I have to agree with your friend Zim, Love is the most important thing in a relationship. On the other hand i believe that once a person decide to marry it should be forever. The divorce rate is just too high especially among young people because, i think, they jump into marriages for all the wrong reasons.

I've had disagreements with many of my friends who get married and they nag me about when am I getting married. One friend even went as far as saying if a guy stays with you for more than four years and does not marry you then he is using you. (I'm sure she was referring to me because I've been together with my partner for eight years now).

However, I always tell them i will not give in to societal and peer pressure. Like MB says if it happens it happens but if does not I'm cool with that too.

I think the importance of marriage will vary from person to person.

I've never quite grasped why marriage is so important to many people - as a very happy single person I can honestly say that if it happens it happens and if it doesn't I'm fine with that too. Relationships in general are just too complicated.

I love it ! It is one of the best things I did was getting married and have kids ! I will stay married until my wife leaves me ,ha ha ha ! She is the only one for me and we are together for 17 years now but we only got married 8 years ago .If I knew then what I know now I would have been married a lot sooner !

The basic idea of marriage, is, due to the fact that a man and woman love each other, they commit to stay one another's partners FOR LIFE. This is especially important for the children who may get born from the partnership. If this type of commitment is made outside a formal contract, but with the same sincerity, I have no problem with it.
Personally though, I would like to get married in the traditional way.

Marriage is a social legal contarct between a man and a woman and that includes the following:
Would promise to live together for whole life.
Would love each other.
Would have babies if they can.
And would be strict to their partners only for bodily needs.
And lot more other things to live under one roof.

I think marriage is the right way to show your love to a woman, but love it not enough even to get marry from someone, there is more important things, and I think love is the atmosphere that should generate all these important things and bring them all together.

WeÂ´ve been married for 30 years. We have been through thick and thin, bad times and good times. If we had not been married, we would most likely have been separated decades ago. And then where would we be now.
Marriage is for life, we did not marry because society expected it of us. We did it because we wanted to. And I really have not encountered this "nauseating obsession" about marriage. Must be some guilt thing on your friendÂ´s part. He must sort it out with himself.

Not sure that society is obsessed with marriage considering how many people are living together instead of marrying and that over half of the marriages end in divorce. However, until there are legal solutions for the partners in committed relationships, it is a necessary institution.

I think he is right. I feel that you can have a marriage w/out having to go through all of the ceremonial stuff that comes with the traditional wedding. It should be about the couple and their relationship and committment to each other, not some document or ceremony. However, I don't know that I'd go so far as to say obsession.

I sometimes think that people just get married because that's what life is about....I usually think that when I see my former high school classmates getting married (they are supposed to stay little LoL). I'm sure you get those who truly love each other and stuff, but one should enjoy the other things in life first because if you decide to get married it's usually for life and everything changes...once you are married you have to think of the other person as well. So my answer to your question is, she's right in a way and wrong, because you do get the people that really LoVe each other very much, but then you get those who gets married because everyone's doing it LoL, not to talk about the others who gets married for other reasons other than love.

Piece of paper isn't gonna change a thing. Actually, sometimes it makes it worse... All of the sudden there is this pressure of being tied to someone in written words... It's stupid, I know but it has happened to a lot of people I know...
