I never use it, and don't care much for the use of it...But I find it interesting at how fast and wide it has spread. Most of the world has caught on to it which brings us all closer somehow. Isn’t it amazing what one sweet little acronym can do? A pity that our communication skills are not that successful in more important areas for 'crying out loud'
However the use of it always sets a childish tone to what has been written, in my opinion; which is the reason I prefer not to use it. |

lollollol
As much as i use it, i dread the day it passes into general usage:
Teen1: "and then, like, she says thats like s-o-o unlol..."
teen2: "lol"
teen1: "i know!!"
teen2: " o m g -lol"
As you can see, its a great way to say nothing.
I think its a better way of showing that you are laughing (even if you're not) than by saying "ha ha ha".
Ayiza: where did i say i hate using it? Read it again: "As MUCH as i use it....". and then why would i start my answer as
"lollollol"?
Ayiza, you make me laugh out loud (for the wrong reasons). |

Lol so hoe moet ek nou voel - soos Dowwe Dolla and if it's really a issue i would rather use lollipop, i like to use it to express disbelieve or to show it is suppose to be a joke but ok no hard feelings |

Vango

Somehow, it always makes me think of a lollipop... |

Computer lingo...yep. (meh, it;s ok)
Lol-like oh lovely
Lol-laughing out loud
Lol-lots o' love
Lol-lekker oranges & lemons
Lol-livid old lady
Lol-lillies on lake
Lol-looney on loop (don't ask)
Adding onto what Ayiza said about ROFL...i personally like that one...it makes me think of Rolo. |

I also hate it except if Cherie uses it! It reminds me of Dowwe Dolla or Boeboe of Vetkoek Paleis...... |

Hmmm... you're actually right.
Had a girl working here with us use it a lot, and I suppose I got into the habit myself. I dont really have a problem with it, but I suppose it being over used is a bit annoying. |

I find it an over used irritant. Styvies said it. LMGA. (lag my gat af.) |

its just overused, thats all. most people dont laugh they just use it to tell the person they are talking to that they think what they said is funny or clever. |

Bull8, now what is Cheri and I, going to use instead, lollipop? Like Cheri has said, we use it to express laughter or dismay on a particular topic or answer. Okay, we have got the message, no offence taken. |

I prefer using little smiley faces, i don't have any worry's with people that use 'LOL', but it does sometimes irritate me when they use it up to 3 or 4 times in one sentence. :) |

Now Vango's answer gets a genuine LoL from me because i really did!!! It depends on when and how it is used that warrants a LoL. But personally i dislike it too. |

It used to be really irritated by it, but it is such an easy way to try and express accompanied emotion.
Text can be misinterpreted so easily, and a tongue-in-the-cheek comment from me will be missed by 80% if I don't put the obvious in (LOL) .
Not important enough for me to have any strong feelings about it, it is simply one more way to try and communicate feelings with text. Shorthand, I suppose!
I much prefer the smileys icon, it conveys more. It is a funny thing, Bull, to communicate with strangers as friends, considering those people don't have any idea of the way one really talks and laughs.
Big smiles to you! |

Cant say I hate it - if fact I immediately have a picture of a person having a great big laugh - you know the round mouth, deep belly chuckle..
Bull - what does "prebuscant" mean? |

It is used to much.
I do see the need for the expression but it a lot of people use it out of context.
Rather use a smiley face.. |

I use it fairly often when writing. I find it useful as an interjection. The same as Ha, ha! I do not use it when speaking.
What has horrified me is hearing germans using it when speaking to each other in german. Don´t they have any original language? Must they always copy English words and sayings to feel cool and hip? |

I don't use it and would prefer not to be judgmental on its usage, except that it sounds fit to be used by acquaintances. But I fully understand your discomfort with it. |

I still don't know what lol means, is it "lol met jou vinger in jou hol"
Cause I talk to people all over the world and specially the young ones use it
Myself don't like it cause it sounds stupid why not Ok or cool I'm use to cool now |

Ayiza

I don't have a problem with it.
It's not rude so I can't see where the problem is.
