it means elder literally, ussually refers to a respected wise person ussually a student of knowledge or religion

The descendants of Royal King's families and also in the feudal system big land/oil site owners could have also got that acronym nowadays. In Arabi I think it refers to as a supremo.

Sheikh, also rendered as Sheik, Cheikh, Shaikh, and other variants (Arabic: شيخ‎, shaykh; pl. شيوخ‎ shuyūkh), is a word or honorific term in the Arabic language that literally means "elder". It is commonly used to designate an elder of a tribe, a lord, a revered wise man, or an Islamic scholar. Although the title generally refers to a male person, there existed in history also a very small number of female sheikhs.

It also refers to a man over 40[1] or 50[2] years old generally or a Muslim who is a student of knowledge. Whilst even a new Muslim can be called a Sheikh if he is diligent in seeking the knowledge of Islam based upon the Quran and authentic Sunnah, he can be referred to as such to those he can teach. And usually a person is known as a Sheikh when they have completed their undergraduate university studies in Islamic studies and are trained in giving lectures.[3]

The word Sheikh is not to be confused with an Alim, pl. Ulema, (a learned person in Islam, a scholar)[4], Mawlawi, Mawlana, Muhaddith, Faqih, Qadi, Mufti, Hadhrat or Hafiz.

sheikh has three meanings in our language ,

1. its mostly used in UAE for royalty (the seven governorship families of the seven emirates ), and certain tribes chieftains and their sons only .
2. its also called to people whom studied religion (Islam).
3. its rarely used to for old people ( 80 years and above) .

the common thing between those three characteristics is perstige, respect , leadership .

leader of religious brotherhood, Islamic scholar, An elder or religious leader; a wise person, (SHAKE) Title given to all Kuredin noblemen whether they live in Kuredin or Castana, literally “old”: generally qualifies persons who have a degree in one branch or another of Islamic sciences, sheik: the leader of an Arab village or family, Sheikh, also rendered as Sheik, Cheikh, Shaikh, and other variants (Arabic: , shaykh; pl. و shuyūkh), is a word or honorific term in the Arabic language that literally means "elder". It is commonly used to designate an elder of a tribe, a lord, a revered wise man, or an Islamic scholar, Sheikh Mountain, Alternate spelling of sheik. Sheikh or sheik is an Arabic word, used before the birth of Islam, to designate elderly male members of a tribe as those deserving respect. It’s comparable to the term Elder in the English language, especially when an Elder’s title conveys not only a person of a certain age and maturity, but also someone who may make political decisions about a group of people in a specific venue. The sheikh in the past and in current times is not only respected, but may have the specific task of guiding and protecting a group of people, settling disputes, being a religious leader, and helping to administer the law. The sheikh’s wife is usually called the sheikah. Especially in Bedouin nomadic tribes, the sheikh is ruler of a tribe, and as such, administers the law, makes deals with other tribes, and works for the prosperity of his people. Despite an overt association with Islam, it’s a mistake to think all sheikhs are Muslims. It’s also a common mistake to view all Arabs as Islamic. There are Christian sheikhs, especially in places like Lebanon, who have some local authority to protect their people. They are somewhat comparable to the Middle Ages concept of the lord who protects and sees to the well being of his people (plenty of lords did not abuse the feudal system). A good sheikh listens to the people and successful fulfillment of his job means that the people are protected and prosperous. This system is hardly democratic, yet is usually much more fair than that which existed in feudal times. In modern times, sheikh may be more an honorary term. Elder, more prosperous members of a people may be looked up to as sheikhs. Their experience, wealth, and wisdom mean they are important members of a community, and should be consulted on matters of importance. People may seek out this type of sheikh for advice. Further, virtually all older men in a community may be considered sheikhs. Sometimes the sheikh is less of a leader of a community in the political sense but more a religious scholar. Elder Sufis who take orders are called sheikhs and are teachers and instructors. Leaders in the sciences may be honored by being called sheikhs. The Western world’s definition of sheikh limited this term to refer to Kuwait’s leaders. This is an oversight, and in actuality incorrect since it is in much greater use in the Arabic world. Kuwaiti leaders are not called sheikhs anymore, incidentally, but are now termed emirs.

This is an excerpt from Wikipedia. If you want to study the subject further, simply Wiki-search "sheikh."
"Sheikh, also rendered as Sheik, Cheikh, Shaikh, and other variants, is a word or honorific term in the Arabic language that literally means 'elder'. It is commonly used to designate an elder of a tribe, a lord, a revered wise man, or an Islamic scholar... The title is sometimes more informally used to people who have a certain financial or political influence, but especially in relation to royalty and other nobility. In the Persian Gulf States the title is used for men of stature, whether they are managers in high posts, wealthy business owners, or local rulers... AudioInklination
a sheikh is man who lives in the desert. there is only one true sheikh, that is why he has to hide most of his life, for there are MANY other man chasing him, constantly, trying to take his title. he is an arrogant man, who will not ride a typical desert dwelling creature like camels, but insists on riding a horse, who often die, only days after he has ridden them, and he rides them straight into the ground. He walks around, constantly looking over his shoulder, ready to counter-strike, and dodge a sheikh-seeking missle, should one be fired in his direction. He has a lair, but but it is hard to find, but if one does stumble upon it, it is often filled with Arabian Gold..and magic.
as soon as the sheikh is discovered by another man, his personal belongings inside the lair will instantly turn to dust, and his family name plate on the outside of his lair will change in a poof of magic, to the new Shiekh's name. When the new guy comes along, the old shiekh must get his head chopped off, by the other mans saber, and the other man will instantly inherit his sheikh powers much like the highlander movies, along with a shiekh looking turban (color of his choice), and either a robe, or a pretty sheikh looking suit to go with the turban. it is a heavy burden to wear, and position to fill, but they say it is worth it, just for the Arabian Gold alone..
