There has never been a civilization or a nation referred to as "Palestine" and the very notion of a "Palestinian Arab nation" having ancient attachments to the Holy Land going back in time is one of the biggest hoaxes ever perpetrated upon the world!

Israel first became a nation in 1312 B.C. Many different peoples came through Israel but none ever managed to completely disperse all Jews.
Under Roman rule we find the first mention of Philistia derived from the Philistines that the Romans renamed Israel in an attempt to wipe out Jewish idenity. The Romans were angry because of the Jewish revolt against them. Further changed to what we see now--Palestine.

An interesting fact--Palestine has no Arabic meaning--Arab words all have meaning connected to the Koran but not this one--in fact--there is no letter "P" in Arabic.

Note: the Philistines are extinct and were not the first Christians--the first Christians were Jews.

There certainly was not 1.3 million peoples--more like 250,000 people of both Jews and Arabs lived in the land of Israel that was considered rather desolate.
One can not help but wonder why the Arabs never created a nation during the time they occupied Israel if it was so dog gone important.

Arafat wasnt even Palestinian--he was Egyptian.
The vast majority of Arabs came to the area after the Jews began draining the malaria-infested swamps and plowing the land! Jews created the economic opportunities which attracted Arabs to Israel. In fact, most of of the Arabs migrated there within the last one hundred years.Originating from Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq.

To except the revised history we see taking place today requires ignoring much historical data even from Arabs that lived during this time and archaeological digs that continue today to support the Jewish presense and lack of evidence to support an Arab Palestine.

This is an excerpt from a leader of the PLO:
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper "Trau" (March 31, 1977), PLO executive committee member Zahir Muhsein said, "The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct 'Palestinian people' to oppose Zionism. It is also been a "conceptual" war for ownership of the term "Palestinian" which has been transferred over to the Arabs whereas, before 1967, "Palestine" has always been synonymous with Eretz Israel and the Land of Israel."

The real truth is "Arab Palestinians" didnt exist until after 1948.

Um Anisa
Yes it was Palestine. The Jews were placed there after WW2 and told it was their land, even though Arabs already claimed the land and had lived there for thousands of years. The Palestinian people did agree to let some Jews live there, but not for them to occupy all of the land and try to wipe Palestine off the maps.

Yes, Israel was officially called Palestine before 1948. "Doc" is incorrect that no one cared about the land, there were 1.3 million people living there! And funny enough, they were and still are called Palestinians. They had/have been living there for about five thousand years, and after the Holocaust in WWII many Jews came from Europe to the country. Some say God promised the Jews the land (but would God really be racist that way and say, "This land is just for the Jews"?). For over 50 years Zionists have been trying to throw off the Palestinian people from their lands or what's called ethnic cleansing. There have been 4 wars and the Zionists changed the maps from "Palestine" to "Israel." However most Palestinians and those who believe that the country is rightfully theirs or should at least be shared fairly still call it Palestine. And the world watches unmoving as innocents are being slaughtered....

PS One out of every three refugees in the world is Palestinian.

Paligurl
Israel?
it's Palestine STILL

tesorotx
Yes, after WW2 the US decided a Jewish state was necessary or the horrors of the German holocaust would continue. Palestine was taken and given to the Jews as their homeland, it is part of the geographic location of ancient Israel but not all. Now the Palestinians are homeless.

Zionists and racists claim that the Ancient Jews who lived in the Holy Land 3000 years were their ancestors while they deny the contemporary Palestinian people the right to claim their antecessors the Ancient Palestinian People. Palestine was the name of the Holy Land from the Roman time up to now.

The Holy Land is for Christians, Moslems, and Jews for the last 2000 years.Today, the Palestinian population is product of many races: Arab, Egyptian, Jews, Greek, Roman, and Turks. The Palestinian people were Greek who immigrated from Crete Island to Canaan land, and lived on the West Cost of the country, and established many City-States a long the cost which exists up to now like the City of Gaza and Shdod, Al Magdal "Where Sant Marry came from"they intermarried with Canaan Arab people and developed a common language called Aramaic.
The Philistines were mentioned in the Old Testament during King David time, Christ lived in one famous Philistine City al Nazareth and he spoke their language.
The Philistine were the first people to convert to Christianity and first Bible was written in Palestine. The Philistine due to their Greek background they were able to convert the Greek Islands to Christianity. The Holly-land was named Philistina during the Roman Empire after they converted to Christianity and the name became a Christian name to the Church up to now the Holly-land of Philistine. In Arabic language the name of the country is Philistine or Felestine in Latin is Palestina in English is Palestine and in Aramaic is Felestine. Many Philistine people converted to Islam and many did not In Palestine today you will find the same family names but one side of the family is Christian and the other is Moslem.
The First Lady of Philistine, the wife of late President Arafat is Christian Lady. The Crusade wars did not divide the people of Philistine.Historically, 4000 years ago the Philistine are known for their love for the Holly Land and patience in battle filed and they defeated all the conquers at end or coexisted with them as free Philistine: the Egyptians, Jews {the Kingdom of David only lasted 80 years in small Eastern part of the country}
There is one important point in the history of Holy land that the Jews never have had control all of Palestine. Only small part on the western bank of Jordan River and the Kingdom of King David lasted only 80 years.Zionists and racists claim that the Ancient Jews who lived in the Holy Land 3000 years were their ancestors while they deny the contemporary Palestinian people the right to claim their antecessors the Ancient Palestinian People
Palestine was the name of the Holy Land from the Roman time up to now.

it was officially palestine and arabs lived there for thousands of years untill WWII, then they sent the jew to this land so that they could have a better home after the holocaust, that's what really happened, and actually, it seems like a joke more than a real historical event, can you believe it ?! they kicked the ppl out of their land to occupy it and the whole world supported that,..it's not the palestinians fault !!! what have they done to be dismissed from their lands ?!!!...that's so aggressive, and they now are trying to even spoil history by claiming that Palestine never existed !!!...WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO TAKE THEIR LAND IN THE FIRST PLACE ?!!!!...guys how would you feel if you woke up the other day to find ppl entering your land and making themselves feel at home, then they kicked you out the next morning because they needed a place to live, what a sick world...

