This was one of the great mysteries of Egypt when I first came to live here,and when I married an Egyptian I tried to find out how they can spend 3-5 hrs just sitting and chatting,as you say about what ?
Well it seems from what I have been told it can range from football and the lastest game to current events, business and the price of shares.
I do know from being present when Egyptian men do business that it takes them hours and hours to get to the point.
First they chit chat about general topics,their families,health, the weather,then it moves to sport ............and then eventually they will begin to discuss business, which has been on their minds all the time for it was the reason they came to meet in the first place.
I call it "a secret mens business mission" when he says he has to meet so and so in a cafe, although it can also be a resturant where they will sit for just as long.
Egyptians like all Eastern cultures are very big on protocol and it has to be observed no matter how long it takes.
I am the opposite I would rather get the business out of the way first and then do the chit chat.
The open air cafes where you see guys sitting for hours with a glass of tea and a sheesha pipe is a "sacred" place where thay can be men,feel like men and talk about mens stuff.
It is something their fathers did and their fathers before them. It is a meeting place to socialise,do business and make contacts. |

The least they can do is go try and irrigate and plant the desert, or build, or do anything. If they need resources, they should search, and they will find them. |
