What do you think of Hamas new peace proposal?

Hamas will accept a Palestinian state on the 1967 Borders.
Hamas will recognize Israel right to exist if Israel recognizes the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.
Hamas will respect a Palestinian referendum out come on the final peace agreement with Israel even if they do not support it.
A Palestinian national government without both Hamas and Fatah participation.
This proposal was delivered to the Israeli government by President Carter this morning.
Additional Details
The world was asking Hamas to recognize Israel and here it is.

Don't think so. The smart jews are in the US living on easy street. Only dumb jews live in israel, so they'll probably say no, giving a lame and totaly insane exscuse. Anyway the interesting thing is that a respected American person and x-prez have delivered the goods. It's up to them jews now to decide now.

zion no more
Just shows that Hamas and Carter are serious about peace. lets see what the US and ersatz israel have to say. My bet is that they will deny peace no matter the cost.

its good that this was delivered by president Carter
that is in no way to rule out or under estimate the egyptian role but any thing is made on the region scale would find israeli walls in order to under mine it
so now president Carter came to the world with an issue
so now its the world ought to reply on carter
i agree with few of the answerers
its that israel wants all free
israel wants first hamas put down weapon
israel wants hamas to renounce the rights of resisting occupation
israel wants hamas to declare that negotiations are the only element to "start negotiations"
israel wants hamas to recognize the rights of israel to exist as a precondition
israel wants hamas out of hamas
all that is to be done before any sign of nigotiation
in exchange what israel is giving:
no targeting personalities will stop until complyness
no launching messiles would stop
no tanks shooting pple will stop
no prisoners freed
no check points lefted
no medicine is aloud
gaz supply is less than 50% of the needs
once negotiations start its the golden opportunity to start building settlements
so palestenians after few years of negotiations find them selves close to where they started and then another uprise
and another wall will keep more palestinians in ">>>>>>JAILS<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<"

Yes, but the question is now will Israel and the world accept Hamas as a legit gov that was voted in democratically? And does Israel really want peace to go back to the 67' borders? If all works out, then it's a wonderful thing. Inshallah a step towards peace. Cheers!

The Israelis are a bunch of animals and they won't make peace with any Palestinians, Hamas or not. All they want is the land and that's why they keep confiscating it and transfering civilians onto it.
These bastards couldn't care less what any Palestinian has to say about any of this.

Zahra B
it is so funny , they never do it, i mean both of them Israel and Hamas. they just speak and speak and.....

Moe Ablue-Xull
I could go ahead with the regular rant on here:

"[The other side] doesn't want peace... They are lying... blah blah blah"

But I just don't know what's gonna happen. nor am I aware of their intentions.
I think the proposal itself is fair enough; neither side will get a perfect offer so they better compromise.

Friend
They never once said they were recognizing "Israel" and I for one HIGHLY doubt the credibility of these statements.EDIT- It's now official, mashaal has gone on record as saying hamas will NOT recognize Israel.Carter has wasted his time.

Jimmy Carter is a "Hasbeen" for short a pea nut . If money determines political and public views-as Carter insists"Jewish money" does-then Carter's views on the Middle East must be deemed to have been influenced by the vast sums of Arab money he has received. "If he who pays the piper calls the tune", then Carter's off-key tunes have been called by his Saudi Arabian paymasters.

I wonder how many times, in how many different sections, this asker has posted the same question.

The impasse reached in Hamas-Egyptian truce talks, the failure of former US president Jimmy Carter’s mediation bids with Hamas and Syrian leaders, together with the presence in the region of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, all contribute to the scaling up of violence.

Teheran and Damascus believe that warfare - not only on the Gaza-Israel border, but also in Iraq and Lebanon – will work best for their interests at two important Middle East encounters this week at which Secretary Rice will be present.

And about the peanut king, after shuttling between Riyadh, Jerusalem, Damascus and Amman – and two long conversation with Hamas leaders in the Syrian capital - former U.S. president Jimmy Carter reported Monday, April 21 that the Palestinian terrorist group had turned down his proposal for a 30-day unilateral ceasefire.

