one example.
Violent crime has decreased over the last fifteen years. Sensationalised reporting has increased.

I was in a gang in the seventies, My father was in a gang in the forties, my grandfather fought in France during the First World War at the age of seventeen. If he wasn't shooting people for his country, he would probably have been in a gang.

We all say "It wasn't like that in my day"
Actually it was.

I do enjoy your questions, just sort out that letter A pronunciation thing.

I do think that something has to be done to ensure discipline at school but I am wary of corporal punishment. If it is done fairly and is monitored it might work, however, I don’t think it is really viable anymore. Society is too litigious, teachers, schools the education department etc would be forever locked in court battles. Some parents don’t believe in it and if they refuse to discipline their children I don’t think they would let other people do it either – even if it was allowed. I also think that it would only work if there is a monitoring system in place to ensure that it is not abused. In primary school the nuns saw to it that we got our “pudding” if we were naughty and I think that some of them enjoyed it far too much (bunch of sadists). Boy schools had it far worse. The most effective punishment my brother had to do was community service at an old age home for a weekend. He behaved for quite a while after that because it cut in on his fun time and it was hard work (he built a small wall and did some gardening). He thought six-of-the-best was a bit of a joke, by the time it was over he probably would have planned his next prank.

As far as the death penalty goes if it fits the crime I’m all for it. Jails are full enough and I don’t think that it is fair on law-abiding citizens that the government is not harsher on criminals. Releasing known dangerous offenders back into society is a crime in itself.

Wonderstar
Lol MJ I will share something with you,My stepfather never hit us,but the worse punishment was when he sat you down and tell you what a bad deed you have done, hell he will not scream at you but he will point out excatley what you have done wrong, and believe you me in the end of the day you'll rather have that hiding,I hated it when my Mom told us no hiding, but wait till your Father gets back,I hated those words, but I don't regret the advice he gave us.xxxx

Pammie
No,

Violence is not the answer.

Evil system for an evil era. Those reprobates need to emigrate to Australia, mate.

Leo
Having been on the receiving end of corporal punishment from the cane on the hands and rulers across the knuckles it has done little to change my view on the brutality of those who administer it. An example is that because it did not get good results in a spelling test i got 6 stokes of the cane on both hands. Or the time i was i five minutes late for class even thought i was with another teacher it still did not spare me the 6 strokes of the cane and this time it cut my plam. So no it does not instill discipline but shows that those who are in power will abuse it
