So is this right: muslims believe Jesus was a Muslim?

Is this correct? Over in the religion forum, Da man has just stated that Jesus was a muslim. But most people realise that Jesus was Jewish. I've also seen several Muslims stating that Abraham was Muslim too!
Additional Details
edit for Peter B, I am not saying Jesus was a Muslim, but some Muslim people are saying it, so I am just seeking clarification.

They believe in more than that. Muslims believe that Adam and Eve were Muslims ( LOL! they had no religion!) and that Abraham was a Muslim ( OMG! Abraham was born over 2,600 years before Islam ever became a religion!). Muslims also take older holy scriptures of people and distort it to serve their religion- Abraham was going to sacrifice Ishmael instead of Isaac, the Muslims believe. Muslims also believe that Muslims saved the Jews from slavery in Egypt and they say the Jews did not thank the Muslims.

Their claim is that anyone who worships one GOD is a Muslim. You know and I know, this is not the case. I dont want to be a Muslim. You cannot take away MY identity by placing me under your falsehoods and fake labels.

So Abraham and other biblical figures who lived over 2,600 years before Islam ever came about were Muslim? What's next, NASA discovers a race of men on Mars and then the Muslims claim these aliens as being Muslim as well?

I believe that Jesus was a Prophet. I believe that Islam has been around since day 1 in the sense that Islam = a way of life or a way of living, under one God(Allah).Salam

Plz Plz: understand me and feel me: If I really want to learn about Judaism , I should go to a Synagogue, I'm sure all would agree.
And I'm only making the suggestion, that perhaps if some want to understand Islam they should visit a Mosque
Every single person in every single faith have a few(small) different definitions. And some yes have big differences. For example about Pagan. That's a rejoicing over mother earth. Not to do with Judaism, I understand all would be upset over that as much as Ultra spewing out total nonsense. In the end we have the same God, so lets try to good by him to other people. Inshallah (God Willing) Peace to all.

Paperback - to Muslims Jesus is a Muslim in the same way that Moses is. Da man is essentially correct from a Muslim point of view.

Good Luck!!!

The original meaning of "Islam" is the acceptance of a view or a condition which previously was not accepted. In the language of the Holy Qur'an, Islam means the readiness of a person to take orders from God and to follow them. "Muslim" is a word taken from the word Islam. It applies to the person who is ready to take orders from God and follow them.

"Abraham was not a Jew nor a Christian, but he was an upright (man), a Muslim; and he was not one of the Polytheists." 3:67

The two words, however, acquired specific meanings after the introduction of the message which was conveyed by the Prophet Mohammad. The message which was revealed to Mohammad is called Islam, and to profess the belief in his message is also Islam. Muslim, also, has come to mean the person who follows the message of Mohammad and believes in its truthfulness.

EDIT:

Can you show me where in the Bible it says that he was a Jew? If you can't find it quickly, let me help you. Read Genesis 11:31.

"And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in-law, his son Abram's wife, and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran and dwelt there."

So Abraham who was born in Ur of Chaldees could not have been a Jew. First because Ur of Chaldees was in Mesopotamia, which is now a part of Iraq. He was then more an Arab than a Jew. Secondly the name "Jew" came after the existence of Judah, the great grandson of Abraham (see chart on page 4). Read further, Genesis 12:4 and 5.

" ... and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.... and into the land of Canaan they came.

So Abraham emigrated to Canaan at the age of seventy five and the Bible clearly mentioned that he was there a stranger m Genesis 17:8: "And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God." Read now Genesis 14:13.

"And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew.... " M. How can you call Abraham a Jew if the Bible itself calls him a Hebrew which means a man from the other side of the Euphrates. It also means pertaining to Eber, a descendant of Shem.If you read Genesis 32:28 what happened to the name of Jacob after wrestling with an angel.

"And he said: 'Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel; for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.'"

So Abraham was a Hebrew. The descendants of Jacob were Israelites consisting of the twelve tribes. Judah was nicknamed "Jew" so that only Judah's descendants were called Jews originally. To know who Moses really was, read Exodus 6:16-20.

"And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations; Ghershon, and Kohath, and Merari.... And the sons of Kohath: Amram.... And Amram took him Jochebed his father's sister to wife; and she bore him Aaron and Moses."

So Moses was not a Jew, because he was not descended from Judah, but a Levite. Moses was the "law giver" (Torah is law) to the children of Israel.

Because we are using the Holy Qur'an as standard. You can explain the Bible and correct the Jewish and Christian prejudice with the context of the Qur'an. It is the last revealed book and has never been corrupted or adulterated. Its contents has been guaranteed by Allah in Surah 2:2: This is the Scripture whereof there is no doubt... and also in Surah 15:9: No doubt We have sent down the Qur'an and surely We will guard it (from corruption). This verse is a challenge to mankind. It is a clear fact that more than fourteen hundred years have passed and not a single word of this Qur'an has been changed although disbelievers tried their utmost to change it, but they failed miserably in their efforts. As it is mentioned in this Holy Verse: "We will guard this Book" by Allah, He has guarded it.

