"The general feeling among South Africans is doom and gloom based on various facts and perceptions. South Africa is the crime, murder and Aids capital of the world. It used to have the best roads and now they are full of potholes.
There seem to be only fraudsters at the top of the police force. The country's leadership under Mbeki is rudderless. The head of the ruling party is up on corruption charges. "
"It is wiser to ask: What awaits me if I leave? Unquestionably there are challenges in South Africa, but you are living in a fantasy if you think there won't be a new set of challenges and drawbacks when you move to another country."
"The challenges in this country, like the power shortage, will also birth more opportunities. New enterprises will blossom as a result. Out of crisis always emerge the greatest leaders. "
Do you agree with this article? What is your opinion? Additional Details My opinion? Well I have made it very clear. I am going. This is no life for me. Im sure I could make so much more money here than anywhere else, but thats only because I rape the country. But my money will mean nothing when I get help up and killed. When the exchange rate falls so low thats bags of cash wont even equal a $100 bill. You can try and be an optimist. But do you really think things are going to get better? If you do then you are fooling your self. Take a look around. The African continent is in shambles. Id rather be in a 1st world country and have those sort of challenges, than have the challenge of fighting for my life. |

This is such a personal question...
It is true that there are lots of opportunities that are coming (and you, Chicky especially with your high IQ, you'd do great as an engineer - since there are so many that's leaving! ;-) )
Personally, I am going. Purely because I don't see a future for my children. It is not safe for them to do the things that I did when I was a kid. (They can't even ride their bikes in the street in front of our house.)
But my decision is not just based on the high crime rate, there are other factors as well. The lack of basic services, the rand that is getting weaker, the energy crisis... If you think about it, what's going to happen if the mines close and 100's of 1000's of people are going to loose their jobs (crime is going to sky-rocket!) I don't want to be a gloom-prophet, it's just that I don't see how this can be fixed, not by a black OR a white or any other (rainbow-)government! |

Definitely time to go.
What most do not realise is that this so called "difficult period" is actually only the beginning stage of a total economic collapse leading to poverty, violence and third world anarchy.
It clearly parrallels the events that led to Zimbabwes economic and moral collapse and in fact I believe we may be slightly ahead.
The truly demanding and difficult years that lie ahead will require great fortitude by the civilised South Africans who cannot leave and I feel true sorrow for my countrymen who will suffer under such inept criminals and savages.
Naila - The land has been given back to the colonised, many years ago in fact, does that not seem obvious to you when looking at the absolute disaster Africa has become under African rule? Keep your ignorant liberal dogma to yourself, you obviously have no knowledge on the subject and have made an absolute idiot of yourself, although I'm certain that happens alot with you. |

LEAVE AND LEAVE QUICKLY, DONT GET ME WRONG I LOVE SA. BUT THERE IS NO HOPE REALLY, IT MIGHT BE HARD TO LEAVE THIS COUNTRY, BUT LIKE MYSELF, YOU WILL MAKE IT, AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET LEAVING SA. IT WILL BE DIFFICULT IN THE BEGINNING BUT AS TIME GOES AND YOU START ROOTS ELSEWHERE YOU WILL SEE THAT IT WAS WORTHWHILE. RATHER LIVE ELSEWHERE WITH LESS AND PEACE OF MIND THAN IN SA WITH MORE AND DEAL WITH MURDER, RAPE AND CORRUPTION, ON A DAILY BASIS. |

I live in SA and I am leaving in a few months.
ASAP.
I can't stand it anymore, power failure, racism against white people.
And then they still want 2010 to happen? Yeah right.
Government is full of criminals.
Government doesn't care.
No one wants to take responsiblity for their actions or mistakes. WTF?
I'm going to England.
Hopefully I'll stay there. |

If I were in the same situation as you then I would definitely leave and make a new life somewhere else. You have spoken from the heart and I can tell that you still love your country but hate where it is going. Time to move on. |

I have already read far too many "Alice in Wonderland" articles like this to take any notice.
To quote him: "Crime is an issue that needs to be tackled in a much larger forum than this. However, I will go as far as saying that when there is a high polarity between the haves and the have-nots, there will always be tension between the two camps and crime is the byproduct."
How many times have we discussed on this forum whether rape and murder are crimes of poverty?
South Africa is one of the only countries in the world where people get villainized for wanting to leave?!
In other countries your friends and family celebrate with you, wish you all the best and shed a tear.
In South African it's common to be ostracized by friends and called a traitor or racist by the government?!! WTF? |

Of course you have the right to go and look for happiness anywhere else. Especially if you obviously do not feel welcome or safe in your own country. Maybe the country will get better finally, but it seems it has a long way to go. Also seems someone else has the responsibility right now, not people like you. They will probably do it, but while they are working on it, you can have a life somewhere else. Good luck!
To Naila: Great idea - in this line of thought, why don't you all leave the USA and leave the land to the small number of native Americans, who have survived since the first Thanksgiving day? |