So Hamas is not exactly interested in recognizing Israel.

Can a tiger change its stripes.

Just yesterday as a last effort they tried to kill a massive number of Israelis in two different places, had they succeeded would they be willing to talk peace.

Hamas’ leaders are not of a single mind. They include both fiery radicals who dismiss any suggestion of co-existence with Israel and moderates whose views differ little from those of Abbas, a Fatah leader who is considered a moderate. Senior officials signaled that Hamas is open to changing its policy in favor of a long-term peaceful accommodation with us, that it is willing to take concrete steps toward this goal, provided that Israel reciprocates; and that it would seriously consider moving even further given the right political circumstances.

just another of those HUDNA accords. You must be a fool to believe that nonsense and I hate it when people say that 'both' don't want peace. No, Israel was never wrong to begin with. Don't ever forget that Israel has always only DEFENDED itself. Hamas can only attack and lie. When is Israel going to get rid of these liars for once and for all?

Francesca
It is hard to believe .... Anyway, I guess if a Culture goes for proselitism ("...-ize" the world), there is no hope for stable peaceful relations. -?-

Not at all.

Syrian and Iranian intelligence officers were meeting secretly with Hamas leaders and promising them every support for stepped up rejectionist violence.

In particular, they backed Hamas up in its ultimatum to Egypt (and indirectly Israel) to open the border crossings and end the blockade on Hamas-ruled Gaza as the sine qua non for a lull in attacks on Israel and terms for Gilead Shalit’s release.

The impasse reached in Hamas-Egyptian truce talks, the failure of former US president Jimmy Carter’s mediation bids with Hamas and Syrian leaders, together with the presence in the region of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, all contribute to the scaling up of violence.

This does not concludes Hamas' demands.
Hamas won't give up the "right to return". This means Hamas demands Israel to allow 3 million Arabs (the ones that left Israel in 1948 _and_ their descendants) to Israel, and in 20 years, making Israel an Arab country as well.
--- Update ---
Hamas actually held a press conference and 'clarified' what it meant (confirming what I wrote earlier):
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/04/21/carter.hamas/index.html
Hamas only agrees on a Palestinian country in the borders of '67, but does not recognize Israel as it's neighbor (how absurd is that?).

ertr
their desire is ultimately to destroy Israel and no peace treaty will last

Mr. X
it's a start, i guess.

of course the 67 borders are just a starting point in negotiations. because of hamas's terrorism, those borders won't work, new ones will have to be negotiated.

and i don't see how the referendum is going to work when they say that all (not just west bank and gaza) palestinians worldwide must be allowed to vote. that's a logistical nightmare, and if they are waiting for that, i don't know how it will ever happen.

and then a different spokesperson said they *wouldn't* respect the results of the referendum:
"But Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri in Gaza said Hamas' readiness to put a peace deal to a referendum "does not mean that Hamas is going to accept the result of the referendum.""

and with fatah and hamas hating each other, kidnapping and torturing each other, basically in a civil war with each other, i don't know how the palestinians are going to be able to enter into a negotiated agreement with israel.

but i guess it's a start.

Apparently you do not even understand what you typed. Hamas will recognize Israel's right to exist IF Israel recognizes the Palestinian state ON the 1967 borders

That does not say Hamas now recognizes Israel's right to exist.

Carter's message was that Hamas agreed to "recognize" the right of Israel to exist IF Israel met conditions that cannot possibly be met!

Israel is not going to give up the Wall.

Hamas should recognize the right of Israel to exist as a nation BEFORE it can be negotiated with.

One cannot negotiate with an entity that has as a part of it's charter the elimination of the other.

This is not an offer of peace. This was Hamas asking Carter to be a mouthpiece for its demands.

When Hamas changes it's charter only then may it be considered anything more than a group dedicated to terrorism and the destruction of Israel.

One cannot negotiate with a person or group that does not even recognize your right to exist.
Hamas representatives told Carter that their recognition of Israel's right to exist was conditional.

Israel recognizes the right of the Palestinian Muslims to their own nation, but not at the expense of Israel's existence.

Shalom
