As you didn't say only Israelis, i guess i can answer. For me as an Egyptian, Israel is just a country, maybe till now many are confused about it, but i don't know. I don't like politics so maybe it's half a country.

"Israel"

My mother said to me
there will never be peace there
My father said to me
America is the best country in the world
and then I left America for Israel

My friend said to me
I hate it here in the summer
the landscape looks harsh
everything stinks

My friendā€™s words confirmed for me
my feeling, gloating
I love Israel more than she

What does the hellish weather mean to me
What does the terror and wars mean to me
Nothing, nothing that can move me from my beloved

My friend said to me
I love the Land of Israel
My boyfriend said to me
I love the State of Israel

What does state or land mean to me
She is my beloved
She is my Israel
Just as mother cannot explain her love for her child
Just as man cannot explain his love for his woman
I cannot explain my love for Israel

Whether or not G-d exists
Whether or not G-d gave this land to us
We, the Jewish people do exist
and we can sing the Song of Songs
and our song is our love for Israel

Patriotism, nationalism are weak words
What does politics mean to me

I hear the religious and the secular disparage and denigrate one another
I hear the Ashkenazim and the Sephardim disparage and denigrate one another

The word Israel has two meanings --
The land, Israel -- eretz Israel
The people, Israel -- am Israel

I am a part of the people, Israel -- our homeland is Israel.

I am also an American citizen making my homeland also the USA.

If I were to become an Israeli citizen, I would then have dual citizenship.

My Jewish grandparents were murdered in the German WWII holocaust.

I could say a lot about the NEED of a secure Jewish homeland some where...why not the land stollen from our forefathers???

But even more important to me...

I have become a born again Christian, and I see Isreal's existance is part of the prophecies of His SOON return!!!

Isreal means, to me, that "the Prince of Peace" is coming again soon!!! All Glory to GOD!!!

the isrealites are God's people and He got them out of Egypt, and when He did want to take them to the promise land they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years because all they did was complain, they constantly look at the negative circumstances instead of where God wanted to take them. The trip should have only lasted days, but because of their complaing they kept going around the same mountain over and over.