Read the article.Typical jingoism from a Septic Tank who sees an opportunity to make money by addressing people's fears or to put it another way -reality. Nowhere does he offer anything tangible. Only the dreams of the deluded PC Liberals who are in denial World wide about reality. Look at the Archbishop of Cunterbury for the latest in delusion here in the UK.He wants elements of Sharia Law introduced here. This is what the dope smoking "make love not War" 60's spawned and this Septic fits straight into that category. Why doesnt he put his money where his mouth is and move lock stock and barrel to South Africa instead of opening a box number and claiming he has a "branch" there. And these "great Leaders" have already emerged. Zuma, the shower taking Rapist singing for his Machine Gun and defrauding the Country at every opportunity.
Rather rely on factual information instead of grasping at straws from a money grabbing Septic. Once he has your "course attendance" fee he will tell you anything you want to hear and continue the delusion.Read this:

Phlatnose has phucked South Africa as he did to the rest of the African Continent so if you want to stick around to be murdered and raped then stay.

if you have important skills then Australia America and Canada are your ideal new country. if you are semi-skilled most of Europe could be your haven but to have no skills and perhaps not too pushed wanting to work, then the UK is for you. good luck in your new country. |

You should go Chicky cause there's definitely a better life out there but I'm staying cause I'm not leaving my family behind. I think we must all leave so that they can destroy each other but then guess who must come back and safe the day and clean up the mess? Jip, the poor whiteys. How sad is that? I feel so sorry for this once beautiful country. Anyway, good luck and I wish you all the best. |

I left SA 6 years ago and while it has been the right move I still miss certain things - the weather the most. Winter days in the UK are dark, wet, cold and miserable - come to think of it the summer was a bit like that too :-). Think before you move anywhere - what do you want? What country, what standard of life? The UK may be a 1st world country but medical is 3rd world.
I listen to my mother and I worry for her, so far they haven't been physically hurt but she's given up counting the break ins. She couldn't live in the UK its too expensive.
Sure there is crime everywhere, fraud and corruption, silly politicians and church leaders (Canterbury anyone?) but here they do try to do something about it and you're not called all sorts when you do voice an opinion. There is electricity too - expensive but we have it.
Go with your heart and if you feel that you must leave do so. Remember there are many Saffers who have set up shops in other countries and when the lure of Boerewors and Biltong gets too much you can still get it. |

I want to leave as well, but one thing is for sure, and that is that it won't be New Zealand. They seem to have as many problems: unemployment, racism, etc. I'd love to go to Oz, but we are too old. Any suggestions? The disbanding of the Scorpions is probably the final nail in the coffin of crime. Brilliant answer, Eve! |

If you have the finances ....go!
What awaits you in another country is safety and a brighter future, unless you are eighty five. Believe me I wouldn't even visit a country with the problems SA has, never mind live there. The grass is greener on the other side.
Don't be the last one out or you'll have to switch the lights off. |

I used to think like that, but after living in Italy and Britain I can't wait for the chance to go home. The violence is bad, I admit but here the grass seems greener but you can never actually afford to graze on it. The people are unfriendly and superficial as well as snobbish about your accent and the economies are falsely inflated on credt- they seem rich but they owe their lives to the credit card companies and the banks. I am not insulting all Europeans, there are good and bad everywhere- but haven't you noticed how many Saffas miss SA and would love to come home? |

I never wanted to leave SA. My hubby came home one day told me had resigned his job and that we were moving to Uk. I cried and refused to leave. He left got himself a lousy job in Uk came back to SA to fetch me and i missed him so much i moved here as well. 8 years now that i have lived here and still miss SA so much.
Things that have happened since we have moved here, we have bought an ex-council house, tiny yard but big enough for the two of us. We walk every single day in the forest across the road from us, have met lovely people with their dogs and love this way of life. Have been to Scotland, Wales and lots of other places in the Uk that most English people have not even seen yet, I was shocked that most of the people we have met have not even been to London, yet, not that it is a big deal.
My sister and her husband moved here as well same time as us they live 500 miles away from us. Her hubby has been in Hospital now for 8 months with Cancer, he gets the best treatment, does not pay for a single thing and that we are so grateful for. In South-Africa they would not have been able to treat him for this long and they would have had to get deep into dept to pay the hospital fees.
My Brother-in-law have been attacked twice , he is now squint in one eye and the police who supposedly helped him stole the money he had in his pocket. My parents live on a farm now , my mom has been attacked luckily she survived. My brothers home has been broken into several times and both their dogs were killed. Luckily enough they were not home or they might have been dead to.
The list goes on and on.
Still all my kids lived in the Uk 2 have moved back to SA and they are as happy as can be. One still lives in London and then their is us. I still want to move back to SA i miss my family and friends and if i have to die i would prefer it to be in S-Africa. |

I'm sad to hear things like that...sure you have every right to leave if you're unhappy and I'm not condemning your decision...but my heart is here and I don't think i could just up and leave just like that...
you know what they say..when the going gets tough, the tough get going!
I love this country with everything in me...could never abandon it. But hey, that's just me
@Rolan: you're gonna have the time of your life, I promise! Don't let yourself be intimidated so easily ;) |

Well, I am leaving. But it's not because of the situation in South Africa. I'm not interested in being a tourist (I hate tourists), but I would love to live in some of the interesting places in the world while working there. My thoughts have been turning to Continental Europe and South America, but definitely not the UK or Australia (I'm not going anywhere endorsed by Bull or Alf).
If the situation in SA does inspire one to think about it with a bit more haste, then perhaps that is a good thing...
Now, now, Alf, if you carry on like that, I might just accept your invitation.... |
