What's it like to live in America? I live in South Africa?

I've not lived in South Africa, so I really can't compare. All I can say is there's 50 states and 300 million citizens. There's cities, small towns, and rural countryside. Mountains, lakes, beaches, plains, desert, tropics. Outside of the largest cities, cost of living is relatively low. If you work hard, you can achieve just about anything you want. Having lived in 2 of the UN's darling ("top") countries, and the world's "best countries" according to many magazines over the past decade, I can tell you that I do look forward to living in America again. These "best places" surveys are alright, but you have to find the place that's best for you. American artist Georgia O'Keeffe was once asked why she liked to travel so much around the world to a variety of locales. Her response: "I want to make sure I'm living in the right place!" She lived out the rest of her life in the hills of northern New Mexico.

America is a nation of fat starving people. Our food is poison, our government makes crappy choices, school system sucks. People can lie around and get free money from the government. Work is very hard to find. There are large cases of abuse to children and animals. We have used up most of our natural resources and don't care. We have become immoral with alot of racist. The government has denied people of certain religions to this day a fair chance. We no longer spend time with family. We buy things we don't need to move our self up a social ladder. I can go on and on. The biggest problem is we try to do what is good for the people and it seems to back fire. America was built on the hopes and dreams of men and someday we will figuer out a way to get there. There is always room for improvement but America is not the worst country by far.

I'm not American, nor do I live there...
But after reading juicygirls answer I just had to reply here after laughing. I live in South Africa...and wow! Wouldnt that be nice... waking up with an elephant on your porch... hmmm?
I think I last saw a wild animal on the Discovery channel... I could go to the Joburg zoo or a one of our national Parks (wildlife parks) if I wanted to see a real life elephant....

I suppose everyone views where they live differently.... Some people are happy and think its wonderfull, whereas others think it to be crap... So I suppose you couldn't really turn this info into facts hey? It would just be based on different perceptions, experiences and opinions.... Anyway, I suppose its as good or bad as you want it to be... (",)

It is not like in hooliwood movie!! it is working all day and family dont see each other few weeks life is much better in europe.... in usa people live to work in europe people work to live.........

I'm a South African living temporarily in America. American lifestyles are fast n busy(where as we S.Africans like to take some time out for a Braai!), more convenient, everything can de done on the computer(Where as we enjoy going over to the Babi to buy a loaf of bread and some fruit everyday!). So in all it's very different but certainly a life any1 could get used to, except me.......Cause I LOVE MY SOUTH AFRICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in SA too. I'd rather look at countries like Australia or Europe. I think every country has it's crime and bad government and bad areas and not enough jobs. But, hey, look at the bright side - SA is the most beautifull country in all the world. Well, so it is said, but sometimes I wonder... hmmmm

This is a great question. And I have to agree with the majority that America sucks. So we are the richest, most powerful nation, that doesn't mean the people are happy. Our government is run by idiots, the environment is being depleted of all of its' natural resources, and welfare is a joke ( because fat, lazy people are taking advantage of it).

I work my **** off everyday and get taxed like crazy mad. I would rather live in South Africa or Europe where everything is so much nicer.

america is full of dumb people, not all of them are rich, black and white poverty, food is fattening, fat people run around trying to get more food, lots of sluts, people get pregnant at 14 or younger, weather sucks, people are not friendly, self-absorbed, ignorant, arrogant!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My husband just got back, he says USA is amazing, he slept every night without worrying about crime.
We are all going for a holiday in Dec, he says I will not want to come back.
Stuff is cheaper there, and we are already being taxed over 40% here & petrol prices rise monthly.

Only drawback I heard about was they only get 10 days leave per year there.

In some ways it is a little better but not at all what we are used to when you think the way of everyday things. They drive on the wrong side of the road for starters, all their money looks the same and the people in general is not friendly at all. Their countryside SUCK. Not beautiful at all, damn cold like hell most of the time.
I lived here in the States now for 3 years but I am considering going back to Europe. Much better there. If you don't have to come here you did not miss too much.

I am living in the US at the moment .I have to say some parts of America are really safe,but i think everywhere we go there will be crime .I think the food is great if you like mexican food and fast food i also have to say i miss my AFRICAN food though.prices here on petrol are also exspensive..I have to give our Counrty the medal for beauty and attractions.Most people are friendly and they are also helpfull.The surface in the stores are much better then ours.Everything is convenient yes,but does that mean it is good? I think we learn the hard way to struggle for what we want,and once we have it we appreciate it. I MISS S .Africa alot and will definately go back when i am done with school.

Interesting Question and interesting answers

I normally get worked up by people being negative about South Africa.
I never thought it possible that anyone can be unhappy in such a great and rich country like America.

So this means its a given fact that some people will never be satisfied.
So every country has a Alf G, Bull, Turnington5, Vango and Brad Morris( These guys always post negative things about South Africa).
Hmmm

Don't get me wrong constructive criticism is very good and needed, but those guys are just destructive all the way.

Thanks for the question I know I didn't answer it but I had to share that thought.

my experience of usa is that it is crap.........................would rather live in south africa with all its problems................the american dream is a nightmare............................

as south african u would probably not enjoy it.i know s.a. sucks in many ways but u have to go where you could adapt after a while and the states aint it.bloody great country with many opportunities,and, south africa pales in majestic beauty from the rockys west.south africa is by far not the most beaut in the world from a geographical point of view.nice yes but please people get real,have any of u been anywhere else?not london for two years either.kiwi,oz,s america,alaska,canada brittish colombia.etc etc.bloody deluded to make statements like that.i think all living outside the place should shut the f-ck up as u left bcause it sucks and just miss ma balls chutney.

Its fun. And you get to do whatever you want and eat fast food! But the scenery isn't as pretty! And you wont wake up in the morning with an elephant on your pourch! Schools are really good too!
