I miss the simple country life I had in Texas growing up..
My gran had a farm.. it was beautiful.. you take trees for granted when you live in USA, but when you come to a desert country, you really miss the greenery..
I miss running through the fields with all the dogs, chasing the cows..
I miss the snow in the winter.. I miss taking a bucket or a box in the winter and sliding down the hills in our fields only to have to stop cause we crashed into a fence or trees at the bottom, hahahaha.. many skinned knees cause of it..
we used to ice skate (with our sneekers only) on the ice on the fish pond out in our field..
I miss the smell of hay .. all that stuff.. there are no green farms like that here in Saudi.. |

I'm an American living in Eastern Europe, and the things that I miss the most are ice cream (it's terrible here); baseball; and being able to make small talk with people in shops. |

I was raised in Saudi Arabia. I didnt live in my country for long time. So i dont miss it that much. But i have lived in Cyprus for 4 years. Its a small place with very low population. Every one knew every one almost or atleast see each other every other day. Its a beautiful island and peaceful place. I was happier there. People are alive there not like here. I really want to feel things. |

ASK sister tina, I was born in New Delhi and have lived in England for the last 12 years of my life (my husband and I moved within a week of getting married!) so for me both are home. As you might appreciate for me life after marriage has been another life altogether so i feel as if I've had one life in New Delhi and another one in england!
What I miss about England v sorely is the bread (the bread here so BAD and full of chemicals). Seriously though I miss the cool, quiet evenings when we could go out for walks - also the drives. The pretty little idyllic village we made our home in, You needed to only drive twenty minutes in any direction to go to another pretty town worth exploring or a picnic spot where you could sit and have tea while the kids ran around.
What I miss about new Delhi are the sheer Life and Buzz of the place. Everytime I go back I feel such bounce and life there and nowadays the options in New Delhi are simply dazzling.
We came to Saudi bcos my husband got offered a really exciting project by his company here and we thought ok two years in Saudi we can do Umrah and if Allah is kind also Hajj... By the grace of allah we have done Umrah and inshallah will do Hajj this year.
Next year inshallah we will go back to britain I think. at least I hope so - i did not expect to miss it so much and my children also miss it a lot even after spending almost a year here. do remember us in your prayers and duas.
by the way can you tell me where can one find good atta here? You know like Pilsbury's chakki fresh - its been a year in Riyadh and Indian stuff was easier to find in UK! (You get in local supermarket there!)
EDIT: God how i envy you - hope you are having fun in india! where are you from? How do i add you to my messenger??About the damned atta - Yaar hum yahan Granada mall ke paas rehte hai on one of the compounds on way to the airport. emotionally blackmail kar ke husband ko ek din hara le gayi - and we couldnt understand anything. We just came back home completely baffled. where is this place you are talking about? I mean how do we reach there. Although you get good arabic bread here but bhai ghar ki roti ka maza hi kuch aur hai!!
Edit: aaahhh ok - my sister says i am completely dumb when it comes to chat stuff and she absolutely right. I dont have yahoo messenger. I have msn. Aur yaar tumhare sheher me aaye hai chai peene toh zaroor bulao yaar - you shud have imbibed the famous arab hospitality by now!! LOL Anyway you have fun in India when you come back do look me up - where can i mail you? Aur tumhe aisa lag raha hai ki i can open your profile, double click and add you, aisa asal me hai nahi. I have double clicked many times with no results.
@Mintee: stop - you are making me cry. I miss snow and trees a lot. You are right - you tend to take for granted and now when i go back to the Uk or US its like a sight for sore eyes almost!
@H: You are russian or german?? ah i have often wondered about your lopsided english. this explains so much. |

I miss gol gappay and fresh meethi lassi (sweet laban). Add some good nihari and oh yes, fresh tandoori naan :)
I grew up in Saudi and I used to miss shawerma LOTS... this time around, I could not find a shop that made it to my taste :( however! I cracked that puzzle.. I order a chicken shawerma with tahini and hot sauce (along with the regular garlic, turshi, salad & fries).. the shop here makes one with holee bread Yummy yum yum. they normally add tahini to meat one only but I can't stand the chunks of fat they add to the meat shawerma :( and oh yeah, fresh falafel!! I found the best are from Golden in al khobar!!
In riyadh in good old days.. they had this afghani bread.. was thicker, softer, and much better than the tamees they have near farm 5 :-/ we used to have the sesame afghani bread and sweet laban (lassi) for dinner sometimes :)
@mintee: snow in Texas.. I lived in WI for 3 yrs.. even upto 9 inches in one night.. -29 wind chills.. ugh.. then I lived in TX for 3 yrs.. total flip weather.. last year they had icy rain for 2 days and they had to shut down UT & I-35 :D Austin will be a mess if they had snow there.. 400 accidents happened in those 2-3 days of icy rain! |

I miss fresh "sour cabbage" called Sauerkraut.
I miss tomatoes having some taste.
I miss European food not cooked by Indians.
I miss dark bread.
I miss people knowing about driving etiquette.
I miss snow at Christmas.
I miss educated friendly sales persons.
But - I making the bed, I have to sleep in it. This doesn't bother me to much, because I got many other good things in return.
Ask what I do NOT miss about my home country and my list will be a bit longer:))
Take care.
@Tina, you made me smile. "Heidi" plays in the Alps in my country. Big, big difference compared to farm life in Texa:)) |

I'm an American living in Saudi Arabia, I don't mind this country at all but there are alot of small things that hit that spot and make me home sick from time to time. Like I miss the warmth of the people back home, here women are so cold and men are warm because they are just happy to have some female contact. I miss just sitting in a waiting room and sparking up a conversation with someone, here the ignore you if you arnt even there.
I miss candy, here it kinda sucks.
Hot cheetos, they are really scare here but when I see them I buy the whole shelf.
I miss my friends and family, I didnt think it would be this hard to be away from them since modern Technology has webcams and instand messenger but it doesnt make up for really being there with them, indulging in their presence.
I miss activities, there are alot of things to do here in KSA believe it or not but you just have to unearth them. Most of them are pretty expensive which kind of throws out the expatriate group because most expats are here to save, so make stuff cheaper so we can have something to do in our spare time.
Also, variety of alcohol. Ugh I'm getting sick of the same old vodka, homemade crap and whiskey. But then again I shouldnt be having it anyway huh! |

Not much. I'm a Brazilian in Saudi. Here the alcohol and cigarettes are cheaper since a lot of locals make there own beer and moonshine so it is pretty cheap since it is illegal so no taxes. Cigarettes have no taxes so I pay literally like 1 US dollar for a pack while in Brazil I was paying like 6 dollars. Plus everyone here smokes and most drink so it is easy getting a free cigarette and a cold beer.
Women here are real easy to meet too since they are usualy the ones slipping you there mobile number while in Brazil the men have to go to the women. Here you just keep it descrete, only problem is most of the women are married(but in bad marriages) so you can get in trouble if caught.
What I miss in Brazil is the nice and relaxed people. Saudis are so unhappy and treat people like garabage and have no clue how to drive. |