The region was called Palestine (modern Israel, Jordan, and parts of Syria and Lebanon were all part of Palestine)

But before the 1960s, the only people who called themselves "Palestinian" were the Jews. Jews had been buying up land and rebuilding Palestine since the early 1800s.

The Arabs had always insisted that there was no such thing as Palestine, that it was all part of Syria.

The Arabs, with Russian help, developed this identity of "the Palestinians" in the 1960s as a political weapon. The whole world has now bought into "the Palestinians"; it's probably the most successful hoax in history.

Yes and no.

"Palaestina" is the name that the Romans gave to the area after their occupation of it.
The Romans wanted to reinforce their grasp in the land and erase the connection between it and the former kingdoms of Judah and Israel. Therefore they espoused the Greek name Palaestina ("of the Philistines") that originally referred to the Southern shore exclusively. The Romans renamed all cities and areas in Judah and Israel (Jerusalem, for example, became "Aelia Capitolina"), but for some reason "Palaestina" is one of the only names that survived as a valid one after the Romans.
The Jews that left the area after the Diaspora and the Jews that still lived there refused to accept the Latinized name, and kept on calling the land "Israel", or "Eretz Israel" ("land of Israel").
The Arabs (that occupied the area in the 7th century), on the other hand, espoused the Roman name in the Arabic version- Falestin.

The British Mandate of Palestine (that authorized the land in the 20s of the 20th century) maintained the Roman name (that passed through the Arab occupation and the Ottoman Empire), but acceded to the request of the Jewish settlement that the name of it in Hebrew (that was fixed as a formal language) will be "Palestina Eretz Israel" (Palestine land of Israel).

To make a long story short- there never was a sovereign country called "Palestine".
Palestine is the name given to the geographical area, an area that was occupied time and again by dozens of different regimes and empires.

Edit:
Two main corrections to my fellow answerers up there-
1) The Zionists (whether they are as vicious as some of you claim, or not) started settling the land long before the holocaust occurred. It started somewhere in the second half of the 19th century, and when the holocaust survivors started to immigrate to the land, they had a well built country to integrate in. Israel was officially recognized as a country in 1948, but it was established long before it.
2) The name "Israel" is much older and ancient than the name "Palestine". Beside the bible, there are several monuments and stones left that recognize the area as "Israel" (The Egyptian "Israel Stele", 1230 approximately).

The point gaming shows you exactly who are the answerers, but there is a little truth in what they're saying. Anyway, I suggest you to read some history books (not biased web-sites!) and decide for yourself in this very complicated matter.

The actual word "Palestine" came from the Romans, not the Arabs, and there has never been an independent country or state of Palestine, nor a Palestinian rule. Yet we are led to believe that there are Palestinians and then there are Arabs.

There is no language known as Palestinian. There is no distinct Palestinian culture. There has never been a land known as Palestine governed by Palestinians. Palestinians are Arabs, indistinguishable from Jordanians (another recent invention), Syrians, Lebanese, Iraqis, etc. Keep in mind that the Arabs control 99.9 percent of the Middle East lands. Israel represents one-tenth of 1 percent of the landmass.

But that's too much for the Arabs. They want it all. And that is ultimately what the fighting in Israel is about today. Greed. Pride. Envy. Covetousness. No matter how many land concessions the Israelis make, it will never be enough.

But before that, Palestine was called Israel.
"Palestinians" never called themselves that until the 1967 war. Prior to war they were either Syrians, or Egyptians.

They are an evil bunch, incredibly hateful and blood-thirsty. No wonder they are treated like garbage by their own.

They falsify facts, aim at children, use their own children as shields, cry out "bloody murder" after one of theirs has been targeted, and proudly display their bloody hands after they murder a Jew or two.

I just realized that there can never be peace. I lost my hopes. One of the two nations has to leave, and I hope and pray that it isn't the Jews. We just have to do what we have to do, and turn off our sentiments about the "homeless arabs", because they aren't homeless, just look at the map.

Doc
It goes back and forth. In modern history, The region was known as Transjordan. It was virtually a swamp land. The Jews had been promised that land back in the book of Genesis. In the late 1920s the Jews reclaimed the swamps, turning the land into something useful. No one cared until oil was discovered in the region. The land was "owned" by G. Britain. When oil was discovered, the nomadic people "palestinians" moved in and tried to take over, claiming the lands to be theirs. For political reasons, the Bit.s desided to back the palestinians. In my biased opinion, this was a huge mistake. The palestinian people as a whole have never made any attempts to build. Instead, their history has been to let someone else do the hard work, then move in and claim it to be theirs. We're seeing this now in the Gaza. It was a wasteland until the Israelites moved in and built it up. They just recently were forced to give the land back, won through a war inwhich they were attacked without provocation. Having returned it, what have the palestinians done? They've destroyed, and run into the ground that which was built up by the Jews. As a society/people, the "Palestinian" only came into being in the later half of the twentieth century. Specifically when Israel was created by U.N. sanction after the second world war, and by the aggression of Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. -- from where these nomads originated. Odd that these countries of origine now refuse to repatriate their lost peoples.
