As a South African all I can say is that we have a marvelous country. We have it all deserts, mountains, oceans, incredible fauna and flora and a magnificent climate. Politics suck at times but then any politician that opens his mouth is lying anyway... that goes for the whole world. Crime.... just reading the bits and pieces that are mentioned here ... it is no different from the UK or the USA. We have a stable economy and we also have strikes, unemployment, racial tension and poverty. Can't have it all can you.? I will never leave for another country as there simply is no equivalent elsewhere.

it sounds scarey my dad goes there and his friend picks him up with a gun in her car

I went to South Africa on a choir and drama mission trip in 2004. I stayed in Pretoria and Johannesburg. They both were lovely! The people are all very friendly. The fact that the majority of the country speaks English helps a lot when traveling from place to place. I stayed in a safari park for a few days which was marvelous we saw ostrich and monkeys running through the camp. It was a great adventure! I would recommend every one to go and visit.

The natural beauty is Oh-My-Gosh stunning and the people are varied, friendly and helpful.

We do have crime and a government that makes corruption into an art form but every country in the world has its issues, these would be ours.

Go here for an in depth look into the country as a whole:

Well I think it's a grand place to tour. Lovely things to see, awesome beaches, mountains, wine country and nature in general. Like any place you travel to, be prudent about safety.

If you do travel to RSA, I know you'll want to come back again.

South Africa is the best! it is just a few things that make it a bit 'lopsided' for example: crime, to much attention and money on 2010, litter.

every country has its up and downs and south africa is no different!we do hav a high crime rate and a huge hiv/aids population but we also have beautiful beaches, stunning mountains, amazing wildlife, friendly people, modern cities, fantastic culture and in my opinion... our country is one of a kind and is a great place to visit!

A lovely country - a world in one country.

Plus:
Natural forests, rivers, two oceans, lots of mountain ranges, semi-desert, diverse people, eleven official languages, four Nobel peace laureates, Nelson Mandela, world's deepest gold mine, world's biggest diamond hole, Southern Hemisphere's biggest hospital, host of world cup 2010, Africa's biggest economy, contrasting climate, Kruger national park, largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere, only country in the world to have two Nobel peace recipients living in same street, one of the world's fastest growing tourist destinations, the only country in Africa who after two national elections was declared mature enough by UN - hence no observer missions are not posted for elections, Johannesburg - only major in the world away from the sea or without a river running through it, braai (dop en tjop).

Negatives:
Unacceptably high violent crime levels, HIV/AIDS prevalence, high unemployment rate

I love South Africa. I've been to Luanda, Lagos, Joberg and capetown. Everyone has always been courteous and full of life. I wouldn't live there permanently, but visiting is recommended.

I love it here. With all the problems in the country & all. Every country has it's own problems. You just have to decide what's acceptable for you & what not. Even if I land a job overseas, I will come back to retire here. This is my home & I am proud to be South African.

S Africa is a nation in its post colonial period with remnants of the empire still creating issues. The disparities in wealth are shameful, absurb and growing. It is a tragic failure so far.
The CBS video posted earlier shows what we all know...there is a difference between a proper home and a shack of sticks and posters. I am surprised open war has not been declared by the desperately poor yet.

For 8% of the country to continue to have a strangle hold on the rest of the nation is sad and disappointing. The pains of a fast change should be endured now to avoid a slow death for the 92% of the county suffering while the abusive minority plays a "wait and die" game. Unfortunately crime will increase until the vast majority shares land, jobs and an economic future in S Africa.
