It did happen to me before. At first I noticed the guy looking at us in the mirror and was obviously listening to what we were saying. We lowered our voices, so he started leaning back in his chair to be able to get closer and hear better! His glances in the mirror were getting longer and conveyed his frustration at not being able to hear well! He decided to give his "opinion" concerning the topic which was about a friend who was extremely jealous over her hubby to the point of being insanely unreasonable! He had decided that all women were nuts and that we should niboos idna wish wi dahr 3ala ilni3ma illy i7na feeha which in his opinion was having men who accepted to take charge of us balawy who were naqisat 3aql and deen!!! One dirty look back at him in the mirror and completely ignoring him while resuming our conversation in an even lower tone of voice was enough to convey the message that his participation in the conversation was not welcome! He shut up and quit looking at us. I must say though that his comments to other drivers were very nasty! lol |

I'd continue the conversation. I might choose to ignore the cab driver if he is being absurd but if he's making sense, why not??
If it's a private matter, I wouldn't discuss it laod enough for him to hear.

i used to be shy to say anything to the driver, but my husband is teaching me to stop talkin and say with serious face: n3am...
honestly it's not just taxi, in egypt service anywhere is so terribly bad. i don't even want to mention restaurants and coffee shops, and i really don't go to cheap places. |

If it is a personal matter I would politely ask the driver to mind his own business. If it is general conversation I wouldn't mind. It really depends on the subject of the conversation.

Actually it was the other way around for me.. I had to interfere in a conversation between the driver and the guy next to him.. he started with the word (bey2ollak) which always make me wonder about the identity of that who elly bey2ollak
bey2ollak.. when the divers went underwater to inspect the location of the sunken ferry "Salem express", they discovered an oil pipeline that indicated enn "Elso3odeya betesra2 el petrol men masr" .. I couldn't take it anymore and had to ram into the conversation to try to stop this flood of "Hatal" |

i think some of them do that because you are girls, and it's a way to open conversation just for curiosity or something i don't know but i recommend either you tell him you were talking to your friend or just completely ignore him.. |

It depend on the topic in question and the situation the brought about the discussion. You know some people in an attempt to be social, they sometimes over step their boundary. You have to be adoptive to that. But whatever the situation an d the discussion, I will be surprised and annoy, but I will try as much as possible not to show. The step I will take is that I will either keep quite, or change the topic and see his reaction. |

forget what we were discussing and listening to his views and start asking him questions to a point where he would say... "sorry i cant go more further my brain's plugs just back fired!" ..... =D
i did this a couple of times it was usually i was talking to my friend on general things and the driver had his views on that topic as well n joined the conversation.. started asking silly questions and the driver himself went into a SILENT mode!!! =p |

well...it did happen to me many times! & i never paid attention to what they were saying , I mean I totally ignored them. I think it is just rude of them to do that specially when it is a personal issue or something . but when i`m alone & the cab driver starts a conversation , i talk back in a friendly way.
what i never do is being the one who starts the conversation!
have a nice day

I make sure that I do not talk in taxis about private matters. The only thing that I may talk about in taxis is the traffic. If my friend starts talking in the taxi, I tell her to wait till later. |

we stop talking immediately .
it is our mistake to talk in the 1st place in a cab.
if we have a strong urge, it can be done in brief phrases in english till we get off the cab.
when we are in a private car driven by a private driver, it is different.
we talk openly and he never joins the conversation .
but when we discuss something private, we do this in english , and use body language so that he doesnt get what we are saying. |

Honestly Rana, if it was something private i would never discuss it in public, but since i did then there is no problem if he joins in, i have the right to listen to him or ignore him.
But i have to tell you, i am a nut case, i loooooooovvvveee to talk to taxi drivers, they open up the most amazing topics and have some real strange and foreign ideas and points of views on life and situations. Try it, they are around so many people and have so many experiences.
BTW did you read TAXI, i swear to God i must have met some of those taxi drivers in my life coz i lived and heard most of what was said in the book. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL BOOK. |