On the contrary, all the other holy books (Torah, Psalms, Gospels etc.) have been adulterated in the form of additions, deletions or alterations from the original.

The Qur'an say about Abraham and Moses in Surah 3:65:

O people of the Scripture [Jews and Christians]! Why do you dispute about Abraham, while the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed till after him? Have you then no sense?

And in Surah 3:67:

Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a true Muslim (worshiper of none but G-d alone) and he joined none in worship with Allah.

In Surah 2:140:

Or say you that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the twelve sons of Jacob were Jews or Christians? Say (of Muhammad), 'Do you know better or doesG-d? And who is more unjust than he who conceals the testimony he has from Allah?' And Allah is not unaware of what you do. Of course they were not Jews or Christians, as the name "Jews" came after Judah and the name "Christians" came long after Jesus had left.

May peace and blessings be on all the Messengers of God. Prophet Muhammad is a direct descendant of Isma'il, the first son of Prophet Ibrahim(Abraham). Prophet Muhammad was born in Makkah as a fullfilment of the prayer of Abraham as explained in the following verses of the Holy Quran, a book of revelations from God to the Prophet.

002.124 And remember that Abraham was tried by his Lord with certain commands,
which he fulfilled: He said: "I will make thee an Imam to the Nations." He pleaded:
"And also (Imams) from my offspring!" He answered: "But My Promise is not within
the reach of evil-doers."

002.125 Remember We made the House a place of assembly for men and a place of
safety; and take ye the station of Abraham as a place of prayer; and We covenanted
with Abraham and Isma'il, that they should sanctify My House for those who
compass it round, or use it as a retreat, or bow, or prostrate themselves (therein in
prayer).

002.126 And remember Abraham said: "My Lord, make this a City of Peace, and
feed its people with fruits,-such of them as believe in God and the Last Day." He said:
"(Yea), and such as reject Faith,-for a while will I grant them their pleasure, but will
soon drive them to the torment of Fire,- an evil destination (indeed)!"

002.127 And remember Abraham and Isma'il raised the foundations of the House
(With this prayer): "Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us: For Thou art the All-
Hearing, the All-knowing.

002.128 "Our Lord! make of us Muslims, bowing to Thy (Will), and of our progeny a
people Muslim, bowing to Thy (will); and show us our place for the celebration of
(due) rites; and turn unto us (in Mercy); for Thou art the Oft-Returning, Most
Merciful.

002.129 "Our Lord! send amongst them an Apostle of their own, who shall rehearse
Thy Signs to them and instruct them in scripture and wisdom, and sanctify them: For
Thou art the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

002.130 And who turns away from the religion of Abraham but such as debase their
souls with folly? Him We chose and rendered pure in this world: And he will be in
the Hereafter in the ranks of the Righteous.

002.131 Behold! his Lord said to him: "Bow (thy will to Me):" He said: "I bow (my
will) to the Lord and Cherisher of the Universe."

Mary (s) the mother of Jesus (s) was a descendant of Abraham (s)

Not at all in the sense that your talking about.

When Muslims people say Jesus or such and such was muslim they are refering to a person who was good and virtuous and did god's work they use the world muslim for such and such a person in the context your talking of.

They are ofcourse not meaning that they where "muslim" in todays sense rather in the sense i just explained to you.

What i have found is that in the muslim relegion there are alot of expresions and words that are lost in translation because they either have no english equivilant or the terms/definitions are simplified to mean one thing when infact the words themselves mean several things.

"edit" Hopeless gives a really good description without making it to long.

♥Sahar Umm Lioness of Islam♥
Being raised a Christian I was taught that Jesus was a Jew when I became a Muslim it was very hard for me to accept a few things that 1 that Jesus didnt die for me and 2. Jesus wasnt a Jew this confused me very much.

As a Muslim now yes I believe that Jesus is a Muslim, but as for Abraham he was nether a Christian nor a Jew he believed in the oneness of G-d.

First allow me to put an end to a misconception I saw someone say in their answer. Muslims do not worship Muhammad (peace be upon him)--they worship God, and NONE other than God. The Islamic declaration of faith is "I bare witness that there is no God but Allah, and I bare witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah." It should be noted that even Jewish and Christian Arabs use the word "Allah" when referring to God (in the Arabic Bible, you will even see the word "Allah" in the places that it says "God" in the English Bible).

At dictionary.com, the definition of a Muslim is "an adherent of Islam". The definition of Islam at dictionary.com is "the religious faith of Muslims, based on the words and religious system founded by the prophet Muhammad and taught by the Koran, the basic principle of which is absolute submission to a unique and personal god, Allah".

Now allow me to give the PROPER definition. As Muslim is an Arabic word, it roughly translates to "one that submits (to God)". That being said, Islam is not something new--Islam did not come about only 1400 years ago--it was around since before Adam (pbuh).

All of the prophets were Muslims--Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Joseph, Jesus, Muhammad, and all of the other prophets (peace be upon them) were Muslims.

