South Africa is a beautiful country, which I love tremendously. It has great scenery, lots of culture, history and stunning nature. But one cannot ignore the problems SA faces.
Most people live in poverty, child mortality is sky high, crime (due to inequality and poverty, and education) is high, many children have a very bad start in life, women get raped, men get hijjacked, drugs like Meth / tik ...
These problems target the poor population the most. Yes, there might by burglaries in the rich areas, the situation in the townships is not comparable to that. So yes, to you and me SA might be a fabulous country, as we have to money to travel, to have a cocktail at that great bar and to relax on SA's most beautiful beaches. But for the millions and millions of poor people, SA is a constant struggle against poverty, Aids, violence, etc. Sad, but true.
Most visitors, while aware of these and other challnges, are not fully aware of the consequences to the local people. Most tourists find SA fabulous, simply because they have not seen the other side. My tip: visit a toownship for a change, and see what is going on over there. Because that is also SA. You will see a lot of "bad stuff" here, but you will also meet strong souls who are fighting for a better SA in their qwon way. |

Personally, I love my country. Its true that there are some bad stuff happening here, but so what.
I don't think that I will ever leave my country and go live some where else, unless my work will force me to do so. |

hi im a south african living in Greece. people look at me very strangely when i tell them im from sa.its true that other countries have negative thoughts about sa, but we ourselves are to blame.i always tell people that i come from the best country in the world and that its as dangerous or safe as any other country.
so come on expats encourage people to visit sa and see for themselves what a beautiful country you come from. |

I loved South Africa on my trip there. The people were friendly and charming. Most of the places we ate, we were served by native South Africans, and they were wonderful and so happy to help. Of course there are the problems with the poverty and crime that make people afraid to visit. I can hardly wait to come back. It is beautiful and an amazing place to see. |

It is pure ignorance and for some ignorance is bliss. But some of us South Africans that go abroad, don't always help things. We sometimes moan about the violence etc. and don't always bring up the good things about the country in conversations. Maybe we as South Africans abroad can start sprerading the good about our country for a start. Don't get me wrong, I am talking to you here and not about you :-) |

Hi, I am a Lebanese which visited south africa and I really liked it. But the only thing which scares people is the high # of AIDS/HIV with people living in south africa that is why people think its bad. But it is not bad at all and I love south africa. |

In most cases it's because of ignorance. There are many people who, after coming to SA change their attitude towards the country. But all countries are being ridiculed by people from other countries - despite it being the only superpower, America draws the loudest criticism. So, while as a South African I am not happy about unfair criticism of my country, I accept that people have the right to state their opinions. The best way of getting them tom come here is not by complaining about their attitude towards the country but by improving on our security, marketing of the country and starting to be serious competitors on all fronts.
To: Feinschme... Thanx for what you did when you were here. It people like you who make us do more to remain proudly South Africans. I am sorry that you met those "horrible" women. But rest assured that they are just a drop in the mass of white South African women. |

They only think what they are taught just like people think we are free here in the US, face in order to see the beauty in any place you have to have a mind of their own. So when you here the negative, just speak of the positive and the beauty it will win those negative thinkers over every time. |

Been there and seen it.
Lived in a black township for a week. Visited people dying of AIDS. And AIDS orphapns. How much time have you yourself spent in a black township? Most white South Afircans don't even seem to have visited such places, far less spent time there.
Also spent a week in Pretoria and surrounding area in "white" South Africa.
Wherever you go in the world you meet nice people and not-so-nice people.
In South Africa I met many hundreds of people. I met a great many wonderful people, both white and black. In my time there I met only four horrible people. What was interesting was that the horrible people were all
white
female
aged between 20 and 25.
I've travelled the world and of course met lots of horrible people but have never experienced a concentration of horrible people of that description. I don't know what to make of it.
And for the sake of the record I'm white and I don't have anything against females aged 20 - 25 in general terms! :-) |
