To take over and control all the land from the Nile to the Euphrates, which includes parts of, or even entire countries such as:

Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait.

@ Dirk: Maybe South Africa isn't next to any Muslim country, but there sure are a lot of South African Muslims, so they are not next to it, but inside it.

as to the current events in Gaza....
to look good in the eyes of the Israeli electorate, nothing looks better to the electorate than smiting a few towelheads
to set the ground rules for Obama's new administration... make Israel look as if they are the put upon, make Israel seem the victim, stir things in Gaza to keep the mutual hatred going, delay any peace solution, grab as much of the possible Palestinain state (makes that state less viable).

the fact that rockets have been fired at israel, as obnoxious as that is, for many nay months and Israel has done nothing suggests that the decision to attack on the 26th was deliberate and triggered by something else. the only things that have changed that I can see are..

Bush's adminstration is in its twilight, so Israel can attack without casuing embarrassment for Bush.

Obama's administration is in the wings, with Hilary Clinton as its Foreign Secretary, Clinton is suspect as she was peripherally involved in the Oslo accord. By stirrign the pot right now Iseal can force the Obama adminstration down a more favourable (pro Israeli) pathway. its still close to the election so the Jewish lobby can remind Obama of his promises. invading Gaza guarantees lots of 'poor Israel' coverage in the US domestic marketplace.

Israel is after peace and security. Israel wants to be left alone and no longer attacked. These are the same things that every country wants for their citizens. Israel is not seeking land right now. In fact, over the last several years, Israel has given land away in an effort for peace and security. Despite Israel's efforts to be left alone in peace, others in the world have not granted them that luxury.

Put you and your country in someone else's shoes. That's what I am doing. I want safety and security for my country and its population. Why should Israel be any different? It is a basic right for everyone on this planet, no matter who you are.

Safety for it's people. Israel didn't start this conflict, they just responded to it. Glad South Africa isn't next to any muslim countries.

They are after giving more back (than the 90% already) of the land captured during defensive wars to appease their warlike neighbors.

So far land for peace has failed.

The ability to sleep through the night without sirens going off and having to run to the safe room they had to build because of Hamas.
The ability to go through a day without sirens and having to stay near a fallout shelter because of Hamas.
Some Muslims may be moderate but Islam is not moderate.

For the rockets aimed at them to stop. That was all they asked for. It did not stop so they decided to stop it themselves. As you did not wish to have Hamas mentioned I presume that you only wanted a biased answer against ISRAEL.

the Gaza strip this is holy ground , jesus was said to have Been there or done something there not sure what but it was along time ago lol no but seriously they both believe that the Gaza strip belong them , Gaza strip being the bit of land that is between Palestine, and Israel