Nowhere in the Torah does Moses (pbuh) say that he is a Jew, and nowhere in the Bible does Jesus (pbuh) say he is a Christian. Those after Moses and Jesus gave themselves the names Jews and Christians whilst in reality Moses and Jesus were both Muslims.

"He (Allah) has ordained for you the same religion (Islam) which He ordained for Nooh (Noah), and that which We have inspired in you (O Muhammad SAW), and that which We ordained for Ibraheem (Abraham), Moosa (Moses) and Iesa (Jesus) saying you should establish religion (i.e. to do what it orders you to do practically), and make no divisions in it (religion) (i.e. various sects in religion). Intolerable for the idolaters, is that to which you (O Muhammad SAW) call them. Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills, and guides unto Himself who turns to Him in repentance and in obedience." Qur'an, 42:13

"Abraham was not a Jew nor yet a Christian; but he was an upright man who had surrendered (to Allah), and he joined not gods with Allah." Qur'an, 3:67

So the short answer to your question--no, Muslims do not only believe Jesus (pbuh) was a Muslim--to say he WAS a Muslim denotes that he died, but Muslims do not believe he died; therefore, Muslims believe Jesus (pbuh) IS a Muslim.

Read the Qur'an.

EDIT:

Someone that responded to this question wrongly stated "according to the Koran jesus was a prophet, but a minor one."

THIS IS NOT TRUE!

The Qur'an says "The Messenger (Muhammad SAW) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say, 'We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers'..." Qur'an, 2:285

So as you can clearly see from the aforementioned verse, there are no "minor" prophets in Islam--the Muslims make no distinctions between the messengers... after all, all of God's messengers were God's messengers.

!!!
Yes, that is correct. And not just Jesus, but Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, all of them were Muslims.

The Muslims believe what is mentioned in the holy
Quran.
"Say: we believe in God and in what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Abraham, Isma'il: Isaac, Jacob and The Tribes, and in (the Books) given to Moses, Jesus and the Prophets, from their Lord: We make no distinction between one and another, among them, and to God do we bow our will (in Islam)." (Qur'an, Al-Imran 3:84)

abraham was definattly not a jew... he conciderd to be the father of all nations on earth , more like a spiritual father.

Abraham was not a Muslim but believed in Allah(S.W) (our G-D). This is the story: when Abraham was born he did not believe that the idols were the g-ds, they were made of dates, and at that time when the people were done worshipping these idols they would eat them when they were hungry, that did not make sense to Abraheem or Abraham. So he started to worship the stars he thought that they were the true god so he worshipped them but then they would disappear by night time and sometimes would not be there he did not like this, he wanted a g-d that was always there so he started to worship the moon , he thought that this was the true god because it shines during the night but by the morning it disappeared and he wanted to worship something that would not disappear and then he worshipped the sun thinking that this really must be the g-d because it provides light and warmth and is good for the crops and so this is g-d. The sun would disappear by night so Abraham gave up who is G-d?? So he thought that G-d is everywhere he can’t see him but he is there, he believed that g-d is the one that created everything he can‘t see him but that he can see us!! You see Abraham was not Muslim but he believed in the same g-d, that us Muslims believe in!!!
As Muslims we believe in the Bible and the Torah, because in our religion it shows us that these two books were sent down by the prophets but that people changed the wording, like the bible how many testaments are there even though g-d sent one version but the wording has been changed over and over again. Yes Islam came many years after Jesus time but the book sent to him the bible we believe in it (but now its been changed not the true version g-d sent) but at that time Jesus also believed in the same g-d that we believe in. I am just telling you what we believe in but not forcing it on everyone. PEACE!! I know my answer is sooo long!! I just hope that it helps you paperback_writer!!! =)

In Arabic as in Hebrew, the words Jew ( Yehudi), and the word Christian ( Nasrani) means one who submits to God which in Arabic is Muslim ... Muslim means submission to God. Jesus was Jewish by tribal blood , he falls from the trip Judah and that's why he is considered Jewish .... Moses on the other hand was not a Jew, he was a Levitt. So when Muslims say that Jesus and all the Prophets were Muslims its because today's Christian and Jews are not like Christians and Jews in Jesus and Moses days .... and these two men were more like today's Muslims... Nowhere in the bible did Jesus pray to a statue of a woman carrying a baby or to a cross like todays Christians do or Moses was kneeling in front of a wall. the way i understand it
when the notice above jesus head called him the King of the Jews, it was an insult.
jesus would have been nearer palestinian, than jew.
proving palestine & jews are closely related
the koran started in abrahams time when he was a jewish patriarch. abraham at that time was following God
& it's plain to see the first christians were jews, but they split into different groups, one of these group could have been muslim, starting their own religion.
according to the Koran jesus was a prophet, but a minor one.
abraham was also related to jesus by blood, over many generations.

these are just my feelings on the relationship between these 3 religious groups.
i have next to no proof other than
knowing people like i know people.
