To all white South Africans? |
Do you identify yourself as an african, or rather as descendant of Europeans that happen to live in South Africa? Also, if you travel abroad and someone mistakenly calls you european, american etc, do you correct them or just let it go? Additional Details oh i see, lol. This was not intended for black SA. However I do see your point. I just wanted to see if white s. africans identified as africans when they could be mistaken as Europeans. In essence whether they identified more as africans than europeans. |

I am a white South African and proud to be called South African. I do not consider my self as descendant of Europeans at all since I was born and raised in South Africa. I do correct people if I am called European. |

I am white, I say I am African, born in Africa under the Southern Cross! |

I see myself as a white South African. I hardly ever bring up the subject about where I come from, or try to compare it in conversation with people I meet. Unless they specifically ask me where I am from, or if they ask me questions, or talk about South Africa, do I respond. |

I was born in Africa, so I consider myself African, with European Ancestors.
As for travelling abroad, I've never left the african continent, so I have never been incorrectly labelled as a European. I would however correct the person who made the mistake. |

I was born in Africa, and I am a South African. My ancestors landed in the Cape in 1688, so I can classify myself more South African than many whose ancestors migrated into South Africa from Central Africa.
I live in Germany at the moment, and always correct people when they assume that I am German. (They must be idiots not to pick up my accent). And those who notice that my German is not 100% correct, ask if I am from the UK, or some think that I am Dutch. I am not ashamed to tell that I am a South African. I also try to give people a positive image of my country.
There was a time, in the 1970´s, when I was travelling Europe, that I was attacked for being a South African, and thus was made directly responsible for apartheid, even by Americans ! So it was understandable that, way back then, I did not broadcast the fact that I was from South Africa. But then, the majority did even know where South Africa was. They seemed to think that South Africa was a little town about 5 km from Tunis in North Africa. Absolute ignorance of Africa reigned way back then. |

If people ask, I say I am South African.
Some look at me incredulously (I alternate between Italy and Spain, for now) and so I need to inform them that there are South Africans of European descent.
Usually this is followed by me wondering how oblivious people in mainland Europe can be to foreign cultures (not all but quite a few).
I feel South African and therefore African.
When you live in a country, you get used to it's system (where do I pay my parking fines, where do i get a license for the dog etc. sounds silly, but change country and see how all these little things tax you) you get used to it's culture (languages, music, sports, food, lifestyle) and you make lots of friends, and have family that binds you to the earth.
I am definitely African but as a stay longer and longer outside of SA I am beginning to feel more like a citizen of planet Earth. |

I was born and raised in Africa, so was my family way back to my great-great-grandparents so I consider myself an African. And I correct people if they mistaken me for an American or European. And I'm proud of it to say I live here. |

I am probably going to take criticism from the other S.A. regulars for my stance on the issue but I consider myself a European in Africa. |

I am South-African.. but I see myself as european-south-african..
I loved being in europe and feeling like a European cause that is were my roots are... but I am still a South-African... does that make sense?
I treasure my heritage both european and African.. |

This is not the case in Aussie and NZ, thank goodness. They tend to automatically try to identify an individual by their country and not their colour, thank goodness! It's a more appropriate approach to identifying people and our accent usually gives us away so now they're more familiar with the country. The question is: Are you South African? Answer: Ya! How did you know? LOL. |

I once sat with some South Africans and we disscussed this very issue. Regarding Eueope USA Asia . The concencus was white SA are not indigenous people of Africa. They can call themselves what they like. In the west they are acceipted and it is not an issue like in South Africa. |

I identify myself as an African, South African. I have been abroad many times and fortunately NoBODY has ever called me an European or an American .......I just have to open my mouth once with my broad South African accent and then everyone say "................ Ah you are from South Africa!" and then I reply "Ja, Grote Griet, how did you know?" |
