Good point, and why not an equal distribution of holidays between all the religions?
And perhaps have public holidays on the same day as faith based holidays, the Nation can honour children, workers, mothers or whatever, and the Religions can still celebrate their holiday on the same day. |

They should!
But they've been celebrating those few holidays for so long, and shops make hefty profits off them, that I doubt it will change soon. |

We have over 20 public holidays a year ... adding a few more would cripple the country. It would be a great idea to remove some holidays and replace them with muslim/jewish holidays ...
BUT have you considered the uproar you would get from the unions ... Bear in mind all the Zionist guys (green felt with silver star badges) consider themselves Christians ... |

I actually agree with you on this point - holidays based on religious events should be done away with.
I'm a Christian that feels that religious holidays has become an excuse for the masses to over indulge in alcohol and parties, meaning most people(Christian and non-Christian) miss the whole point of honoring a day like Christmas or Good Friday. The true Christian will honour that day whether it's a public holiday or not - just look at Ascension day. |

Circular? I think you meant secular.
Most secular states gives the people equal holidays. Like in Singapore, there are Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists and people of other faiths.
However, because the 4 religions I mentioned are the main religions in Singapore, the government allows the 4 religions about 2 days of holiday a year. The Christians would get one each for Good Friday and Christmas; The Muslims get one each for Eid ul-Fitr and Eid al-Adha; The Hindus gets one holiday for Deepavali; and the Buddhists gets one day for Vesak Day.
I do not think that faith-based holidays should be done away with because then, it would be troublesome for people to apply for work leave when there is a major celebration/event in their religion. |

When I lived in SA, the company I worked for, used to allow people of different faiths the different days off. The company is a huge retailer that trades 7 days a week, so when it came to Diwali, for eg, all the Hindu staff were off and the rest worked, Good Friday, the Christians were off , etc....
It seemed to work well for us |

one thing about sa is that although we only celebrate traditionally christian holidays, most businesses and schools allow those from other faiths to practice their religion and have the days off they need. |

Now you see there you go again ! The first to remind me about a public Holiday (Christian one ) would be my staff who is not necessarily Christian ! If you want to see big kak in this country take away a christian Holiday ! Your suggestion sounds like it was proposed on a A.N.C. meeting ! |

Who says it is secular? The ANC? The facts are that South Africa's population is 80% Christian and that is why for the meanwhile Christian holidyas are celebrated. The Muslim population is about 2% so if you did your homework you would know why. And what public Holiday would you get because there is nothing for Pagans. |

The day Christ went to the heaven is not held as a holiday anymore. Leave us be. Just make more holidays for EVERYONE (now who can not say YAY to that??) |

yeah, usually secular states wld be fair in allocating holidays to all different faiths. however, since it's a secular state, they SHLD do away with faith-based holidays rite? |

How about everyone having a Religion ID, and evertime there is a specific religious holiday, only those with the corresponding Religion may take off from work. ? That would be fair to all. |

Dont take any away , just add more....the more holidays the better...Seriously , though you have a valid point - Some religious holidays are not nationally reconised as you say but some establishments do recognise them - when in school we used to get holidays for most of the religious days - also where i work now , if its an important day in your religion , we do get the day off... |
