We call it soccer = black and white round ball and rugby = oval ball. The old people (my dad) used to call rugby voetboll.

Well it always used to be soccer for me while in ZIm and SA but since moving to the UK I had to use football as that's what they use here. If I didn't they wouldn't know what I was talking about!

I must say I still get blank looks from people if I use a word from Zim or SA which they don't know like braai or eina.

I use Soccer. The first time I heard people talking about Football, I though it was an American sport.
For Rugby, I just use Rugby, in English and Afrikaans.

Lol Cakes that time when we came over,I used the word Soccer,the English looked at me as if I were an Alien.
Now I use the word Football,so I don't feel to out,but with my family we still talk about Soccer.xxxx

I use the word soccer.
I know I am not allowed to do this but have a look at the link below to find out where it came from. (Only for people that can understand German)
It most certainly is not purely a SA term.

In fact if you 'google' the word soccer....it pops up everywhere and most are not SA sites.

Finally got it in English. My German computer kept automatically changing my English search to the German version.

I say soccer for the game that has the round ball. When I say football, sometimes (though rarely) I use it for soccer, but most ly say it for American football.

I believe the first soccer-like game was played by the Chinese many,many moons before the English put their own set of rules to it. They called it football.
The problem started when schoolkids in Rugby, England, one day picked up the ball and started running with it.
A new game was born and it was called 'rugby football.''
Rugby football grew in popularity and spread over the world.
Soon it was also called 'football.'
The confusion led to the renaming of the original 'football' to soccer and rugby football to rugby.
But even today the confusion seems to continue.
