Great food, great wine, Sunsets, amazing beaches, amazing wildlife, scenic. Rugby, cricket, vetkoeks.Sense of humour. Well behaved friendly people (generally).....smell of boerewors, mining, castle larger, chappies chewing gum, koeksusters, You magazines. All the wonderful accents, from different countries. The smell of rain, flying ants, glow worms, ant-lions. Jacaranda's, baobabs and sssooooo much more !!
Ps.......the few who just mentioned aids...probably have never visited our wonderful country !!

Wow! Some pretty negative folks in here tonight!

Here is my list:
Dr. Barnard and heart transplants
Nelson Mandella, his wonderful smile. He was and still is a great role model for all of mankind in my opinion.
Desmond Tutu
Ernie Els and Gary Player and the absolute best golf courses anywhere on this planet.
Miriam Makeba, Pata Pata and how I wish I could still dance to it. LOL
Diamonds - all the best ones come from South Africa.
Wilbur Smith - some of the best historical novels I have ever read.
Adventure - From the southern most tip to the northern most border, for any Canadian it has to be an adventure - it is so very different to what I grew up with. Wild animals, fabulous sunrises and sunsets, oceans (I hail from Central Canada which is a long way from any of the three oceans that lap against Canadian shores) Mountains that are very different to ours here in Canada, thatched roofed rondowals and Zulu beehive houses, the most beautiful birds and the ugliest all found in one country and etc etc etc
The Observatory at Sutherland - definitely a one of a kind
Huberta, the Trekking Hippo
Isidingo
Mopane worms - I ate some on a dare. Not bad actually.
Table Mountain and dassies.
Red earth - never saw so much red earth in my life as I saw in South Africa.
Geckos in my bedroom.
Aloe Ferox
http://www.wildearth.tv/home - one of the best S.A. Internet sites around

Edit: I do not associate corruption, drugs or any of those other negative things with South Africa simply because they are everywhere. It would be totally unfair and incorrect to associate them solely with South Africa. I do, however, associate TOTAL corruption with Zimbabwe and it's megalomaniac leader.

Sprinkly
Pros: Family, friends, home, good food, friendly people, stunning landscapes and wildlife, great sport teams.

Cons: Corrupt people in government, crime, poverty, Aids

I wish people would look past the negatives and give some positive answers - yes we do have problems but we have an awesome climates, mountains, the sea, game reserves, good food, excellent wine, biltong, braais, laidback lifestyles and many other awesome things you can associate SA with.

One of the highest standards of living if you are rich. It is virtually impossible to own and run a wine farm anywhere in Europe for the same amount of money. People live more in houses, not flats and have gardens.
I think of open spaces with wild nature, skies uninterrupted by buildings, really yellow sun, the heady aroma of fynbos (I am from Cape Town), the smell of the Atlantic ocean, fresh fish and chips, red earth, the stomp of hooves of wild antelope at night outside our tent, wine, mampoer, braaivleis.

I'm going to give you a couple views on this one-

Most people from where I grew up did not get much education on SA, so when I asked a couple of them, they're associations included:
Apartheid
Racism
Tribal people
Lots of crime
Lions, zebras, etc etc etc
Developing country

I usually associate it with:
Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town
11 official languages (That would be so cool to have)
Lots of unofficial languages
Countless accents
Mandela
Some of Ghadi's activities
Zuma
Mbeki
Only news that really ever gets here about SA is about soccer (football), Johannesburg's crime rates and how Rudy Giuliani is somehow going to do something to help....Why a New York Republican is getting involved, who knows? But he did do a lot with NY crime, so it might be good.
Elections are apparently coming up down there, there's a lot of talk about letting people abroad vote.
Lots of really awesome cultural things, I love the slang you guys use for different things down there. Words like "lekker" and "bakkie" and things like that are interesting to hear and learn about.

Among other things.

I associate my family and friends, Biltong and Droe worse. Crime, punishment and poverty. Table mountain, Durban harbour and Sandton city.

All places, and things I have seen and done.
