What's the difference between Palestine and Israel?

Is Palestine for the Arabs and Israel for the Jews? Do the Jews own Palestine and say it is part of Israel?

History (VERY simplified).

The Israelites settled some land and King David conquered some more. This became Israel as described in the Bible.

Israel was then conquered by lots of people and (parts of it) eventually became what we used to call Palestine. During the early 20th century a lot of Jewish settlers moved there, and after WWII even more moved there and some of the land was officially recognized as Being Israel, while the rest was Palestine

However, during a series of wars Israel took over a lot of land that was officially recognized as being Palestine (plus land from Egypt and other countries, some of which has since been given back).

The current dispute revolves around the fact that after WWII two states were created. The modern state of Israel and the modern state of Palestine. However after a series of wars the modern state of Israel currently controls much of the land originally allocated to the modern state of Palestine. It won't allow it to be self ruling and won't allow people displaced during various wars to return.

Check out the Israeli foreign ministry homepage. It has a series of maps on it detailing how the border has shifted.

Palestine is a country; it has existed for a thousand years. It is currently under hostile occupation by a jewish organization that calls itself a government. The jews claim to own Palestine. They do not own Palestine anymore than the U.S. owned the Philippines.

Palestine= Nation

Israel= State

Nation- a large aggregate of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory

State- a nation or territory considered as an organized political community under one government

Palestine has the potential for becoming a state but is not and has never been a state.

BMCR
There never was an independent state called Palestine nor is there currently one.
There used to be a colony called Palestine where Israel is now that was governed by the British and the Ottoman Empire before that. That ceased to exist in 1948.
At the time, a partition plan was formulated to create a two state solution, of which one would be Jewish and the other Arab. The Jews accepted the plan and the Arabs did not. When Israel was officially born, several Arab armies attacked the new state with the goal of destroying it. That plan failed.

yea you'v got that right.Palestin's land was stollen from the isreails.Isreails were(i think)people from france and England who gathered and wanted a country.

Historically speaking, 'Palestine' was part of the Ottoman empire, not a land of its own. Palestine was for Arabs, but there were Jews and Christians as well as Muslims. Israel is for Jews, though there is a Muslim minority. As you can see from the posts with thumbs-up, Israel does indeed own Palesine and claim it is part of Israel--in fact, many claim Palestine doesn't exist, even though:

a) This ignores the atrocity of expecting millions to live not only without homes but without identities
b) Palestine was created by the same mandate that created Israel. Legally speaking, if Palestine doesn't exist, the mandate couldn't be legitimate.

Then again, maybe they want the mandate to be illegitmate, since the current territory of Israelis is far larger than the original Israel.

Israel is not really a legitimate country. It is on land that is rightfully supposed to owned by the Palestinians. However, since the Zionists(Jews who want a Jewish state) wanted their own land, they stole it from the Palestinians. Now the rightful owners are angry. Hence, the 60 years of war and counting.

Israel refers to a country that exists while "Palestine" refers historically to the area comprising Jordan and Israel.

(ZOMG is the Jordanian state "illegal" too?)

The angels have the Arc Light.
I guess I'll start by addressing some of the mistakes already made here.

'Philistina' or 'Syria Palestina' was the name that the Romans gave the land after they took it from the Jews. The Philistines had been an old enemy and naming it that was definitely intended to rub salt in the wounds of the defeated Jews.

The name resurfaced after WWII when the Ottoman Empire (1299-1921) was dismantled for being on the losing side. The UK and France carved up the former Empire and the UK named the region they had control over 'Palestine'. Either they didn't realize the insult in that or they didn't care.

7/8ths of the 'Mandate of Palestine' became Transjordan, an Arab country, in 1922.

In 1947, the UN proposed a partition of the remaining 1/8th into separate Jewish and Arab states. The Jews accepted. The League of Arab Nations refused to do so. Mind you, that's the governments of other Arab states, not the resident Arabs. Israel became a state on 14 May 1948.

The next day, the armies of seven Muslim and Arab states attacked. They lost, and of the land that was to have been that second Arab state, half went to Israel and half went to Arab Transjordan.

'Palestine' had has a very short history of being identified as such. But it's proven a very handy tool for undermining the state of Israel. Several Arab governments and groups like Hamas and Hezbollah are adamant that Israel be destroyed and that there cannot be any Jewish homeland in the Middle East. They will do anything -- including using their kindred as pawns -- to undermine Israel.

'Palestinian' properly refers to anyone living in the area of the Mandate between 1922 and 1948. That includes Palestinian Jews as well as Palestinian Bedouin and Palestinian Arabs.

The Palestinian Jews -- and all of the Palestinian Arabs who didn't flee when the League attacked -- are Israeli citizens. The Palestinian Arabs who fled were put into the Gaza refugee camps by the Egyptians who controlled that land. They are kept there by immigration restrictions from all of the Arab nations 'lest their identity be diluted' (i.e. they're no longer useful as pawns) and by Israel because the phenomenally high P.A. birthrate would mean that Israel would cease to be a Jewish country within two generations.

It's a mess, isn't it? Which could be sorted out fairly easily if everyone would accept the right of Israel to exist and all share the responsibility for the refugees.

The Jews invaded the land of the Philistines and made it their own in ancient times. Then, when the Romans threw the Jews out of the land, it reverted to the original people and became known as Palestine. Then, in the late 1940s the Jews returned and have been on an expansion program, mostly.
There must be an amicable agreement on land and land rights between the two parties.
The Jews cannot claim it is their Biblical privilege to take more land, because the Palestinians are Muslims....they are not the pagans of old....this is one of the reasons why the Muslim World is at odds with Israel.

sixpinkcat
Palestine and Israel are two middle eastern countries next to each other and Israel is a Jewish country and Palestine is a Muslim country.

They fight each other becuase the land Israel is on, once was in Palestinian territory, but was taken by questionable means to form a much needed haven for Jews.

Sadly, the war over that land is very bloody and neither country is safe.

Israel also has the backing of the United States, via the republican leadership (like Bush), which makes everything worse and bad war tactics have been used against Palestine.

That's all I know...

Israel exists and Palestine doesn't (at least officially).

Joe
"Is Palestine for the Arabs and Israel for the Jews?"

No. Israel is for the arabs. Israel stole their land. It is an illegal state. Israel is for zionists. Many jews don't believe in it and that it is just a zionist illegal state.

"Do the Jews own Palestine and say it is part of Israel?"

No, ZIONIST Jews do. For decades it has tried to ethnic cleanse Palestine in order to steal it into being a part of Israel.

The arabs hit back on 9/11

palestine is imaginary, it doesn't exist. it might exist someday in gaza and the west bank, but for now there's no such thing. the jews don't own palestine, israel owns israel, and israel is a part of israel. there never was any palestine, and israel isn't holding anyone else's land, even if people whine that they are.
