Moonrise

There is a new proposed law that would punish a parent who verbally or physically punishes his son/daughter ?

Additional Details
what do you think of this law ?

Hope
Forget about the physical punishment of a child cos that has limits and rules and a lot of constraints..... but verbal punishment will be against the law !!!!!!

Now how am i suppose to punish a child by placing them in the naughty corner all the time.... or by time out!! while keeping quiet and smiling at them for fear of going against the law?

Look, i might be a bit old fashioned here, but i think the modern way of raising a child whereby i treat this child as an adult and start talking to him/her as a grown up is really unfair.... kids will be kids (they need to live their age and have fun and make mistakes) and they will always learn through trial and error and through punishment and rewards.... take away any part of the equation and the results won't be desired or correct.

But mind u thought there is a big difference between verbal punishment and abuse and calling names!! So that nobody wud misunderstand my answer.

Well ever since physically punishing children in the UK was stopped, childrens behaviour has become worse. I smacked (not abused) my children and they grew up normally and respected me and their dad. They are great kids, and i was always proud of their good behaviour. My grandkids have been brought up the same way and i am always told how well behaved, happy and polite they are.
Spare the rod and spoil the child. Smacking your child is not abuse.
Abuse is when you beat them up. There is a big difference.

@naserq: You are referring to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

I totally agree with Hope. People have gotten too soft in some ways and totally careless in others. Look what is happening in the world to show you that these new ways are not 100% correct.

of COURSE we should not call children names or tell them they are bad. we should say "johnny that (action) was bad/ not good idea." and not say "you are a BAD boy". And of course we should not beat them. Yelling is counter-productive and exhausting. But You also cannot reason with a 2 year old.(lol try it, I DARE YOU)
I have heard myself some parents throwing worse tantrums than the kids!!
Punishment and consequences need to be CONSISTENT and reasonable to the age of the child in order to be effective.

Children are humans and deserve protection. Abuse is terrible to live through. I hope the law is specific and detailed so it will be very clear and upheld and not misused.
Too many kids in Egypt ( and MANY other places to be fair) have no rights at all, don't know their rights and are treated worse than dogs.

samy n
yes it is called child law,,,it is agreed ,be happy dady can not do any thing for you, or punish you,,,,it raise age of marriage of the girl up to 18 years,,,,,who put this law technokrate peoples did not live or had education from all came from abroad

What is verbally punishing your child? Yelling at them?

I do not beleive in hurting your child physcially, but if ever parent got punished for yelling at their kids, I think the majority would be in trouble.

sucara
Physically is one thing, but verbally is another. I think that it would never pass in a country like Egypt. Actually, I could go a step beyond that... if you asked the common Egyptian what they thought of such a proposal they would literally laugh in your face (honest truth).

It just wouldn't work. Besides... then you would have to define verbal punishment... no easy task if you think about it. Also enforcement would be impossible.

Schördinger
Before Applying Such Law they Should First Define Verbal And Physical Abuse

i forgot what s the name of "pyramid of priorities"
i missed the name but i m sure you know what i m talking about
this theory talk about the fulfillment of the needs of one person before moving to the following one
its starts with food then shelter then.........reading and writing so till we got to the distinguished rank of human relation you mentioned above in your question i think it needs lot of time and lots of work
unless you are talking about:"al madeenah alfadilah"in which lives there couple of thousands

I think some aspects are right, some aren't. Its a cultural difference really, they create this law, thinking that since other nations have it, it is "the" modern thing to do, but actually it only works there cuz of those countrie's culture.........

I am against sever physical punishment, like beating, but I think like spanking, or slapping their hand lightly (like they do to little kids,) is ok. See, cuz what happens fi amrika, en el wa7ed henak lama yebtedee yemed 2eido, maywa2efesh le3'ayet mayfashfesh 3adm el 3ayel, so those people need limits......

I know that in America each time parents start physical punishment on their child they threaten to call the child abuse centre so they are forced to stop. I don't know anything about verbal punishment/abuse. But if this law were applied in Egypt, it would solve the problem of overcrowded streets, since all parents would be locked in prison!

yes,
Children should be protected from both instances, yelling or physically punishing is sooo wrong. Children have human rights too.

spegali
Absolutly and totally agree with Elsie. If smacking a child breeds violence then why since smacking has become taboo have we not seen a decrease in violence on our streets?

Like Elsie my children had an occasional smacked leg, both are well rounded adults, who have never shown any signs of violence.

I wish I could say the same for the children I work with everyday. Their parents do not smack them, in school we are not to shout at them or do anything to damage their self-esteem but they are the most violent of children I have met in 17 years of working at the same place. They fight not only between themselves but verbally and physically assult their parents and teachers. Surely statistics should be showing a decrease in violent children by now?

