What do you do when you knock on someone's door and there's no answer?

Depends on the circumstances.
If is something urgent, and i know they are at home.......then I'll ring the bell or knock the door till they open it. (ya haram....may be they are deaf !!!)

On the contrary, if I have gone for something totally casual, I knock once and after a short time i leave. If it is related to work, then I'll come back .

If is something that is important for them, and they were the ones asking for it, then I knock, and if not reply from them, I leave a card with my name and phone asking them that if they are interested have to call me.... and wont do anything till they do it.

Two knocks are enough to find out if they are there or not. (not wanting to answer is another issue). But to knock couple of times, I would be convinced that either they are not there, or they don't want to answer. either way, I leave.

I make sure that I telephone folk first. I don't like to waste time knocking on anyone's door and find that they are NOT at home. I do this with business concerns as well. Peace!

I leave. It's kind of awkward, though, when you *know* they're at home! LOL I'm not sure what the point of your question is, however. Are you asking if we leave a note or walk in or what? I know we used to do that when I was little--leave a note (or walk in, depending on the person)--but no one had answering machines then and now with texting and such.