I often wonder whose self-esteem is more at risk of being damaged. The children know all their rights, as adults working with them we seem to have non. I feel like my self-esteem is damaged when I am spat on in front of a whole class and told to go and f*** myself by 7 year olds.

These people want to get real and start actually listening to those in the know. Show me the statistics and I might listen.

I stand for anything that fights child abuse!!! There are many other ways to stop a child from doing wrong or to punish them....hitting and swearing is not the answer. After doing child psychology I have realized that the consequences of such acts are dire for the child and has a rippling effect. Child abuse is not only verbal or physical, but it should include emotional abuse and neglect as well. And each type and level of abuse should have its own sentence.

Also, their should be a law against those parents who have many kids even though they cannot support them and the children wind up in the streets. This is something that is plaguing Egypt with no hint of getting any better. This February when I was in Egypt me and my mom were waiting outside Metro supermarket for my aunt and I saw this little boy not more than 7 and he was cleaning cars. Then he went to sit down on the pavement....he looked as if the whole world's burden was on his shoulders...I gave him a cadbury bar because I didn't have any money...and that smile on his face is worth more than a billion euros.
Tell me what child deserves this? What child deserves this life with nothing but misery and burden? What child deserves to carry the responsibility of feeding his/her family when they should be outside playing? What child deserves to have his childhood taken away through no fault of his own? All I know is that this all needs to be stopped!! Before parents decide to have children they should stop and think a minute if they can financially, physically and emotionally support this child!!

When children are hit they feel as if they have done something very very bad losing their sense of worth and that their parents don't love them anymore. And even though the parents might love them to death and is hitting them out of love this isn't the message that the child is getting. The child is thinking that their mom or dad won't love them no matter what and they will begin to feel guilty and might even hate themselves. I want to ask you something...what kind of wrong can a child of 2 years old have done? Why does he get hit? And how can an adult hit someone so small and fragile? Is the child screaming to death because he wants candy? Okay don't get him the candy but don't hit him!! I saw a woman pulling her daughter by the hair...the daughter was only 10. How can somebody do this?

I do believe that parents have the right to raise their children however they want...but to inflict pain on them (physical and emotional...and the emotional lasts forever) and get away with it? I'm sorry but there is no justifying the hitting of little children. And even though parents may think that they're doing the right thing...what they're actually doing is causing pain and creating scars. How can you punish a child without hitting? Time outs....grounding....no dessert....anything but no hitting....no abuse!!!

And no offense to anybody....what I also always hated is when I saw people hitting donkeys!!! I mean OH MY GOD!! The poor thing stops because its tired and you just hit it....I just wish the donkey would take the stick and hit the person back and then they can see what it feels like.

PLEASE STOP CHILD ABUSE!!!! And even if the law doesnt work, you must save the children, you don't have to report the parents, just talk to them, raise their awareness. If that doesnt work call reinforcements.

Edit-Guys verbal abuse refers to swearing, cussing. It is any statement of disapproval which is undeserved and which tends to cause lasting scars.

Physical child abuse is physical injury inflicted upon the child with cruel and/or malicious intent. Physical abuse can be the result of punching, beating, kicking, biting, burning, shaking, pinching or otherwise harming a child physically.

Emotional abuse is both of physical and verbal and includes other things such as neglect, hostility, deprivation and privation.

Oh dear, I'm in trouble then, my daughter will become one of these horrible yobs if i am not allowed to verbally punish her, with my daughter she responds best to tone of voice, smacking her doesn't work so now i have to try and curb her behaviour with changing my voice, she knows when i am really serious and angry and she will usually stop being naughty but it doesn't always work.
Who has introduced this law? our prisons are full, we have a society of yobs and we are not allowed to 'verbally punish' our kids, what is this world coming to?!?

I am absolutely against any physical punishment of children. Studies have shown it has devastating effect to a child's psyche, so there is no excuse for that. There are other ways of upbringing children. Most important are love, respect, understanding, patience and a personal example a parent provides for their child.

Whenever a parent feels they need to snatch at any kind of physical punishment, it can only mean two things:

a) they haven't done their homework, that is, they made some mistakes and omissions in their child's upbringing which resulted in a problem

b) they have too high expectations, like they expect a 4 years old to act like an 8 years old.

As for verbal punishment... My personal ambition is to never raise my voice to my future children (with possible REALLY dangerous situations, like situations in traffic, being the ONLY exception). I really hope I will have enough wisdom to achieve that.
